Golfing bad for movements?

Hey Crunchers - me ahain with an old and probably often discussed topic.

Is Golf bad for the modern automatic movements?

I understand that the sudden acceleration in movement when hitting the ball on a T can cause some unregular pressure but after all with shock absorbing mechanisms it should be ok right?

Especially with IWC pilot watches which are tested to jet flights it shouldnt matter?!

In my case though i am thinking about wearing my Santos de Cartier or my Longines Hydroconquest to a golf session today.

Recommendations of do or don’t?

Why risk it?! 🤔👍🏻

I can’t see it being a problem if they’re the modern ones - I know people ride motorcycles wearing them etc. but then again I don’t play golf so what do I know. What I do know is if you’re guy says don’t, just don’t. Slap on the gshock ;)

Motorcycling should be fine, golf is something else. I don't think the issue is the single impact but more the repetitive nature of it. That cycle of acceleration, impact, deceleration is basically a self inflicted stress test for your watch. Also if mechanical watches can't handle tennis, unless you're wearing a Richard Mille, the same surely goes for golf.

My opinion, YMMV. Copy and paste from another similiar post.

You'll be fine. The lions share of the world doesn't generate enough swing speed to matter. (I'll add the club head, and shaft absorb some of the impact, especially on new drivers, woods, hybrids, and the new distance type, foam filled iron heads. Also what's the difference between any other sudden arms swings you might do throughout the day, catching something falling, grabbing a door, chasing a toddler, etc.) For reference, I've shot multiple firearm platforms with a variety of my automatics and I've been fine. (40mm, .50, and most smaller stuff) I also play as much golf as I can withvmy current work scheudle. I am back to wearing regular watches since Shotscope has released a cabinet style golf tracker that doesnt need to be on wrist. Personally I'd place the idea of golf damage to an auto close to the idea there is such a thing as dynamic water pressure when swimming. For the record/reference: MY average swing speed according to metrics from the fall when testing some new shafts at PXG in Dallas was around 103-106 mph. If I swing out of my shoes I can go over 110 mph. (Horrible results tho) I'm taller, do a ton of combat chassis workouts, and have been playing golf since 8. I have a steeper swing path and a tendency to transition too aggressively. This is also why I use long irons/driving irons, and not hybrids. Less concerned with getting the ball up, more concerned with stoping and controlling the flight path.

The last time I had my Seamaster serviced, the watchmaker said off-hand, "Now, you're not going to play golf in this, are you?" I explained to him that I can't stand golf, so there was no danger of that happening in a million years. But just an example of someone who repairs watches every day, and has done for decades, and the first thing he said to me after servicing related to not playing golf wearing that watch. Take it for what it's worth.

Playing golf with watches is okay, but to be brutally honest, I think you'd have more success if you used a club instead.

·

Yes your instruction manual says so

I am like 10 days into the cartier santos ownership and cartier sent me all these emails after registering my watch. One of which was the online instruction manual heehee. Thats why it came to mind when i saw your question. 😁

Congrats ans welcome to the Club ❤️

If a Saturn V rocket launch didn't rattle the astronauts Speedmasters enough to matter I'm going to say a few rounds of golf aren't going to be a problem

·

If the watch is a modern diver or modern sports watch it has to be ok playing golf. The impact force in golf at your wrist just isn’t that high. Maybe don’t unload that palette of bricks 🧱 after the round is finished though.

·

That's chic ! to wear with a dark blue suits

·

Rolex manual says you can play golf just fine. I’m surprised Cartier says you can’t.

·

Can’t think of any reason you need to wear a watch while golfing. Ask a ranger or use the cart computer

·

You're good to wear that watch while golfing. But why would you? Enjoy the golf course, try to beat your competitors and your best score. Forget wearing and looking at a watch while playing any type of sports activities 🤙🏽

·

Never do that.....🙏

·

You ain’t that big a hitter that this should be a concern.

·

It also says don’t wear your watch while sleeping. I have worn my watch to bed every night for ages. What else is lume good for?

·

Gotta get the Citizen Golf for those excursions!
