I get it now - Rolex Daytona

Personally, I thought I was a Speedmaster guy. I love the history behind the watch and thought it had a better design. The first time I saw it in person it didn’t really pop out at me (the new white dial was the opposite though, that looked insane in person). Even then I still thought I liked it more than the Daytona, but the fact is that I had just never seen a Daytona in person.

I got to try it on at my local AD today and wow, I now get why this watch is so sought after. Incredibly stunning in every angle, fits so comfortably on the wrist, and the proportions were ideal for me.

I’ll probably still end up with a Speedmaster in my collection before I even make it on a legit Daytona waitlist but I’d still love to have it one day.

What are your thoughts on the Daytona or the Speedmaster vs. Daytona?

Have both, like both. Two different watches. In many ways, the Speedy is an absolutely boring watch to look at (dial wise) with a neat story. I have a small-mid size wrist so the Daytona proportions just fit, plus for an automatic chrono, it is remarkably thin. Cannot go wrong with either, but I would gladly give up my Speedy before the Daytona.

Daytona is by itself more prestigious, I prefer to wear it comparee to the speedmaster for everyday's routine

Hoping to own it one day, likely never will...and that's ok.

·

I've borrowed my friends black Daytona and no other chronograph will ever do

·

Neither one really pops for me. I've tried them on multiple times and I'm not interested in owning either one. I chose other models from both brands.

Which models do you prefer?

Like many here, I’ve been in the hunt for the white Daytona for years. Still got my hopes up. I own a Speedy and love it, but I wouldn’t put the two in the same category. Yes, they are both chronographs, but one of them is more playful while the other one is more refined. Get them both if you can! Cheers! 🍻

Which models do you prefer?

Globemaster AC is the Omega I preferred and bought. I prefer a number of other Rolex over the Daytona including the ones I bought. The only other one I'm interested in buying is the Ti Yachtmaster.

I have the latest speedy and I love the black Daytona. I have other Rolexes but as much as I love the black Daytona, there is no way I would pay ~$25k+++ for it.

·

I’d lean Daytona! It lacks the fat chunkiness of almost all other chronos. The regular speedy is too dull looking for me.

Minor Rolex Issues?

  • the whole Rolex hating average people (like me!). But you seem to get good customer service so maybe that’s not an issue?

  • screw down pushers? Chronos aren’t swimming watches and dive bezels time underwater.

  • Anytime I wanted to time something, I’d miss the chance when I first need to try to quickly unwind those pushers 😂!

If I was getting a chrono I’d lean toward one of the El Primero models. It’s the OG Daytona 😉

With the white speedy being out, I’ll take a white speedy and a black daytona, please!

·

Daytona all day everyday!

·

I used to see these all the time in London, now it seems like nobody has one anymore.

·

These are watches that are very different but give me the same good feeling.

I have a Daytona and I feel everything you said when I wear it. And I'm even in the teeny tiny wrist club.

I would still love to have the white dial speedy but I'm not in any rush now as having the Daytona has given me watch peace 😉

The Speedmaster, particularly in hesalite form, feels like a tool - it eschews glitz for functionality. Even the polishing on the case feels like Omega saying “look, we’re not savages!”. It’s a watch I find difficult to justify its cost to non-watch people.

The Daytona, on the other hand, looks - and broadcasts! - every penny of its cost. It’s glossy, sleek and refined.

Modern Rolex remind me of the gold-hilted rapiers of the 16th/17th Century. Sure, it’s a sword and it can kill you, but that’s not its primary purpose - it’s there to display just how much money and style you’ve got.

I’m a chronograph noob, the itch to buy one is a new feeling to me. Daytona is obviously an unobtainable, so regardless of it’s quality/value/beauty I’m not even looking that direction.

Yesterday I was in window shopping for a chronograph and here is my short list. I couldn’t find Breitling Premier B09, hence no mention

Zenith Chronomaster Original - doesn’t feel like 38mm, wears right (l2l is nice and compact 46mm) but looks bigger, more like 40mm. Also lugs hang pretty high over the wrist. Not sure if I’m to be honest. Still on my list, but I’m not 100% sold yet.

