Disappointed to the max

First things first: I love this watch!

But here‘s a thing:

I noticed mid of last week it had stopped working even though i was wearing it a week straight after buying it at the AD. I thought „Ok, Desk-Tiger, not much moving, might have not worked the rotor enough“… so i turned the crown for a minute and gave it a try. It worked and kept going. Yesterday evening i put it back in its box. This morning I put it back to my wrist and went for groceries. Back home i noticed: it showed the wrong time again but was moving. Weird. I set it again (it was 11:20am when i set the time) and wound the crown again and wore it for an hour. I put it back in the box and went to sports…. It is 15.15pm as I am typing this text… look at the watch‘s time…

Can it already be broken after two weeks of babying it like a raw egg?… I must say, so far the watch only impresses me with its design, not though wirh its beautiful heart that’s hidden beneath the dial…

And just for reference: it is not my first watch with automatic movement ;)

Stuff happens and you were unlucky.

Go back to the AD and have them sort it out.

·

Definitely go back to the AD. Might just be a duff one. Happened with my Rolex OP too and there was a problem with the movement. Nothing that a service won’t solve I’m sure.

Its my first more dressy automatic and i had concerns about it being too fragile, so this incident triggers the „I should have chosen differently“ -feeling massively 🙈

·

The nature of mass produced goods means a dodgy one slips through occasionally.

Take it back . 👍🏻

·

What everybody else said. I am sure Cartier will stand behind it's product. Nice watch by the way.

·

I had a Cartier serviced a while back. While it took some time, I haven't had any issues since.

Honestly it will be fine once the problem gets sorted out. 🥰🥰

You’ve probably been babying a rotten raw egg!?…😱😂😂😂

So sorry to hear this. That’s why we buy from AD and have warranty

So sorry to hear this. That’s why we buy from AD and have warranty

I am happy I did so and have an eight year warranty 😅

·

I have a vintage Santos. It’s probably 25 years old (that’s not vintage to me but younger folks think it’s vintage).

That said, it works perfectly. Once you get this sorted out, the santos will be a rock for you (one that gets scratched up mind you, but each scratche is worth it)

It happened to me too with a different watch. The dealer swapped it for a new one on the spot and sent the wonky one back. They’re delicate in spots and a spec of dust could cause problems.

·

It happens. I had it happen with my GADA, take it back to the AD. They will sort it out in no time, apologize and give you some free merch.

·

Things happen. I know it's disappointing, but it isn't unheard of. This is the moment that Brand either really impressed or really depresses.

·

Just a bad luck, but will be resolved easily at the AD.

·

The warranty should cover it

·

Damn, that stinks. It really is inexcusable for such a high end watch. I would bring it back and have them replace it. I bought the lowest end automatic watches and that never happened.

·

Not uncommon as everyone else said. Worked at an AD. Happens more often than you think. I know you just want to wear it and not be without after just buying it. However, the AD will take care of it. Go back ASAP.

Don't know how related this is, but this brings to mind a couple of incidents. First, I got a Nomos (hand-wound). One day, it was hours behind, but seemed to be running just fine. This happened a couple of times, and then I caught it stopped. Gave it a jiggle, and it started again. Something was gumming up the works and making it stop sporadically. Someone suggested that the hands were coming into contact and getting in each other's way. I don't know, but I sent it in for warranty repair, which took months. Now it works fine.

I just got another watch, the Atelier Wen. A few nights ago, I was playing with it, and set it. I looked at it some time later, and it had stopped. Gave it a jiggle, and it started again. Did it run down, does the rotor not work properly? It backhacks very easily. Did I jam it up somehow? I really hope it was a one off. It has a five year warranty, but it comes from China, so I don't know what it would take to send it in for warranty repair.

·

Hope you get it sorted out. Maybe you can “nudge nudge wink wink” some freebies out of the AD for your trouble. 😅

Hey! I think I have an answer cause I have gone through a similar problem and have managed to get a solution.. My Omega Aqua Terra which I bought from an AD was giving a similar problem .. I was winding it but if I was not wearing it it would stop after sometime .. then I also realised that probably the winding was not happening effectively it might be slipping .. so as I was going to collect my wife’s Tissot from the Swatch service center, I showed them my Aqua Terra.. they asked me to submit the same and said nothing major.. it took them a month to return me the watch .. in between I came to know that it travelled another city for getting the fault corrected… it’s working quite well as of now … so guess it’s ok…

So long story short - don’t feel bad give it to the service center (it’s anyways under warranty so you won’t bleed) and they will fix it for you .. 👍

·

It’s not on you. The Cartier in house movements are notoriously known for having a terrible self winding mechanism

·

I say go to the AD and start throwing stuff around like those maniacs you see on Youtube going insane at Burger Kings and Dunkins. Make sure and throw some straws and cup holders for effect.

My congratulations and condolences. Is that the large or medium? The Santos - especially on the bracelet - is my current aspirational piece. I've toyed with the idea of getting the medium quartz, but beyond a certain level I feel like the movement also has to justify the price, and as far as I know the quartz movement Cartier uses isn't anything really special like the Grand Seiko 9F or the higher end Citizen calibers. But then there's the kind of issues you have run into. If you have the large and it was offered with a quartz, would you still take it? Just curious to see what an actual Santos owner thinks. Best of luck!

Its the medium one without date. I tried the Santos Dumont in Large and XL as well (those are the Quartz ones). They were nothing for me, given the fact the strap was too thin and not my cup of tea.

The Santos de Cartier might not be the closer one history wise compared to the Dumont but it is the one to go for me.

What impressed me the most was, how thin and perfect it wears. It is almost like a wristband.

And I was shocked after wearing my Longines Hydroconquest again, how awfully bulk it wears, though I always identified it as a „flat“ diver. That was really interesting yesterday to find out how quickly someone can get used to smaller sizes.

Definitely take it back. Just a question, is it very easy to move the hands when adjusting the time? If so, the cannon pinion may be loose, which causes the seconds hand to run fine but the hours and minutes hands to lag behind. I just rectified an issue like that with a vintage Edox of mine. I'm not sure how likely it will be that the cannon pinion of a brand new watch is loose but anything is possible.

At least it seems to wind similar to my other automatics.

Sorry to hear of the troubles. Just a thought...could it have gotten magnetized some how? I had this sort of thing happen to one of my watches, and this community brought this up as a possible fix. Do you have a de magnetizer? $11 on Amazon

According to Cartier it is build from non magnetic metals

Is that so? I haven’t come across that statement yet

Thanks for sharing. I tend to steer away from larger cases - have been tempted by the older Conquest on occasion but was scared away by the 41mm size and have heard that Longines lugs tend to be proportionally long. So that's an interesting direct comparison. I feel like, even without the strap option, one could be covered for pretty much any social (that is, non- actual field or other physically strenuous) situation with a Santos; it's dressy, but it also has a slightly industrial look that makes it appropriate for a casual night out. It looks great and once it gets fixed - which the AD/Cartier really should do without hesitation, it seems - I hope you enjoy it for many years to come!
