Whats the most versatile watch?

I know there’s no “one watch collection” but there are many watches that are super versatile. A versatile watch would need to be able to do the following…

  1. Get wet

  2. Travel with it

  3. GADA style

  4. Dress it up

  5. Dress it down

  6. Keep accurate time

  7. Get it dirty

  8. Wear with jeans and a T-shirt

What’s your pick for the most versatile watch?

Of the three you have, Rolex. However, other brands have models to fit the bill.

·

I've always thought any of the OPs tick a lot of boxes for versatility!

·

Rolex DJ smooth bezel with Jubilee bracelet is the most versatile watch in my opinion. Jubilee bracelet adds to visual interest and ups the formality a bit while the smooth bezel keeps it firmly casual

Totally agree with you. Here's mine...

Datejust or OP, always looks class and never out of place, no matter what you wear or where you are

For starters: None of the watches pictured!

Moon watch dies with water, JLC is for investment banker power lunches (not much else) and Rolex fluted bezel will get your arm chopped off in many cities, and you wouldn’t wear a $10,000+ watch for gardening / playing on the beach / scrambling in Rockies / camping, etc.

Being a Seiko geek, I’ll suggest something like an Alpinist 😃. Looks gorgeous- and ~ 850 bucks, so I wear it any wear and everywhere.

Every situation you’ve listed, and many more 200m WR as well!

I think my Longines Hydroconquest covers all that. As does my Tudor BB58.

My vintage Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Spider.

Okay, it's vintage, so it's not the best when it comes to waterproofness, but I reckon it'll be able to survive most things short of a swimming pool if it was given a new set of gaskets. Time eats away at anything, and this watch is no exception. It's no spring chicken, but I bet it'll hold its own, even after sixty odd years.

For travelling, there's a crown to adjust the time. Independently adjustable hour hands and GMT complications are overrated unless you're a business executive that takes a 747 to the office every day.

This watch looks somewhat like a dress watch, but doesn't lose and of its tool-y appeal. You can wear this with a sport coat or suit, but also a pair of loose cargo shorts.

It's accurate enough. It could do better if I had a timegrapher to adjust it with. After servicing it myself, it runs more accurately than my Seiko 5 that I bought new. It only shows measurable deviance after about a week. Setting it accurately is a pain thought due to the dial configuration.

An acrylic crystal is perfect for getting dirty and rough. Trust me, a nasty scratch or gouge is better than pieces of shattered glass making their way into the movement. The case is all stainless steel and has likely never been polished.

It does lack on a few fronts, but as someone who prefers dress watches overall, this is perfect for me. It has serious heritage and capabilities, even if it's no longer as fresh as it once was. If it's good enough for Admiral Richard Byrd, it's good enough for me.

Totally agree with you. Here's mine...

Great watch! Will get one at the AD someday when my watch fund is flush again

·

For me, its another vote for an Omega Aqua Terra. That line is my choice for your criteria. Of three shown, none, as the two have blingy bezels that drip say "too much" and that Patek is too formal a brand or me again IMHO. My one watch would be an Omega and mine has sentimental value as my wife gave it to me(bonus).🥰

Gs 9f, gishi, sbgx343

200mm water resistant, Screw down crown, looks awesome on a leather strap, magnetic resistance to 40,000a/m

I have worn it to weddings, I have hiked up a volcano with it, scuba dived in the Pacific, worn it while mountain biking in madeira

My perfect GADA

I know it's an obvious choice but I have to throw my 224270 into this discussion.

Is that the new Calatrava? Show us the side of the case? It's so much better than the older model.

The Speedy has a robust 50m WR, but I don’t wear mine IN THE WATER. I would want something with 100 m WR.

Dive watches are great, but you are limited on dressing up (my wardrobe isn’t impacted).

The Rolex OP and Explorer are the model GADA watches.

I like the Aqua Terra a lot for this in a similar price range, and for a GADA, I wouldn’t go over the Rolex price point.

Cartier Santos doesn’t work at the gym.

Longines Spirit is fantastic as is the Sinn 836 and the Ball Engineer III Marvelight at the next tier lower.

Going down in price, Hamilton Khaki is too sporty and Tissot Gentleman is too dressy.

The new Citizen Tsuyosa are nearly ideal under $500, but only 50 m WR.

·

Of the 3, only the OP checks all the boxes. The Patek is splash resistant and I don’t think I’d want to get it dirty. The Speedmaster, too sporty.

I’ve always thought the OP (sans the president, the day wheel makes it a bit more corporate dressy) as the most versatile watch. I think the Aqua Terra with the teak dial is a close second.

Until I get one of those, it’s my GMT Master 2 16710, with quick adjust strap. Better for travel and dressing down, not as good dressing up as the OP.

The Omega Speedmaster is the most versatile of the bunch imo. Great with casual and formal wear. 50m WR good enough for activities outside of swimming and diving.

·

I think you forgot the most important one from your list which should have been #1 in order of priority

1. Means the most to your heart

then all the other points are accommodated because of #1.

·

any Rolex

Speedy just has that more interesting dial for me. I personally love the Chrono look #omega
