Can somebody make me understand the point of SOTC?!!

I’m sorry but I don’t get it all… some folks will post 4 threads dedicated to their collection?!! What’s the point of it? Yes I get it you got a lot of Casio’s and you love them?!! So just post it everyday at WRUW and it will be in your gallery!!

And No Story or at least funny threads about it?!! Is it the fishing for compliments?!! But I get it aren’t we all fishing for compliments to make our little hobby/addiction sane?!!

C’mon we gotta do better… I myself been trying to figure this SoTc madness is about and thinking of some creative way to approach it!! Hence I haven’t post much…

Ok rant over …

“Nobody cares about the watch you’re wearing”

Yep, including me.

Clearly, many people need validation from total strangers on the internet.

·

I don't mind a SOTC at the end or the start of the year. You see what the person owns and if they go into detail you can learn something.

·

A timely and hopefully effective rant. Thanks!

I guess so… I get that validation in way… but posting 4 threads about it seems excessive to me at least…it’s sad to me..

Oh, and while we’re at it, stop asking me to pick your watches for you.

Maybe try making your own decisions, you know, like a proper grown-up?

·

At least I tried to make mine interesting and only posted the highlights - mainly for my own benefit because it's constantly changing.

But yeah, agree - zero interest in seeing someone's collection of Casio's/clomage's so I just skip past 'em coz it's someone's pride and joy and probably being posted for similar reasons to myself.

Just please try and make 'em interesting rather than unexplained random pics

·

I guess many feel they need to take stock of what they have and validate their choices, and feel the end of the year/start of the year is an appropriate time to do so. I don’t get it either and just ignore all the SOTC posts.

·

When I wrote this my idea was to gently mock five watches. The whole SOTC thing took me out of my game before I could even get to five. It is just so ponderous.

"I have had this watch since I was 17, I am now 21."

"My grammy gave me this Invicta, she gave my brother a Tissot. I am glad that I wasn't a pall bearer, might have dropped the old bag."

"The first time that I ever timed anything with my chronograph was the first time that my girlfriend gave me a, you know. It took 2:11 exactly."

I may have to approach this form again.

·

Honestly, it’s rare but there are SOTC posts that can be interesting! In fact, I ended up buying a watch because someone posted a really great collection. If it’s a diverse collection and they say why it’s meaningful to them I don’t mind SOTC.

·

SOTC is certainly a better post than those that rant about other people's posts......... 😉

If they write something or story about it yes…

Yes!! I love stories and why ever changing dynamic of someone’s collection, the mind set and how you feel about the collection? Did you go overboard or why is it still not enough!! I like to learn more about our community in that sense as well more than what watches they have…

I feel the same, but I want to know the reason for validations … is it insecurities or their wife left them or something lol

Your quotes in this make it the post of the year so far in my book. Outstanding

I’m cynical and cautious so I see SOTC posts as advertisements for thieves.

Me too… but I wanted to understand so I can communicate better and I might be missing out on a good conversation and possible friend if I neglect it…

A SOTC post should definitely have a story or a hook like any good content. But not everyone is good at creating content.

Yeah!! I was hoping for some hook for the post but you’re right not everyone is the same … which is good too I guess…

Agree…basic SOTC posts with one or more pics of boxes filled with watches (often uncannily alike) with no further proper explanation fall in the same category as the 4.x to 5 star reviews of at best mediocre watches and AI generated reviews (where something always seamlessly blends with something else, and the words ‘timeless’, ‘classic’, and ‘exquisite’ feature more often than expected (i.e. more than zero). When confronted with them, i take the advice of my favourite writer, Gene Wolfe: “When I get shit in my eyes, I close them - fast”

Yes to hear old man complaints it does get tiring… it’s more like make me understand it?! Give me a perspective on why it is much better than my rant post… I’m ok with it I just want to learn why folks prefers it..

It has the advantage of being on topic. WC is predominantly a watch collectors app for discussion on watch collecting. There have been some state of collection posts I've found interesting and some I've skipped but it's completely relevant to watch collecting. Why are we here if not to discuss watches, our collection and why we collected certain watches?

Ok… I get that… I guess I should create more of a discussion when I see SoTC with nothing but photo bombs… hmmm you might triggered some brain cells for more engagement than being a passive member…🤝

Apart from that I was only pulling your leg. It's all just fun banter and your post is certainly getting comments so your contribution is more valid than most. 😁

Never one for leaving an open door un-kicked-in :-)

PS: i forgot to mention the 'picture of handful of straps' posts i now see pop up regularly...

Since joining Watch Crunch think that it is a platform for manufacturers of watch presentation boxes to sell their products. I like to reserve every extra dime for my watches! If I were to post a personal SOTC, it would make me sad realize all the other things that I can spend on instead of my adult toys that I enjoy but mostly enrich the folks who sell me the items.

Like $600 budget person? OMG, I have hovered over block SOOOO many times on that one.

SOTC is just people that want or like to share. I noticed some want to be a bit snobby with there collection and others has no shame and put it out there. I seen some No Comments!😹
