My First "Grail"

I'm sure there isn't a more subjective word in watch collecting than "grail," but for me today is a special day. When I first got into this madness about 18 months ago, Nomos' Club Campus was literally the first watch that caught my attention... but at the time, and truthfully even a bit now, I couldn't imagine spending more than $1000 on a watch. Most of my collection is made up of microbrands in the $500ish range, but I never stopped wondering about the club campus... and yesterday it arrived. And I'm sure someday my definition of "grail" will change, but at this moment, I have the nicest watch in the world 🙂 (and feel free to tell me I have no idea what a grail is; I won't be offended)

Congratulations on your grail!! It’s a great looking watch, and one I’ve had my eye on for some time. Wear it in good health! 🍻

i'm kinda torn here

one part of me wants to tell you that your definition of 'grail' is completely wrong, but the other side is going: "wow, that's a nice watch - kinda sporty, very fresh, but still understated - this guy's got good taste even if he doesn't know what grail means" :B

Fair enough... I'm sure I don't know, and that's sort of the point 🙂 (thank you!)

Hey grails can change right? This was your grail for a long time and now you’ve achieved it. Congrats, I’m happy for you. It’s a very nice watch.

·

Congrats!!! Looks fantastic!!! I love a good blue and brown combo! You can’t go wrong with a Nomos! They do great work. Theo & Harris just made a great video when they went to visit them. If you haven’t seen it, it’s great!

I love that watch. That's my favorite color way, too. Congratulations!

·

It’s a great looking watch. Nomos seem to be doing something right - they seem to have their own unique design language and punch above their weight for a smaller brand. Enjoy!

·

Love the Club Campus, congratulations! One day I will have a teal dial one! 🤞

·

Congrats,I share your opinion.my nomos (tetra406) is a “grail” for me.

·

Thanks for sharing this. I’m kinda obsessed with German watchmaking. Partly because my grandmother and her family are from Germany so I feel sentimental about these companies.

"Grail" is not subjective. Its very meaning is that it's an OBjective of a prolonged endeavor. "Your" definition of grail can change, and "my" definition of grail can change, but THE definition of the word grail does not change, no matter how dumb and/or arrogant we are to think we could change it at will or come up with a better definition.

Let's take the actual definition, which is the "objective of a prolonged endeavor." Five words, perfectly and I would say even 'elegantly' stated. Even if I wanted to (which I don't) I couldn't come up with a better and clearer definition than that. Having accepted this definition, we can now easily apply it to your Nomos, or indeed any watch, at any time, ad infinitum.* For the watch to be a grail, it has to satisfy both criteria in the definition.

-Did a person have to endeavor to get the watch?

-Was that endeavor prolonged?

If the answer to both is yes, it's a grail. If the answer to either one or both is no, then it's not a grail.

*pretentious foreign phrase

This is a beautiful watch. Congratulations! I’m headed to Cincinnati to do some “Christmas shopping “ this weekend which really means stopping by the Nomos AD to hopefully try this one, the pink and the orange.

I live 25 minutes away from Cincinnati in Alexandria KY. Who is the Nomos AD in Cincy?

Richter and Phillips downtown. Super nice (dm me for the person I’m working with) and good follow up.

Thank you so much. I know where they are. I have a watch from there that Dad got me for Christmas 1986. I didn't know they sold Nomos.

In the 1960s they used to build Gruen watches in Cincinnati not that far from there.
