To homage or not to homage?

Hi gang,

I have long been a sucker for the pelagos 39 in blue. The itch for one is immense however I cannot justify the price tag.

I as a collector wear the crap out of my watches and beat on them a lot. I am also a huge believer in affordable pieces as my collection shows.

Its because of this that offerings like San Martins pelagos homage. Or even the erebus origin in blue that has inspiration from a pelagos are so tempting.

My question is do I get a homage/inspired piece that is more in keeping with my collection and beliefs as a collector. Or do I save for something that costs more than my whole collection?

I’d definitely recommend saving up for what you really want, I’ve tried homage watches and they just never seem to satisfy the itch so then I’m stuck trying to sell them on!

The answer is all about patience & time!

What I mean by that is, how long will it take to save the money needed to buy the Pelagos? It's the same process for everyone, the variance being how quickly you can save, your tolerance for being patient & how expensive the end watch is?

I'm not great at waiting, the savings journey has to be a short one for there to be any chance I'll hold out. For me it would be no longer than 1 year. I could cope with not buying anything else if at the end there's something special. Any longer & I'd be kidding myself.

Damn that’s a tough question. Just do what’s gonna make you happy. I want a BB54 so I’m gonna save up for that. I have an homage watch and I just ordered one but that BB54 I’ll just be patient and wait.

All I can say is there is no homage that ever satiated my need for the original.

And in a cruel way, no original has ever satiated my desire for more watches.

Something something buy what you like.

I'm all about getting the look for less, so homage on, brother.

I recently bought this Pagani Design and love it!

I don't think spending $4k for the original would enhance my enjoyment of this watch design. Instead, I'd probably be wishing later I had that cash for vacation funds, gifts for my family, etc.

But that's just me and I'm easily pleased. Get the homage and if you're not happy with it, just save up for the real deal and chalk it up to experience, you won't be out of a lot of money.

I think you do what you can. I happen to like some homage watches. I mean, take for instance the PD moonwatch homage. It’s better than the ceramic. Lol. It does rub off on your arm as well. Like what you like.

I would always say get the cheaper watch. My favourite watch ATM is a SM homage. I have 3 vintage Rolex's but my SM 6538 homage is still the watch that gives me the most pleasure. A watch on the wrist is worth two in the shop.

I think you answered your own question in the last paragraph...

My question is do I get a homage/inspired piece that is more in keeping with my collection and beliefs as a collector.

Don't buy expensive watches because people online tell you to, particularly if you already lean away from wanting expensive watches.

If you decided to go down the San Martin or Erebus route, remember that you're buying a style, not a Tudor replacement. Personally, if I was leaning that way, I'd take a shot at the Erebus. I think a true homage like the Origin is more interesting that a straight copy like San Martin does.

·

Do what YOU want - I found a homage wouldn't truly scratch that itch, & I've seen many fall into the trap of short term dopamine hit of buying more clomage's which leads to a vicious cycle & a sprawling miasma of timepieces that aren't easy to sell yet cost as much as that one high quality watch that'd satiated that need.

Been there, done that. Learned . Got my Grail, now I'm mostly a strap collector and I'm very happy. Still saving for another higher quality watch, but no hurry. I love my Grail more everyday.

"it's a marathon not a sprint" to quote someone cleverer than me . 👍🏻

Not sure what’s there to think about.

  • You’re a believer in affordable pieces.

  • You cannot justify the price

Go for the homage. Easy decision in my opinion

I'm generally not satisfied with homages; I tried two and ended up selling them both.

In this case, I have an unpopular opinion: the Erebus Origin looks better than the Pelagos. It has a more coherent design.

·

I vote you get what you're comfortable wearing. If you're going to wear the heck out of a Pelagos and appreciate it, buy it! If it's going to be a safe queen because you're afraid to wear it, pass.

·

I don't think there's a right answer. It depends on how much you want the expensive piece as to whether you can forego everything else.

·

Take a look at these too, I think this is a green dial but they do a blue dial too. If you don't already have a good dive watch then you could do far worse than the erebus

The affordable space has more than enough non-homage styles to indulge in and be happy with. Save and get the watch you want instead of the homage. I think you’ll be happier.
