Best Speedy Test?

Before I vesting significantly in a Speedmaster, I'd like to test the waters, so to speak.

Which Speedy inspired watch would you recommend? Why?

I would think that something like the Seagull 1963 or another watch using the ST1901 movement would be a better test, as it is a mechanical chronograph and would give you a better feel for what a mechanical chronograph is like to own and wear.

Good point!

Moonswatch, coz it's a legit homage made/endorsed by Omega.

(Tho I got a Bulova Lunar Pilot, that would be my recommendation as it's got real history and heritage & isn't a copy/clone)

·

The Pagani because it is the best interpretation of the Speedmaster. The Moonswatch is the wrong color and weight. The Pagani has an easily replaceable movement that is widely available model wrapped up in a Sapphire / metal case.

·

The Phylida Speedmaster homage with the ST19 Seagull movement. Best homage money can buy.

Agree - it’s both a close homage and has a mechanical movement … at a budget price.

Invest significantly in a Speedmaster, there is no worthy substitute!

I'm wearing a Pagani Design PD1701v3 today ... I know it isn't really a "Moonwatch" Speedmaster, but I love it because it really is a decent homage to the history that I've been fascinated with since my childhood back in the 60's! 👍😎

Thanks! Where did you pick this up? I thought the ST1901 was a bi-compax movement? Do all the 3 sundials function?

·

The Moonswatch is notorious for sweating the die off of the case onto your wrist. Even though its endorsed by Omega it is just a Swatch. So the real question with a Moonswatch is do you want a colorful wrist and a faded caseback? The Pagani looks better and for $73 you're getting the Seiko VK63 Mekaquartz movement. That's an awesome movement. I have a couple of Paganis and they are both solid watches. Genuinely impressed with Pagani's quality for the pricepoint.

I had not seen the Phylida! This would definitely make the most sense!

I believe it uses the ST1903 movement, which is a three sundial version of the ST1901 movement.

The bulova lunar pilot should be your only other speedy alternative. Great back story, great looking watch, very cool movement, and is a strapmonster as well. I know Pagani and Phylida make cool homages too but the legitimate contender is the Bulova 🚀

The ST19 movement is a beautiful piece to look at. This picture doesn't do it any justice excuse my camera skills lol 😂 Good luck with your search and choice. Stay Thirsty My Man 🍻👊🏽

I bought this on AliExpress for $289 CDN. All the sundials work as they should for a chrono movement.

Honestly speedy + gshock would be a great collection for anyone. You are a smart human haha

I appreciate that, thank you! I however, know I'm as dumb as a bag of hammers and only half as useful 😂

But that would be a good collection, I think. For many years I was a 1 watch guy, and kind of miss that...

Yes and no, I think. I don't see the Bulova as a Speedy homage, but rather as it's own watch, the "other moon watch." Or a modern reinterpretation of the original, at the very least.

The only issues I have really are the size and cost. At 45mm and 43.5mm for the "reduced" these are simply too large for my wrist. And at over $600 for the newer reduced version, that's a heck of a lot for a watch to test the water with...

If they brought it down to 40-42mm and slimmed it a little I'd be all over it as a watch. Perhaps even displacing my consideration of a Speedy altogether. I LOVE the accuracy of that precisionist movement!

I have to agree with you here. I love the Lunar Pilot and even had one. It is a watch with a great heritage and movement. It just didn't fit my wrist, which is not small at 7.5". The case is 45mm and flat, so it looked and felt much larger than 45mm. It wore larger on my wrist than my Seiko Arnie, which is almost 3mm wider in diameter. As much as I liked it, I never wore it, so I eventually sold it.

·

Just get the speedy there is no substitute. If you want to test the waters to see if you want to invest get down the local AD first thing in the morning try it on then ask loads of questions about it keep checking it by the window in different lights your goal is to still have it on at closing a good 8hrs should tell you either way 😁

·

Moonswatch in gray or a Bulova Lunar Pilot.

·

I'm also waiting for Bulova to release a even smaller Lunar Pilot. Until then I enjoy my Pagani with an Uncle Seiko bracelet (that was more expensive than the watch).

Thanks! I think they're sold out on AliX, unfortunately. This would be the test of the Speedy for sure given the design and functionality. Not sure when/if they might be back in stock, but I'll ask the seller.

Thanks!!

Yeah they sell out fast! Search on YouTube this specific watch and you'll get some idea of what the watch is like.

Absolutely. This is a true end-game watch for me. This requires selling on my entire collection. Speedy + GShock would be the "collection" at that point (because everyone needs a GShock...)

So not a decision to be taken lightly

You could also get a reduced speedy too. I think taste change from time to time. You might change your taste and find speedy too complicated. I would say slow down a bit. No need to build the perfect collection so fast

I've thought about the Speedy reduced for sure. The odd thing there is the prices of the reduced (at least on C24) are quite high for what you're getting, and there not far off the actual Speedy Pro, really.

Some of the Speedy racing models are still more reasonably priced though and you can get some interesting dials and layouts for sure there.

None - save up and get the real deal, its worth it.

It's still amazing to me how that whole, "the MoonSwatch is an Omega" vibe has cut through with people who, ostensibly, are supposed to "know watches". It's a Swatch every day of the week. No more, no less. A Swatch cosplaying as an Omega. It doesn't come from the Omega factory. Yet you just know that vibe is why some people are still buying it and obsessing over it - they really think they're wearing an Omega. You're not, guys.

I don't think anyone is debating whether a MoonSwatch is or isn't an Omega. From the point of view of my question though, it would be a valid way to test the case size/shape and colour (to an extent), before I spend a significant amount of capital on a Speedy.

Though, in one sense, being owned by the Swatch Group, an Omega is a Swatch 🤯😂

You'd be surprised. The inference that it's an Omega comes up often on this forum.

1 watch would be so convenient

It is convenient for sure - it just has to be the right watch. For me, for years, that was my Seamaster SMP Quartz. Which is still a beloved cornerstone of my collection.

Alpha 1993 make a watch almost identical to the speedy, Seagull movement https://alpha-1993.com/collections/chronograph/products/mechanical-chronograph-watch-1
