I actually wanted one: Tag Heuer x Kith - Formula 1

While I agree with most of the negative commentary that’s been circulating around the Tag Heuer x Kith collaboration, it didn’t stop me from wanting one of the stainless steel F1s. I found out about this model from TH’s history earlier this year, and immediately liked it. Finding out that they would be making more had me quite excited.

At the end of last week, I called up the only TH boutique that I could get to based on availability stated on TH’s website. I was hoping to express interest and see if they would reserve one to see in-person. I was actually surprised to be told that their anticipated stock had all sold out already, with payments submitted as well. That was a miss.

Kith’s “raffle” to buy one ended this morning, and I sadly wasn’t blessed with the honor of overpaying for the watch. And yes, these are egregiously overpriced. Especially the non-steel editions. But that’s how it goes with these kinds of releases.

Of course there are many immediately available for purchase at a massive markup on the secondary market. Congrats to all the people who shamelessly purchased them solely to flip (nothing new there). I would’ve liked to be one of the buyers who actually wanted the watch… but that’s how it goes with these kinds of releases.

I’m not optimistic that TH is going to reissue the watch separately, at least not any time soon, but I’m open to being surprised. Overall though, I’m a tad bitter about the whole thing, but that’s how it goes with these kinds of releases.

For the sake of honesty though, I have to admit: I probably wouldn’t be making this post if I had managed to get one. But if they had been accessibly produced and priced, most of us wouldn’t be complaining in the first place.

I was in the streetwear and skate industry most of my life. So I was ready to hear all of the issues with this release…. I’m not a fan of how those industries have become the Catapult to drive hype. Even all those swatch speedmasters were eaten up by the same people (literally kids) who have lost thier way. Nothing is for personal enjoyment it’s either for profit or to flex… the biggest reason why I left that industry to begin with. Buy vintage and be happy your not a 50 year old in a supreme hat and Travis Scott Jordan’s.

I love the new release with all of their colorful designs but they are too small for me but yesterday at windup I tried on this Vero which kinda gave me the same vibes

I think prices have gone up and availability isn't as good. I have been after one since January and never pulled the trigger. A lot of the good ones in my eBay wish list have now gone. Scalpers will be after the og's next.

Yup, Vero makes solid quality watches! I tried on their Smokey Bear watch and it felt great 👍

I'm torn between the forest editions that use kinetic which is awesome but kinda small for my taste at 40mm and the limited worn and wound edition that is 44mm but uses regular quartz movements. On the plus side they will change your battery for the next 10 years!

Your opening lines about knowing and acknowledging all the issues but still wanting one is THE definition of luxury.

I’ve got this generation of F1 chronograph. I paid about 600 for it. Great care of it serviced it regularly and it’s worth close to probably what I’ve got in it now because I’ve taken great care of it which would be about 800 to 1000.. if you can find an Original good one, I think you’re better off going with that!

I agree, and I don’t think they’re gonna hold their value long-term I just don’t see it.

Nope, they are a bit niche, I have no interest in whatever a Kith is 😉

A “Kith” is what Mike Tyson gives his wife before he goes to sleep.

The target market is people that couldn’t afford the originals way back when. Fact of the matter is back then it was a lot of money. Adjusted for inflation these are probably more than the originals went for, or at least on par with it. I just don’t believe they’re gonna have the long-term gas to maintain their value of the way in the original will. A Tag re-issue might have a little more staying power, but these are not. I just don’t see these, holding their value long-term the way an original wil.

Or people like me who weren't even aware that the watches existed back then, but think they look cool/fun. Also there are a ton of people like me who won't touch vintage because it's a minefield.

Not everybody considers "value", or value retention when they buy watches. Some people just think; "That's cool, and I can afford it", or "That looks like a fun watch."

Value retention is an issue with any long term serious collector I believe. That is if been doing it for any length of time. Unless you just have money to burn, then it’s anything goes. But even then I have friends with stacks like that and even, For the most part, they won’t just throw it away. I wish I knew now what I know 20 years ago.

🤷I like the watch

I liked the look, and wasn't even put off by the price, but being a LE I knew I'd never get one.

The people upset about the Kith Heur watches are the same ones that were upset by the MoonSwatches... People who were never the target market.

I think the comparison between the limited edition F1s is fair, but surface-level. The most apt comparison is specifically between moonswatch and the rubber-strap F1 models, but it really loses ground with the steel models. They’re both overpriced, yes, but they’re pretty different releases otherwise.

But what about people who just actually want the watch? Yes, they’re expensive, too expensive. But I wanted one and was willing to pay for it. I hate that they were limited edition, I hate that they immediately turned into “hype” watches, but I still like and want one. If they weren’t limited, the price would be even more absurd, but limited editions always have a markup. I would’ve pretty gladly paid 600-800 for a non-limited steel model.

I want the watch, I’m not primarily concerned with the value-retention.

It's a relief to be told I'm not a "serious" watch collector.
