Will Seiko ever make proper a reinterpretation of the SKX?

I know it’s onlya few years since they killed it off but do you think the big wigs at Seiko will ever make a ‘proper’ reinterpretation of the SKX with modern specs and high end bracelet and sapphire crystal? (the SSK/SRPD do not fill the void.) If they ever did, would you buy it and what would be the most you’d pay?

Hard to say. The SKX already has a bunch of homage watches and knock offs that have filled the gap that Seiko left. They’d have to move it up market and that would probably turn a lot of fans away (similar to the newly released marine master).

·

Nope.

Seiko longs to play with the swiss "big boys". If it ever comes, it'll be at minimum 3x the price.

Honestly wish they'd just own their own awesome heritage and just rock it (heritage) tbh. Solar, Prospex, dive, alpinist, perpetual calendar divers, etc.

And the SRPD is the successor. Better watch in every way. Disregard the Internet fascination with sapphire, every time anyone gets a poll on here about damaged hardlex, not as many takers as we have been lead to believe.

·

They already make modern versions... The SPB315/313.

The SKX does not meet current ISO dive watch standards, because it is missing an index at the 3 o'clock position. So any attempt to make a version with a modern movement and sapphire would be a "lesser" version, as it wouldn't be a "Diver's" watch.

·

I think from the point of view of Seiko, the Kamasu/Mako III fills in the upgraded SKX slot with their subsidiary brand Orient.

Agreed, the main appeal of the SKX was a proper diver at a bargain basement price point and if it were 3x the price, it would have flopped. The SRPD has most of the SKX’s look but the it’s missing a lot of the specs and did they need to put the automatic in that tacky cursive font! An SRPD with a dial that apes the retro colours of the skx would be nice! I’ve no complaints about the hardlex but sapphire would be even better for durability. Citizen manage to put sapphire on some of their budget watches, eg. the SARB-killer NB4040, and that’s going for old SKX money.

·

That’d be double what I would pay!

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Mako III! You’re absolutely right, it’s got all the right specs and price point of it and if you squint, it has a similar aesthetic. I googled and found that Orient have another watch called the Triton and it looks even more like the SKX, especially the one with pepsi bezel. Very nice shout, cheers!

I think the SPB313/315 don’t really look much like the SKX as the case shape is turtley! Not really digging that aesthetic (although it is a lovely watch). It’s also ~ 3X the price! In terms of the ISO, how much would it cost to put a lume dot marker at 3 o’clock to the right of the date window?

·

Yes, PROSPEX spec for around £2.5k with 6L or something movement. (Like the Umura compared to the Willard, or numerous 62MAS reinterpretations)

They'll sell loads. 🤔

·

In a few years they will release a limited edition SKX revival for $1600 that will sold out in 1h. 😂

The days of Seiko being the go-to affordable brand are gone. Long live the Kamasu.

·

I had the original and I sold it 😕 I wish I hadn't but I didn't wear it, I look now and they are £300 plus, I'd like to see Seiko remake one! I'd buy and keep that!

·

The design language of the original has been done to death in Seikos catalogue at this point I don't see the reason for it

·

No.

·

The skx is actually very underrated. Although, specs wise it may not be up to far with prospex divers, it has a charming wabi sabi feel to it. Looking at seiko now, I think if they keep the looks and upgrade the specs of the skx, it may just be another limited edition

I think they’d sell bucketloads if they could release one with the same specs, design and of course, affordability. It’s still got a big following and people new to watches are getting into them as well, arguably more so than any other Seiko.

Let’s not forget that part of what made the SKX such an unbeatable proposition in terms of price was the usage of a 7S26 movement. We would rip Seiko apart if they dared releasing a dive watch with a non-hacking, non-handwinding watch that can barely hold a regulation. Want a diver with a modern 4R36 on it? They already exist, and they cost what they cost…

EDIT: Thinking of that all painted dial too. No applied anything. Costs were saved in this sort of things that we see as charming features today, which we would revolt against if found in a new model.

This is right on.

·

They already do make something and it is called the Marinemaster. You will have to part with many of your pesos to get the MM. The draw of the SKX has always been price/bang for buck ratio. Upgrading it would kill it as a value diver.

·

Is there really much demand for such a thing?

·

The SRPD is essentially the same watch with a slightly different movement and less water resistance.

·

Haha beat me to the punch!

Then they’ll follow up with a blacked out LE for twice that

·

Doubt it. From a branding POV all the non-ISO rated divers are in-line with 5 Series, whereas the higher-end Prospex handle the stronger specs. SKX was that odd one out that handled it all. Would be great to see it come back with a modern movement though. I own the 007 with an upgraded NH movement and now it's the only diver I need (I will eat my words soon, I know it).

·

Nope. The Seiko 5 has twin it's place in the style and price category and a number of Prospex divers have taken its dive watch place.

·

And make sure to misalign the bezel (i honestly don’t know what it means, but it pops up a lot)

·

Seiko 5

·

They will make it and they will buy it. Not me at this time.

I missed out on the SKX but the Orient Ray 2 is a fantastic watch!!!

·

The answer to your question is the king turtle. It has a sapphire and similar size and wearing experience to the skx. Different looks but really the turtle and king turtle have carried the skx torch in terms of value/spec driven diver in the Seiko catalogue. Other value alternatives would be have samurai or tuna equipped with the 4R

Wow, thanks for pointing out the Ray 2, it looks fantastic! I never knew they made such a watch. I only knew about their Bambinos!

Can never replace the Old charm of the SKX

·

Also in actual answer to your question. I don't think they will reissue a 200m dive skx upgrade. It seems like Seiko want to keep the SKX case for the 5 series.

The only hope is that if they do reissue it, it will be king turtle price range with a 4R movement as it isn't a heritage diver like the 1960-1970 re-issues that carry a cost premium
