Pipe Dreams of the Perfect Watch

The perfect watch is an illusion. Despite all of one’s sought-after features being mixed to together into a resulting timepiece…one little bit of design will teeter the jenga tower to a precarious level of incomplete satisfaction. And so revs up the cycle of looking for yet another watch to fill that seemingly-simple void.

Image

My Bertucci was perfect on paper: warm gold-tone aluminum case, white dial with black arabic numerals, rugged and beautiful hard wear, excellent legibilty, and the reliability of an all metal long-lasting quartz movement driving a solidly-built timepiece.

Image

All of that’s pretty much true. But there’s something that leaves me disappointed. There’s something that mostly leaves this watch in the drawer. Is the dial too white? Are the hands too thin? Should I have gone with another color? I just can’t figure it out. I love all those — by themselves I suppose?

I don’t know. I’m getting tired looking for that perfect watch.

Have you guys found your perfect watch? Or Is it just a pipe dream for you?

I'm looking for good enough.

I'm looking for good enough.

That’s a creed I wish I shared.

The perfect watch is subjective - this is perfect for me...

Image

Amazing construction and feel, deep etched caseback, solid bezel action, classic styling, capable tool performance, deadly accurate, incredible brand history, dressy enough for black-tie or casual enough for a hike...

Perfect...

You know, the Seamaster design is one that could tick all the boxes for many people.

For me "perfect" Is a very personal concept and changes from day to day. My little OP was perfect for the funeral I attended the other day. My San Martin was "perfect" today as I wanted a watch that makes me smile. I don't own a perfect watch for ever occasion. "Perfect" can exist in context IMO.

Variety is a spice of life.

Admittedly, every time I wear this one (it even goes with a fleece hoodie) I think to myself I really don’t need any other watch…

Image

But then I go work in the garden, cycle through the rain, go on holiday, just relaxing…and am glad I got a dozen others to choose from 😅

Well…that is a pretty special watch after all. You don’t see something like that everyday.

I'm finding the best way to get the Perfect Watch is to either modify or built. I think of the hands on your Bertucci where more, or even fully black, that would help, they disappear a little too much as is.

·

I can't afford my perfect watch, that's why I'm going to build it.

·

I've yet to find a watch which is a hundred percent.

Getting a watch that's ninety percent (of perfect) is relatively easy.

Each percentage Closer to perfection costs a geometrically larger amount of money.

A Forty dollar duro or a forty thousand Patek are both quality watches. What you want and see in a watch is very personal.

·

I have the perfect watch, a Longines Spirit 37mm.

And yet, just this morning I found a selection of Tudor watches in a London Jewelers. The Back Bay 39mm (not the diver), with a gray dial with gilt markers looked very sophisticated. My wife said, "you know one day you can just go in and buy it . . . ." So maybe not yet?

·

If the perfect watch existed we would all be wearing it…

·

No such thing as perfect unless you convince the Holy Trinity to sell watches at Aliexpress prices

·

The FP Journe Chronometre Bleu is the perfect watch to me, and I’m not even going to pretend I’ll ever own one

Have a look at these Habring2 Erwin Pilot

Wow! That is very smart!

Until they make a six digit 40mm Explorer II I've found the perfect watch is the five digit 40mm Explorer II. I wear it almost every day, sometimes I do wear it every day for months on end. My only complaint was the lack of on the fly microadjust, but with the addition of the Steel Reef easy-link now it truly does everything!

And look at it amongst all that machinery.

I buy watches that always bring a smile every time I strap them on.

Minor inconsequential deficiencies don't trouble me because I get my enjoyment, the quirks will not be seen by anyone else, and I will be the only owner of the watch until I give it away or run out of time.😂

Image

The only flaw that bothers me is the damage I caused on my first domed crystal watch. The Negroni Presage! There are scratches and dings from wearing the watch in close spaces. Stuff that the bezels usually absorb.😎I can't blame Hardlex. I can photograph around the flaws. So thats okay.

That’s the irony — domed crystals are the most attractive; but yet seemingly the most apt to receive damage.

My wee Borealis is near my perfect watch, but so are so many others.

Love the bezel!

I have 3 Bertucci watches and they sit in the drawer too. I think it has to do with the fixed lugs. I want to put something else other than a nato on it. I can't and it drives me nuts 🤪.

You know…I think that’s part of it.

Love the bezel!

It is very cool. Pics dont do it justice

I’m greatful for a lifetime of buying, building, and selling cars and motorcycles to learn the twice as expensive is not twice as good and perfect only exists in the next future purchase. 😁

Enjoy what you have and enjoy the search. There is nothing more 😉

Also, that watch is amazing!! Congrats 😘👌

·

Just because a watch is perfect does not mean that you can only have one. It is a tool. You cant repair a car with only one wrench. Most days the Tudor FXD I perfect but then I have to go and do some G-SHOCK shit.

·

There is no prefect watch for everyone, nor a watch that is perfect for one person all the time.

I could probably wear my Vaer Korean Field watch every day forever. It's a perfect everyday watch, but that well-roundedness makes it not so perfect for specialized applications.

What about when I need digital complications, or a watch to go with a really smart outfit, or a watch that I can whale on without beating it to bits? So I've also got a G Shock, a perfect beater, and a Marlin, my perfect dress watch. I could probably live with that 3 watch collection forever.

But some days, nothing will do but to wear a beloved F91w which is not only comfortable, but comforting to me. Other days, I really want a watch that loses track of time - that doesn't show me the time unless I ask. That's a job for the Armitron Griffy. So three watches become five. I could also live with those five forever. But I like variety, so I have different colored F91w's and Griffys and a different field watch style and a chrono and a diver for summer, and so on.

There's not a single perfect watch, but I'm happy collecting watches I love and that are each, in their own way perfect for me.

The perfect watch is the one that you have on your wrist, not in the safe.

This one is not in my wrist even in my safe. 🥴 It's close to perfection.

The fly in the ointment with your Bertucci is the polar white hour and minute hands. (The seconds hand is a good design.) They are just the wrong colour for the warmer white dial. Gold hands, yellow hands to match the hour markers or even orange hands would pull it all together better.

·

This is as close to perfect as it gets for me!

·

It is a striking #bertucci .

I view watches like people. They have their strengths and flaws. Scars and stories.

I really do enjoy its warm satin gold finish.
