Why The Hate/Love Towards Panerai?

Hello all. I was wondering something: Some years ago, I came across the Panerai brand of watches. Although they are way out of my budget, I really didn't see anything that bad about them.

Years later, I was watching a Youtube video on how Panerai started to cut cost on their watches, especially on their engraving in their etching in the movement when you take off the back cover and without the engraving it makes it easier for scammers to copy the movement and sell it as real but in the end, it's a fake Panerai.

I want to hear from Panerai owners on this one. What have been your experiences with the watches/customer service/ authorized dealers etc.?

Okay Crunchers, you know the drill😎

Not sure if my input will help you but here goes. At first I thought the brand was just ok. Big watches for big wrists. I have a boutique in town and the Mananger is a good guy. He walked me through the differences in the models and i was sold on a 233 gmt. At this point I had no idea regarding the problems with the fakes. So now I really like the 233. A 346 comes next. Then the 305 sub. The whole time not paying attention to the problem of fakes. So while I still have the three watches I’ve not had a problem or concern about any of them. Bottom line is the same. Buy the selller. Watches are terrific if you like the style.

Panerai is by far one of my favorite watch brands. I own a luminor Marina 8 day with the exhibition case back and it’s just an amazing watch. There are a lot of haters out there for certain reasons but Panerai offers a great product that is so unique and unlike any other watch on the market. Once you wear one you will understand

Here's the video that I was referring to. The whole movement issue that I mentioned about is at the 7:10 minute mark.

I think the “problem” with Panerai can be summed up by a phrase - Hublot with history. Panerai makes big, expensive (for “teh speks”) showy watches, which attract the kind of watch buyer who wants a big, expensive, showy watch, specs be damned. The brand became popular very quickly in the early 2000’s due to celebrity association. All of the above can be said of Hublot. Watch dorks hate that kind of thing.

While they’re not for me - though I do like the smaller Radiomirs - they’re great for what they are.

·

I have no issues other than the price, some of the folks associated with the brand, and in recent years, the dumbing down of the product line.

IE: they make a watch that looks like this that finally fits my wrist:

But it has the water resistance of this:

Honestly, they have some nice looking pieces lately, that at the right price can be a very cool add to the collection.

I haven’t considered one because of their management. Talk about a company with utter contempt for its customers.

Look up Panerai Brooklyn Bridge. But that’s an old story you might say… and you would be right. It’s just that the contempt of customer is an ongoing pattern from the highest ranks of corporate management, as you can see from other more recent scandals.

I have no issues with the watches when they are what’s advertised. But I don’t know that I want to reward management that misleads its customer base so often.

·

I don’t have one but I love the history of the company

This is literally Watch Flexing! You got the guns to pull that off. I couldn't do that today. Keep up the good/hard work !

Panerai has a bit of history on some dubious movement claims. I own one and love it! Panerai is moving past their negative vibe and making great watches

Haha thank you! Got to keep the wrist arm strong

·

The hate originated from them lying about the movements they used in the past, why it is still going on I don't know. They do have quite a strong following though so much like hublot I don't think they really care.

·

Here's a whole new rabbit hole: if you wanna get down to the real nitty gritty on Panerai, check out the "Perezcope" blog!

·

They're a bit large for my tastes, but they make a really sweet watch. A few guys in my club have them and I love checking out the different models. All are very nicely made watches with a very unique look.

·

Folks who love them, really love them, the critics and haters will criticize and hate because that is human nature. I have a friend who amassed a large collection of JLC Reversos, bought them without too much thought until one day he sold off every one except for one which he gave to his wife to buy Panerai watches which he favours still today. The Reversos were watches his influential friends recommended he source, the Pams he purchased for himself to wear!

·

Love my Pam 312, for me it's just so different from any other watch I own. It's as tough as nails and is a real strap moster.

Image
·

I used to be a hater. Not anymore. One of my favorite watches to wear, and since I got mine my other watches have severely taken a back seat. Strap monster is a cliche term but man that's exactly what panerais are. I do have some opinions on certain models being very watered down and cutting corners. But there are some models out there that check a lot of boxes as the true panerai experience (aka not the Due...)

Image
·

Because their service has been s***

·

I love the PAM321 that I have. I don't think they will disappoint if you like the style of their watches.

I have heard that about QC issues during the current CEO's tenure, and I do hope they be addressed soon.

I feel that their marketing campaign with celebrities shall not take away the fact that they are a brand with heritage.

If wearing one would mean I’ll get that bicep of yours… I’ll buy 2.

While there are similarities between the brands, the major distinction is that panerai has a clear design language that's been unwavering for over a century. Hublot, not so much...

Of course, there’re tons of differences between the two brands. The ‘with history’ modifier is a reference to Panerai’s design heritage. The comp to Hublot is about how enthusiasts respond to the brand.

That consistent design is the biggest problem I have with Panerai (other than, you know, my relative poverty so I can’t afford one 😄): they haven’t had anything new in the ~20 years I’ve been aware of them. It’s all just variations on 2 themes, and based on an interview with their CEO that I read last year, it’s unlikely they’re going to.

To me, that’s a shame. Panerai is the leading Italian watch brand. I feel like they should command the space they own and lead the way with what Italian watch design should be today, rather than just rely on the past. They of course shouldn’t leave the Radiomir and Luminor behind, but add to their lines something new, if only as an experiment at first.

Nah, Porsche would be comparable if they only ever had the 911 and never did the Cayenne, Macan, Taycan, Carrera GT, etc. 😁

Yeah I was thinking 🤔 the same thing. Can say the same of the Rolex Submariner and Daytona. Iconic design means you don't need to do much..... they endure over time (no pun intended)
