Should I sell my Speedmaster for a Seamaster?

Hello fellow crunchers, I’m in need of your assistance. I’m considering selling my speedmaster to purchase a seamaster and would love to hear your input!

A few (or more) points of consideration:

  1. Icon Status - Both have their history and status, but I’ll touch on something a little different here. I feel as though the speedmaster is more understated, but also more recognizable to normies (especially post-moonswatch). On the other hand, the seamaster is a bit more flashy with the ceramic bezel and high contrast dial, yet may just seem like a nice watch and not instantly recognizable to non-watch nerds. Not sure where I stand on this to be honest. I kind of like the idea of flying under the radar while having a nice watch that I personally enjoy and other watch nerds might appreciate though so kind of 50/50 here.

  2. Water Resistance - The depth rating on the seamaster is much better than the speedmaster. As I’m sure is the case for many, I’m certainly no diver, but I like the sense of security that comes from extra wr.

  3. Bracelet - The bracelet on the speedmaster is fantastic (imo) while the bracelet on the seamaster is way too chunky for me. If I get a seamaster it would be on the rubber strap but would consider getting a third party bracelet from Forstner or an Omega mesh.

  4. Functionality - The functionality of a timing bezel vs a chronograph. Neither is a clear winner here for me. The only time I’ve used the chronograph function has been when I have happened to have the speedy on while exercising (which was certainly not ideal, but handy at the time). The only time I’ve used a a bezel to time things was to time when my laundry would be done 😂

  5. Cost - If I didn’t already own the speedy the seamaster would be the clear winner here. Technically I’d be losing money selling the speedy to buy the seamaster even if I end up with a few dollars left over. That said, I think there is some value in getting to experience different watches (and not just trying them on in the store, but experiencing day to day ownership and usage). Additionally, factoring in the cost of servicing down the line, the seamaster would be less expensive to maintain.

  6. Wearability/Potential FOMO - I have 6.5” wrists and the speedy is kind of at my upper limit. The seamaster has a slightly larger lug to lug, but I think I can make it work. However, if Omega were to revamp the seamaster line within the next few years and say, put out a 38-41mm SMP on an updated, tapering bracelet, I would be sad and filled with the type of regret that only other watch lovers can fathom.

Where do you all stand on this? What other points would you consider if you were deciding between the two?

UPDATE: Wow, lots of great feedback. Thank you! Actually went to try on the seamaster again today and still think it’s a great watch, but as some people have pointed out, I think I would regret selling the speedmaster.

Initially, part of my intent in selling the speedy to fund the seamaster was also to keep the collection lean and representing only one watch per brand. As nice as that sounds on paper, upon reflection, it’s kind of a silly self imposed rule and maybe we should all just get and wear what we like/is financially do-able.

I think the speedy and smp are quite different and actually work nicely together in a collection. New game plan is to keep the speedy and save up for the smp and cross my fingers that Omega puts out a revamped smp with smaller dimensions and an updated bracelet in that timeframe 🤞

Thanks again for all of the great advice and words of wisdom!

if you can have both, that’s my 2 cents 😜

I also considered trading my black SMP for a white one though… 🤔

That was my 7th, unmentioned point of consideration 🤣

Dont really know what advice to give, other than the SMP on rubber works on your wrist (way better than the bracelet would at 6.5") but the Speedy just looks better.

But then again, perhaps you're just a tad bored with it and want smth new.

·

Specs schmecs. On paper a G-Shock is better than either.

It’s just a matter of what you like better.

To me the Speedmaster is the best looking sports watch of all time, but there sure are a lot of them out there.

Meanwhile, to me, the SM300 is “just another diver.”

·

Get the SMP.

If you already had the SMP, I would say go get the Speedmaster.

Variety is the spice of life!

·

I have the SMP and have toyed with the idea of swapping it out for a speedy 😅 So I’ll give you my reasons as the perspective from the other side.

@Ichibunz has done it right.

The Speedy definitely wears better for smaller wrists like mine. But the SMP is way more of a beater so I use it without ever worrying. The bracelet is terrible so I also opted for rubber. You can buy a shortened rubber strap from omega if necessary. The bracelet on the speedy is one of my favourite bracelets across all brands that I’ve tried, if not the favourite. The wave dial is less busy and more fun. The speedy has the backstory and heritage which many may say doesn’t really matter. And it doesn’t in terms of the watch itself but it does feel more prestigious on the wrist.

