Being a good boy

I always liked the BB58 (I’m sure a lot of people are in the same boat). The reasons why I never really got one were:

  1. Something else always jumped the queue in front of it.
  2. Up until recently they were quite hard to get hold of (black/gilt on a bracelet).
  3. I already have 14060M Sub (similar size).

Walking around town I popped into a Tudor boutique and asked if they had the BB58 or Pelagos 39. Despite having more vintage tastes, I really liked the Pelagos much more. Even though it’s so much more similar to my Sub. The crown guards, glossier dial,  taperering bracelet, size/weight, colour. The BB58 has a reputation for being a slimmed down version of the regular BBs but holding that and the Pelagos makes feel incredibly ‘chunky’. If anyone is deciding between the two, it’s worth comparing them both in person. I liked the Pelagos 39 on my wrist better.

On a side note, Pelagos 39 was not on display. The sales assistant said they were holding them back unless someone specifically asked to see one. I enquired about the wait time and was told ‘around a month or so’. We had a nice chat and I carried on looking around the boutique - just before I left, the sales assistant caught me up and said that, that particular Pelagos had been declined by a client and was free for general sale….before you ask, go back to reason no. 1…😉

Edit: I didn’t get it!

I love the BB58. This watch is in my near future on 65th bday (3yrs) 🙁.

Teddy Baldassarre just did a comparison review on both models. Love Tudors and I will have her on the wrist soon.......lol

·

Congrats! Isn’t it amazing how opportunities turns up on watch safaris👍

·

If I were starting from a position of no Tudors, I can totally see getting the Pelagos 39 over the BB58.

It’s a fantastic watch - I’m splitting hairs!

Good luck - hope it finds it’s way to you soon!

It did require willpower not to pull the trigger! I’m saving up for the AnOrdain and nothing’s going to stop me now!

Aah, you tricked me. I thought by going back to #1 the Pelagos came between you and the BB58. Great willpower then.

Congrats!! Enjoy and wear it well!!

Only thing better than the BB58 or the Pelagos 39… is a BB58 AND a Pelagos 39 😂

Definitely plan to check out the 39 next time I head into the AD if they have one on hand!

I hear that 🤝

I think it’ll a little time to get used to the weight of the P39 - it does feel odd given it’s looks and specs

·

Righton!! Looks great

·

I think you need to clarify that you didn’t get it.  Post reads like: since it was suddenly available, you bought it!
Anyway - glad to hear you’re staying focused on the Anordaine.  I think my Kurono is maybe too similar in style for me to get one, but would still love to see one IRL.

·

The pelagos does look great on you... But Anordain is another level entirely. Stay strong! 💪

If you're the type to be picky about the thickness I'd say go for the Pelagos 39. If not, go for whatever you fancy. If you're blessed by the horological gods like @JaeBust or @Jt0909 buy both and double wrist the babies to us! 😛

Thanks for sharing the story and the pics. The dial of the Pelly 39 looks much better on your wrist than I had appreciated from stock photos. The sunburst of the dial and the brushing of the bezel insert give it a much fresher aestheric than I realised.

I think this goes for the 14060 or the maxi-cased 114060. Unless you have one of these as your sub I think they could peacefully coexist in our collection.

What ddi you think of the titanium finishing?

Their sales tactics on full display, I see. "Oh no, you can't have this, it's for someone else... you'll need to wait a month..." (counts a few minutes till you're vulnerable and thinking how rare and hard to get this stuff is), "Oh hey, this has just become free, do you want first bite at it?"

Haha - whatever happened to selling just something, right?

The sales wasn’t wasn’t rude or snooty and we had a nice chat and drinks so I’m not going to complain about her or the boutique

It's a bit of a lost art when, especially when it comes to 'chain' stores - whether we're talking guys at the local Games Workshop store trying to sell $50 worth of plastic figures, or whether it's a $10,000 watch at an AD. They all get dragged to off-site sales training sessions, and have further training drilled into them by managers and such until the whole 'experience' in a lot of really diverse stores is so off-putting, I don't even want to go into them. Some people eat it up, of course, and that just validates it for the stores in question. But I hate it, myself. I make fun of it and poke holes in it whenever I can. Not my scene! Arrgghh!

