Pre-owned Submariner problems from Tourneau / Bucherer

I bought a 1991 Rolex Submariner 16610 from Tourneau (Bucherer) in New York in November of 2022. At that time, the winding action had some slippage, but it otherwise seemed all right. They assured me it had been serviced by the RSC in New York prior to sale.

The winding sensation continued to irk me, so I finally took it to the RSC where I live in Dallas. They said it didn’t look like it had been serviced, that it needed a complete overhaul, crown/stem replacement, and rotor repair. I reached out to the rep I’ve bought from at Tourneau and he sent a warranty return label.

What are the odds they perform a complete service as recommended? I’m half expecting them to just replace the crown/stem and move on. But I hope im wrong.

I'd get the return label and send it of asap just so they know the problem is from day one ,I had a similar problem with my 2005 sub it was grating when you wound it up after not being worn, came back after a service no parts like new ,I'm sure after them checking it they will do a proper job ,just expect a long wait ,if you want more technical info post your problem on the Rolex forum

Maybe a ser I've will fix it, it is overdue?

Yeah I don’t expect a prompt repair. I’d really rather they take their time and do a full service.

That’s the thing, I don’t know it’s service history. It has allegedly been serviced by Tourneau before I bought it, but the service center in Dallas (a mere 3 months later) said it did not appear to have been serviced.

All you can do is wait for it's return see what's on the paperwork and get back in touch with your original retailer

If the watch had been serviced by RSC they would have the details on file as the service is warrentied.

If the watch did not include a service card then more than likely it was not serviced by RSC.

That’s my thought too. I asked to see the service paperwork when I first purchased the watch, and got a blank look in return. So I think this will be its first service in some time.

Shady sounding lot you bought it from!

Good luck with the repair.

i would return the bloody thing with a letter from my solicitor stating fraudulent sale complaint and inform Rolex too . I would be pissed off to know I was lied to just to sell the watch .

If the watch was serviced it should come with a card that says so. If that is missing, well then...

As far as I know even locally operated "AD service centres" do that, ie give a full Rolex warranty including the plastic card with the serial number.

If something is wrong with the watch I can't imagine Bucherer won't take care of it but you never know

Good luck 👍

Get it Back to Bucherer. I am sure they will do their best to make things right with you.

I bought a vintage Speedy from them and the sales rep assured I can come in anytime If there is something wrong with the watch.

At least here in Germany they give you a two year warranty on the cpo programme, so they really have nothing to gain from selling watches that they are not sure will work. Also they would not risk loosing you as a customer for saving 100 bucks during their check-up/servicing.

This is the card you should have received,I think under the CPO program it might be white

Thanks. This was outside of the new CPO program. Tourneau has its own pre owned program, so I dont think their now-Bucherer-owned stores are doing the CPO yet.

Final update: so Bucherer had the watch evaluated by RSC in New York, who agreed the watch needed service. The watch was returned to me in early June (less than 3 months service time). I’m told that Rolex performed a complete service, but there wasn’t paperwork included. The Bucherer customer service rep said that Rolex doesn’t provide service cards with warranty service. I’ve found that to be true with other watches. I can tell from the silent rotor action, the winding, and the +1 second accuracy; that service was indeed performed.

Overall, I’m grateful that Bucherer stood behind the product. But I’m still annoyed that the watch was purported to be inspected by Rolex. They never would have let that go to sale. So, unsurprisingly, retailers hope that customers will just ‘make do’ with spit-polished and unmaintained products. I would buy from Bucherer again, but I would do so with a much more critical eye; and a demand for service documentation.
