Respectful time between watches

So here I am, not 48hrs since posting my last purchase, with another new watch. I'm not sure why, but I feel oddly shameful about it. I think subconsciously in my head there is a respectful amount of time to wait between watch purchases, with that time being proportional to the cost of the watch. To buy another watch too soon feels somewhat disrespectful to the previous watch and like I haven't given it the time or appreciation it deserves.

What say you watch fam?

Should we savour our time with each watch? Enjoy it in isolation for a while to really appreciate it? Or should we relish and embrace the decadence of multiple watches arriving in the post for our delectation, like a buffet of delights?

The watch in question today is a Mondia milgauss homage that I have been watching for a while and leapt on as soon as I bought my last watch so that I could catch it in the sale at 45% off.

I couldn't find any wrist shots of this one anywhere on the internet, so had to go on faith and take a punt. The watch itself is nicely made for the price (and 38mm! Woohoo!) though I would put the bracelet in the 'Kinder Egg' catagory and hence swapped it onto a NATO (if you get the film reference then you win all the cool points today).

This watch isn't worth the £320 RRP in my mind, but at £180 I'd say it's ok value and will fulfill its role as a place holder for this:

A 904L, COSC, 1000 gauss, tritium, 5000G shock resistant beast 💪

This is currently the next watch I'm saving up for over the next few months (when it's available) but reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

I had the exact same conversation with my mother not long ago. I told her that I was thinking of picking this up

50 quid, what's not to love? You know what she said? "But you only bought your other "one" (referring to vostok she couldn't remember the name) 3 weeks ago. And you bought a timex 2 weeks before that. And you bought your seiko a month before that. And you bought a G shock a month before that. And you bought a Lorus 2 weeks before that!" (You know, seeing this years buys laid out like that she may have a point).

So to recap, I have done the exact same thing as you, and I feel guilty about it. But the allure of "ooh shiny new toy!" outweighs the guilt. Side note, where did you get that Mondia (here we go again)?

·

There is nothing rational about this hobby so I wouldn’t worry about getting two watches so close together. There is (hopefully) enough time to enjoy both… plus you got two wrist should you hear the other crying out for you. 😂

I dig the Mondia and bet its one helluva a strap monster. Personally think it would look absolutely killer on a blue nato or sailcloth strap… make that orange seconds hand and minute markers pop even more. Great pick up 🤙

·

Beautiful piece first of all. Love it. Too close together? Nope don't worry about it. Enjoy it!

·

I cannot offer any opinion on this, I’ve only done 5 mins before I’m onto the next one.

·

I have bought 5 watches in the last two weeks. A Vostok Komandirskie, Casio Duro, Kamasu II, Seagull 1963 and a Zodiac Super Sea Wolf. 😳

As to feeling guilty about it, um maybe, but guilt is useless unless you do something about it. I’m not sure what exactly to do about it tho. 😆

·

@Deeperblue I love that Shining nato strap 😉👌

·

For the first time, in more than seven months I have nothing new (really old) being shipped to me.  Let's see if I get through the weekend.

·

I thought of that but what happens when you buy 2 watches the same day and another 2 watches 3 days after??? Yeah I feel guilty and had 2 pieces on delivery …yeah I have a sickness…

Got the Mondia from https://www.guruwatches.co.uk/

Who were great to deal with and super fast delivery.

I think my fear over buying too many watches too fast is "But where does it end...?" There will always be watches I want, and sadly I cannot buy them all. I need to limit myself somehow and the 'watch respect period' after a purchase helps me do that.

(Nice Vostok. Completely worth it 👌)

Ooo.... You are right about the blue NATO idea. I'll have to see what I have in 👍

I'm happy to double watch in the privacy of my own home 😆

Thank you for helping me justify my life choices. 😁🍻

I shall stop with my whining then and learn from a master 😆

Get in! Now that's PROPER watch collecting 😆 No messin'. Like the watch, buy the watch. Boom.

