This watch has broken me.

What have I done? Ever since I got this Omega Planet Ocean 39.5, things haven’t been the same. I was excitedly planning to add a Grand Seiko and maybe another Sinn to the collection this year. But I’ve pretty much lost interest. My other watches all look dull. I’ve gotten a couple new watches this month, wore them for a few hours, and haven’t touched them since. Now I’m not sure when or if this honeymoon will end. I always thought the “prefect watch” was a myth. Now I’m not so sure.

Give it time and enjoy it while you feel that way with your new love.

Nice watch!

Cheers!

·

I know the feeling - I've had it more than once 😉

·

That is beautiful, a top draw watch.

I think you may have found ‘the one’. Lucky you!

·

That lume!

·

All honeymoon phases are unsustainable. It will turn to appreciation. Congrats on a very nice watch.

·

That is one formidable watch. Beautiful inside and out, and I’m not an Omega aspirant. Enjoy it (and sell it if, over time, you don’t).

·

The 39.5 PO is awesome.

·

send it back. they put the wrong colour lume on the minute hand 😜

That's a solid watch, and I think you did well. Perhaps there'll be times you don't want to wear a 'grail-level' watch when you're out and about and your other watches will have some wrist-time.

Join me for the 1-watch-way will you, young padawan!!

Or has it healed you?

We all talk about collecting as a sickness, so is this watch perfect for you and the cure?

I saw that too, it really looks green. Maybe just the lighting of that particular shot.

Omega will do that to the strongest of men. A PO is on my watch list; a 45-46 mm chronograph, orange highlights with black & orange rubber strap. Just have to talk myself into spending that much on a watch. That IS a beauty.

·

Beautiful watch. I've actually been doing research on what would be a good mid tier diver and the PO does stand out. Nice buy.

·

I bought the same Planet Ocean watch but in 43.5 mm last summer and now my Rolex and other watches sit in a safe 🤷🏻‍♂️. First Omega I have owned and I am sold.

·

I hate dive watches as a matter of principle, so I'm safe from this mind numbing problem hahaa..

That said I think this particular model is so different and popular is because it has all of it, the diver bezel, applied indices, applied arabics, arrow hands, lume for days, perfect dial colors, date, immaculate case finishing and omega branding. What else do you need?? 🤣

·

In my experience there will always be a next watch that takes that place so give it some time and enjoy it while it lasts ;)

Photos can’t do justice to how beautiful these planet oceans are. I have to constantly remind myself to wear other watches.

This version of the PO Good Planet is what got me into the hobby. The first time I saw that blue and orange bezel, I was hooked. Maybe it was 2015? It was the first watch that made me actually consider spending real money on a watch. Unfortunately, I can't pull off the size of this one and I pivoted to an Aqua Terra, but I still lust after this very watch from afar.

·

I also unexpectedly stopped buying watches after a single purchase. It didn't stop me from wearing my other watches, and in fact it's not even my first or second most worn watch since I got it. But I still feel like I understand the feeling you're talking about. It has killed off my desire for anything "better", and definitely anything more expensive.

The Rolex GMT Master II BLRO completely killed off my desire for higher end watches and now I only look at much more affordable watches that will add to the fun of my collection.

This one is a big boy but it goes with everything I wear. I also pull it off with formal wear. The blue and orange combo is mesmerizing

Am I the only person that loves that watch, but hates the (unnecessary) wart at 10 o'clock?

You're definitely not alone, but I'm not one who agrees with you. It's there for a purpose. It may not be a purpose you will use (then again how many people who own a dive watch actually use the rotating bezel?) but it does have a purpose. Similar to people who have GMT watches even if they don't travel or work with people in different time zones, or people who buy Chronographs and don't time anything with them and definitely don't use the Tach scale. It's a feature, not just a design element, so I don't consider it any less necessary than a mechanical watch.

·

don't blame you, the planet ocean looks superb and it can handle basically anything

Your exactly right, except the "feature" in question is an ugly unnecessary eyesore of a protruding wart on an otherwise beautiful watch, and any real-world utility for the wart in question evaporated decades ago.

Professional mixed gas saturation divers, who are the only people on the planet who would need a helium relief valve, don't use dive watches like these and haven't for a long time. They use dive computers.

I'd be surprised if 0.01% of the Helium valve watches ever had their valves used.

Here's the other thing- not once have I ever encountered someone saying "wow, I really love the helium escape valve on this Seamaster. It's my favorite feature!", or "That's a beautiful watch, but I wish it had Seamaster-style helium escape valve on it!".

No one loves the Seamaster for the valve, they love it despite the valve...

I can say that I’ve heard multiple people express the exact opinion you’re saying that no one does. Some people like it. It’s what’s great about watches, there are different designs for different tastes. I don’t agree with all of Omega’s choices and I’m sure they make lots of mistakes, but I don’t believe that for decades people have hated the helium escape valve and Omega has just stubbornly decided to keep it even if no one bought the watch. In fact, people kept buying the watch in such quantities that Omega not only kept making and updating them and keeping the feature, but adding new lines and expanding the product to numerous models, all with that feature. It’s one of Omega’s more successful product lines.

You’re speaking in absolutes and seem to believe that everyone shares your opinion, but it just doesn’t add up. I do believe that you hate it, I just don’t think everyone, myself included, shares your opinion. There are many watches out there with many designs, there’s no lack of great options to choose from, I just can’t get behind your assertion that ”everyone” universally dislikes a very visible stand out feature of the watch and just buys it anyway. In fact, as I’ve said, I’ve heard (or read) a number of people expressing the opposite view, who like that it’s there, providing a different profile than most of the dive watches out there, and a feature that makes the watch stand out.

I'm sure there's someone that loves the valve. There's someone out there that loves everything. There's someone out there that loves a sharp stick poked in their eye. I think most overlook it. (the valve, not the stick) I would overlook it if it were a necessary and practical feature of the watch, but it really isn't. In a world that copies every innovative, profitable and successful design that they can, no one has seemed to bother copying that valve design, at least not in any significant way.

As for my hyperbole of absolutes, my wife doesn't like it either, so you're in good company...

I liken the finding of “The one” to the phrase

“the king is dead ….long live the king” ie when the next “one” comes along

A helium escape valve is no uglier a wart than a crown. As I mentioned, I like the balance the HE valve provides. Without it, the crown would look a bit too large, IMO, and the asymmetry of the case would be much more pronounced, especially with the polished bevel so visible on the right side of the case.
