I bought Wimhurst Coulomb’s watch⚡️⚡️!

Coulomb’s Law and a Wimhurst generator is what I refer to of course.

Ok - sorry to leave my friends here hanging, spouting about a new I picked up at Wind up Watchfair … but then not being forthcoming about it right away.

It’s a super polarizing watch…so I highly doubt it’ll get love like my Ginza or Ryusendo. I’m quirky, and some of my watches follow the same path.

Without further ado, it’s this:

Clearing up some basics:

It’s made by Citizen, who spent 10s of millions developing the tech( one of their crazier ventures!) Looks weird, but it’s awesomeness in motion.

No battery, no spring. It has a Step motor, an electrostatic turbine motor, 2 electrostatic turbine generators, an ‘accumulator’ ..and a rotor! 🤯🧐🤔. Yup bonkers!

No set maintenance interval. A first copy of this movement has been running at citizen labs for 8 years and is still keeping perfect time. They believe it will continue happily for … decades? Yet to be determined? I plan to push my way in to Citizen when I’m in Japan next time and talk to the tech guys if I can 🙂. 0 to +5 seconds a month accuracy (I was told to expect greater than quoted accuracy!)

Image

Movement powered, bottom turbines spin, causing it to gain charge. Top larger turbine drives the second hand. Confusing? I’m only just getting started. 😃

Watch shuts off the second hand after 5 minutes of staying still. Drive turbine and second hand resume when you start moving again. PR sitting on a table not moving is 10 days. One more minor detail: never go 2 years without wearing or moving the watch- that can damage to movement 🤷‍♂🤪!

It’s big - but like my Seiko LX, it wears small for my small 15cm / 6” wrist.

Citizen / Accutron division makes about 200 per year and they sell for ~3500 . Not a money maker for them. Kudos for a new movement technology!

It looks interesting in photos, but is striking to see in motion. I’ll look for a vid that shows it (and makes it look good) and link it later.

I loved so many watches at the Windup fair .. but decided to pick up one that was unlike anything else I own. So much for no purchases 😂

I'm extremely curious to see what comes of this endeavor for them.

I expect it to be expanded in design and size in the next year or so ⚡️

Do you describe a watch or an airplane engine? 🤔🛩️

I’ve always been curious about these. But never really considered on account of its extreme quirky design. Very very cool though.

·

Alan you have a fantastic watch to set your mechanical watches too without the need of the phone ☎️ 📱 📞:)

·

Nicely done, Alan. I love it! 😍 Wish I had seen it in person at Windup.

·

This watch is on my list of watches to experience and maybe own. So excited for you. Congrats.

·

Just did some research - amazing tech! Nice addition to the collection for sure.

·

I have been eyeing these for sometime.

Thanks Ed! 🤝🍻

Kind words appreciated. I’d stress for this watch it’s important to track down and assess in person b4 committing. But, if you like things a bit different- it’s very cool! BTW - the rep said several new models coming out next year 👍

Thanks! On a larger scale these things make arcing electricity shoot all over the place. Only bummer is that my watch doesn’t do that 🫤

yes - crazy interesting technology

...and now I want one. 😀

lol - that’s my thought after almost every watch I read about

I did 2 full days - and somehow still missed Paulin and Studio Underdog (and others?). It was pretty amazing how much they crammed in 🤯

Yes - if you want to get dissuaded, go through the comments section of a review on this watch! It’s why I stressed ‘it’s polarizing

I think the calibre is large as well, so necessitates the big case. Definitely trying b4 buying is mandatory

Good idea! The 10 day PR will mean this one stays running continuously I think.

I’m excited to see how it does as a reference timer!

Agree. My favorites were Nivada Grenchen, Lorca, Sherpa, Bravur, Isotope and Paulin. Do you think we can lobby Worn & Wound to do Windup SF twice yearly? 😂

Well I didn't know what meme to click robot, hearts or fire (I clicked fire) this is an awesome watch, in fact God tier. The technology, the looks it's just ..yeah. It's one I've been admiring for a while, if only I'd stop buying the old hat technology in mechanicals I'd get one (no willpower😖). You sir are my May watch king🤴. What a watch🤩.

Rob! You kindly exaggerate- but I won’t argue and instead will just feel happy and say thank you!