I think if I knew what I was doing with vintage watches I don't think I would ever stop. Vintage just feels like a whole other ball game though and that stops me going through with a lot of purchases. In the past I've been so close to pulling the trigger on a vintage mido...

....a Seiko Pogue, a strela, and more recently I'm watching this Fortis on ebay...

But I'm never convinced enough that I know what I'm doing to actually take the plunge.

Picked up two watches in January and haven't bought another. Likely won't grab another until the end of this year or Spring, 2023. This is the longest period of not buying a new watch in over a decade.

Is a really satisfying feeling at this point. Not that I don't constantly look at new watches, deals and shop. I just quit buying after selling off everything and starting over. Decided, for me, that the rush of having another new watch to wear was no longer more important than saving to buy the more expensive watches that I really long for.

Zen state watch collecting. Sounds blissful ❤️ I hope to join you in Nirvana one day.

its a real pretty watch that will hold its own in your watch box. do not feel guilty as we all want to do what did.

Thank you. ☺️ It is pretty and does look totally different to anything else I have. That was my justification. 👍

·

When you know, you know. No boundiries or limitations. Except for the watchbox. But you can always buy another one.

First i have to say that the watch with the the strap you put on it, is a great choice for summer.

Secondly, regarding purchasing watches try to set rules for yourself, they can help you remove guilt when buying watches.

For me my watch collecting rules are the following:

  1. If I can't afford 5x the price of the watch i want, i don't get it.
  2.  No more than a watch each 3 months.
  3.  I don't get watches on sales except if I wanted the watch before it had a sale on it and it doesn't violate rule 1 and 2.

For me these rules keep watch collecting interesting because it limits a lot of the watch options out there and it helps me avoid guilt.

I could definitely get on board with all of those rules.... Except 2 and 3 😆🤦

2 would be broken if I saw a watch on a "too good to be true" offer (I know these seem to happen a lot 😬) and rule 3 would be broken if a watch I previously discounted because of price is on one of these "too good to be too" offers. The FOMO is strong in me.

I think there is a really interesting conversation to be had about price and watch appeal though. Perhaps a topic for another post one day. 🤔

Congrats on the new pickup!

Ideally I like to space out my purchases, but if the right deal comes around it certainly makes sense to strike while the iron is hot.

Thank you. ❤️

The fact it is now sold out at the reduced price I feel vindicates my choice 🥳

fairs , tbh I am a big believer in just going for it , I was going to buy a green sub hulk a few years ago when they were like 5/6k grey market.

Lessons have been learned lol

The appeal of a watch and the price are definitely connected somehow.

Me and my mum fight about this topic all the time. For her, she looks at the price then she looks deeply at the item. For me it is different, I look at the item (most probably a watch) then I look at the price and to be honest this works really well for me, because watch appeal last much longer than price appeal.

·

I’ve done ‘doubles’ four times in my 30 year journey. I’ve been happy two times, once the second purchase was defective and I didn’t re-buy and once my second watch was a ‘what did I do?’ that I’ve kept, but never loved. So, I guess this is mostly true confessions from me as opposed to good advice!

I had that same experience with that same watch and hesitated as well I'm stingy and now I'm .... damn :(. Maybe that's why I have a secret (not so secret) distain for Rolex now lol.

This one of the reasons why I got into watch repair and service as a hobby. Figure if I get a lemon I maybe able to fix it myself. lol

·

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a “rebound watch” or an ‘observation time’ between purchases, but more power to you. Looks great. Don’t need a reason for a beautiful piece of jewelry.

·

I have never seen one of those. I like it. Nice piece for the price.

·

Deeperblue love the ball hate that other one mone…who cares. Should not have bought it.

This is the beauty of watch collecting. Different strokes for different folks 👍 for me it's a great watch that sparks joy. 🥰

yup… ”cheaper“ watches almost monthly if i see ones i desire

costly pieces only 2x annually