So I think the grass always looks greener. Bottom line is 2 fantastic watches and you can’t really go wrong either way.

·

The Speedy is my Grail so that would be a no-go for me.

If I owned a Speedy already, I'd be looking for an additional diver, probably from another brand. A Squale, a Breitling Superocean or a Grand Seiko.

That's me.

YMMV

·

No!!!! Please don’t

·

speedy wins

·

God gave you two kidneys for a reason!

·

Get both (if you can) !

·

Seamaster all the way. I have a one chrono in my collection and yet I have zero use for the complications only that I like the design. 😂I’m even thinking about selling it. For me, I like watches that are time or time and date only. Maybe I’m a kinda OCD and like my dial quite clean and uncluttered and not have a lot of literature either.

·

I've a speedmaster 1863 movement hesalite and an SMP 300 and the bracelet is the downfall on both, the clasp on the seamaster is fantastic in operation but its too big along with the bracelet so I swap between 3rd party bracelet and straps.... I just can't bring myself to sell the speedy because it's a SPEEDY. And I love the Seamaster because it ISN'T a boring submariner.. The Speedmaster has a STORY and a certain kudos, I've complimented people on their submariner to be met with a blank stare.... But you say "nice Speedy" it's a conversation starter and a connection.....

Keep the speedy and save for the Seamaster

·

Both!

The answer is "yes." Should you sell your Speedmaster to buy a Seamaster? Yes. Should you keep your Seamaster? Yes. Should you keep them both? Yes. Should you sell both and buy 5 x $1000 microbrands? Yes. If you sell one to buy the other and don't like it? Sell the other and buy the original again. You can do that with watches today with minimal to no financial repercussions. And were you to buy a Monta, Nodus, Halios, Chris Ward, and a Vaer for the price of a Seamaster, would you be happier? Probably. And if not, you can sell every single one of those watches for near sticker price and buy a Seamaster with the proceeds.

Do it all. Do it all twice. The number of times I've gone from my perfect 4 watch collection up to 15 watches and back again is hard to count. I swear I'm done now, but I'm here looking at watches.

Buy both. Sell the one you wear the least after 3 months. Or keep them both. And then buy a 3rd.

Why not?

I bought a 2014 Speedmaster last year used from chrono24, and it was pretty much completely unused.

When winding the watch the first 2 weeks, you could feel heavy resistance, as if it was new. So i guess it was in a safe for 6 years and i got lucky. 😀

That's so dope dude. I think the used market would be flush with speedys given how many were made for so long.

Is it a 1861?

·

Take a look at the Seamasters 225.80 or the 2254.50. Older models from early 2000’s that can be gotten at a discount to sit with your Speedy, they come with the Speedy bracelet and clasps, are much slimmer than the modern SMP and they have brilliant military-sequences sword hands rather than the skeleton used on the Bond and Post-Bond models (always think this is what 007 would have actually worn, more similar to MOD models). Think they’d be great companions for the Speedy.

I’ve never been able to decide myself!

·

Nahhh, keep it bro. I would love to have both of them.

·

This may be out of left field but have you considered the aqua terra 38 mm on a rubber strap?

I don't own the Speedmaster or the SMP 300 at the moment but I've been playing with the idea of the Aqua terra 38 in a while now. Tried it in store and I can say that it feels better on the wrist compared to the speedmaster and SMP 300. I have a 6.75 inch wrist.

And like everyone else's input have both of them! haha!

Good suggestion! I actually tried on the AT on bracelet when I went back to try on the SMP again. It’s always intrigued me and I think it’s a very handsome watch (I’ve even considered just going full Omega—blue dial AT, white SMP, black speedy!) but when I tried it on it just wasn’t for me. I feel like it actually wears big for a 38mm. Wish they were still making them in 36. Ultimately, I kind of like how tool-y and more specialized the speedy and SMP are 🤷🏻‍♂️

A Seamaster won’t as good with those Tom Sachs General Purpose shoes. Just say’n.

Understood, tough decisions to make haha! I’ve been eyeing on the Aqua Terra 38 with the white dial on rubber strap. But I hear you that SMP white dial on black bezel looks 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Getting both is always the solution🤙

·

I have both watches, the seamaster in blue on a bracelet, I reckon they get about 50/50 on the wrist, I tend to wear the speedy if going out somewhere a bit up market though.

·

I think your updated plan is the best . I would like to own both.