Zenith Chronomaster Revival A385 - super cool, I was really impressed and surprised how much I liked the watch. 37mm on paper only, wears more like 39mm with 47mm l2l. Very comfortable on the wrist. The only issue - no hacking second. Can live without it, but I’d rather have it. On my list.

Breitling Navitimer 41 - wears true to size, the dial is cluttered with text but somehow it stays legible. Date window finishing looks cheap. I like it but I think I prefer to admire it from the distance. Too expensive to buy when I don’t feel confident. Off the list.

Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph - 41mm, true to size, fairly long lugs (50mm) but somehow it looks smaller than Navitimer. Nice and clean, not my first pick but I will keep it on my list.

Omega Moonwatch - I’m an Omega fanboy, but I don’t connect with this watch. Nice proportions, bracelet on sapphire version is fantastic, winding feels amazing, but it somehow feels like a part of a corpo uniform. A lot to love but not for me. Off my list.

Omega 57 - I’m a big sucker for sandwich dials but this watch is not for me. I’d take Moonwatch over this one any day of the week. Strange, because looking at specs and pictures I thought this would be my favorite. Off the list.

On my previous trip to AD I’ve tried on Tag Heuer Glassbox. Perfect proportions, looks great but I have a personal issue with TAG, it feels to me like a fashion brand on steroids. I know it’s not true, I’m working on it 😂.

I’ve also looked at Longines BigEye and Tudors BB Chrono and FXD Chrono - not my cup of tea.

Glassbox, A386, A385, Breitling Top Time and possibly Premiere- here is what I’m left with. I’d love to add some other brands, but I have a strict rule not to buy anything I can’t try on first.

·

I’ve owned a Speedy Moonphase Moonwatch going on a decade now; as much as I love it (especially in comparison to the standard Speedy), it’s boring in comparison to and not in the Daytona’s class; I also think the moon landing marketing has been done to death. Both are great watches to own, but it’s the Daytona for me — it’s just a more refined offering in comparison.

My favorite chronograph is the Glashutte Original Seventies Chrono, then the Daytona.

·

I always get the feeling that one watch is for other people to look at you and the other is for you yourself to look at.

·

Daytona for me has a much better design.

Practical, but can be dressed up. I don't get that vibe so much with the Speedy.

·

Each to their own. I think it's too over polished.

·

A black dial daytona in steel is one of those hope to own one before I die watches. (For me personally) So cool!

·

I’m certainly in the minority but I just don’t really like the way the Daytona looks. I’d take most any other chronograph over it. Speedy gets my vote here. With that being said, I took a Carrera over both the Speedy and the Daytona.

·

I’m not a chronograph person but I don’t like the Daytona primarily because of the screw down pushers(absolutely not required and defeats the purpose of quick timing).

However I do appreciate how thin it is for a self winding chronograph but the design simply doesn’t appeal to me.

As for Speedmaster, the design appeals to me(especially the new white one and, ‘57 and the heritage with caliber 321) but I can’t get behind the measly 42 hour power reserve and 50m of water resistance given the price.

·

One is built to impress people, the other is built to perfectly time your deacceleration burn in order to re-enter the atmosphere at an angle so you wont disintegrate.

·

Speedmaster or Zenith Chronomaster over the Daytona, any day!

·

Speedmaster for me. The moonwatch has a rich history all of its own. But that’s just a small part of the speedmaster collection. If you want a smaller auto they have you covered. Moon phase check

New vintage 57 check

Titanium check

Ceramic check

You can even get one that keeps Mars time

Manual wind or auto and best of all no screw down pushers so you can actually use the chrono when ever you need it. In my eyes the moonwatch looks like a tool and you wear it because of its function even though both are essentially jewelry to most

And you can get them with snoopy on the dial 😊