The 14060 is my grail. But because it was financially unattainable I looked elsewhere. Spotted a BB58 Baselworld ad in 2018 and fell in love. Ah Baselworld, what's there not to like about it back then!  Two months later the AD had a few stock of the original BB58 and it's been one of my favourite.

You got your number 3 right. You'd be having another no date and nothing is better then a Submariner at that point, as much as I love to recommend the BB58.

The Pelagos 39 shares similarities with the Submariner and you were definitely right not to get it.

I had tried on the BB58 before and I did happen to be wearing my Sub - it definitely feels a thicker or heavier than the Sub. Man, you were lucky - I didn’t spot a BB58 after Baselworld until a good months later! It’s the best looking Tudor watch in their current catalogue imo. That’s not to say I don’t find some of the others ‘good looking’.
I put the AnOrdain off for too long and it’s something that really appeals to me, hence the concerted saving effort. It’s nice/fun to go into boutiques to try things on and compare them but at the end of the day I want watches I’m going to wear (and rotate). I thought it may be useful to offer some thoughts if anyone was weighing up these two particular Tudors

I really liked the sunburst on the P39 (maybe after seeing the matt dial of the BB58 quite a lot). It’s not as inky black as the Sub (or the BB36 in black) - depends on what you like I suppose.

Titanium finishing was good. It’s just getting used to the weight really. My mind just needs to get over the weight issue really! The colour wasn’t too ’dull’ and just resembled a well brushed steel finish.

Too funny, I actually sold me 14060M, once I got my P39. Yes to me they are very similar. You should have bought the P39. Just saying.

Ah nice. Didn’t fancy keeping both?

I won’t sell my Sub (if I can help it). It was part of a pair handed to my brother and I by our parents

I feel that Tudors are just as good, if not better, than Rolex's—without the arrogance of Rolex. My opinion.

A watchmaker once said, "Rolexes are nice $1k watches", this sums it up—Rolexes are way over prices. Again My opinion.

Funny you should say that: I always think their popular models are underpriced. A sub for example costs x but if you want one (not from an AD) but from the market it’ll cost more - hence Rolex underpricing their product. Obviously there is some manipulation of the market going on here but on the whole it is driven by what the general public is willing to pay

Beautiful my friend enjoy it !!!!👍💪

I really like both watches.  They are actually pretty different when you have them side by side.  I would say that the BB58 feels and looks a bit more refined than the P39.  As much hate at the rivets get on the BB58 it actually rounds the sides of the bracelet and make it a tad more comfortable.  But the P39 just looks awesome and the T-fit clasp is a welcome upgrade.  The weight is light but not too light it feels like a toy.  The P39 does seem a bit chunkier when looking down at it.  It just feels taller then the 58.  Both are great and you can't go wrong with either one or two or three...

And oh I never claimed to have any will power so yeah...

Nice collection! The rivets on the BB58 have never really bothered me but what you say about the comfort does make sense. Just a note on the P39 clasp - with the addition of the diver’s extension to the T-Fit; is it ‘too’ long iyo? I never did it up when I tried it on!
I also like the bracelet taper on P39 - adds to touch of elegance to the design imo.

The T-Fit clasp is long not gonna lie.  It is almost as long as the lug to lug of the watch head.  I could see it being too long if you have say a 6.5 inch or smaller wrist.  I have a 6.75 inch wrist and its not an issue for me.  But if my wrist was really any smaller i could see it being a problem.  I would have liked them to forgo the diver extension to shorten the clasp, but you can't have everything i guess.  Just get it sized so the clasp in centered on the bottom of your wrist and its a non issue.  My BB58 black was my most wron watch last year, followed by my BB58 blue.  So lets see how the P39 fars this year againt them.

·

I was very excited for the BB58 and the P39. But when I was offered them, I turned both down. Not because I didn’t like them but they were just not enough to get me to bite.
The one that did however, was the BBPro. I’m starting to love this watch. its a different look completely to the P/Sub so it’s worth checking out.
Be warned there are availability issues at play.

Enjoy! its an amazing watch!
