I don’t think too much about it with my nicer watches. I don’t want to have to think about resale value when I enjoy something. My oldest watch is essentially ‘brushed’ with thousands of micro-scratches over the years. As long as it isn’t next to a magnet or draped over my knife or something. My seikos are a little different, because I can easily adjust the timing with their position: if it was running fast that day, then I have it crown-up; if it was running slow that day, then I place it dial-up.
Haha I had the same experience with a negative display GShock Rangeman. Converted it to a positive display (my first attempt at that, thank you YouTube), and now it’s one of my favorite outdoor watches.
To quote my wife, specifically regarding my watches: “all hobbies are dumb, but if they make you happy, then do it; unless they interfere with your life or livelihood“.
Yeah, first off: Casio doesn’t count against a collection. I’ve used this logic with my wife but she respectfully disagrees. I say my ‘luxury‘ watches are the ones where I have to make tough calls. I made a promise for 1-in-1-out policy, which means I need to sell at least 2 watches. 😔
I’ve waited on a Rolex waitlist before, and they offered me the OP 39 within a month; but I had already found a perfect used example under MSRP (crazy, I know). The dysfunctional part of that equation is that I thought “Oh, I should have waited so I could establish a relationship with the dealer, and then maybe they’ll offer me a Sub some day”. We shouldn’t have to game and grovel. I shouldn’t have to think “maybe I should wear a suit to the dealer, instead of my shorts and T-shirt“. I wouldn’t mind the waitlist if I thought it was executed equitably. But that doesn’t feel like the case with Rolex.
I hate to ride the middle lane, but I love them both. I got my first Zelos recently. The new Swordfish in the bright blue full lume dial. It’s awesome. The quality to price ratio is high.
My love of Seiko isn’t really rooted in what they’re doing now. I have the SPB143, and it’s great. It looks awesome on a shark mesh, and I wear it often. But the OG’s like the SKX and SNZG are the watches I would never sell.
Also, and this is a recent development: I consider the after market support not now, but 10, 20 years from now; when considering a watch‘s value. Seiko service centers kinda suck, but at least I know there will be spare parts lying around. I can’t say the same for some of my favorite microbrands that may no longer exist.
