I have 13 Seikos and they are all either Essentials or Seiko 5s. I have 8 Hardlex and 5 sapphires. No scratches on any, even though 2 of my little old-school Seiko 5s (with Hardlex) suffered horrendous falls.
For whatever reason, the original SKX never resonated with me. You're right that the SRPD is a better watch in every way, especially the movement which replaces the old 7s26. I have the SRPD59, the orange one. Looks great, good bracelet, accurate movement, and all for $180.
Seiko still makes plenty of watches a regular guy can afford. I also have the new SUR517P1. Really impressive black "grid" dial, SAPPHIRE!!! (yawn), super accurate quartz, beautiful metalwork. It was $160.
That's great, thank you - I figured there would be a few wardrobe malfunctions! I'll just have to wait for the outtakes reel.
