My first Grand Seiko and collection goals

Oh my... so this happened over the weekend, while we were visiting Edinburgh.

We strolled into Chisolm Hunter on Princes Street, I had done some research before and knew what they had in stock there.

I had a look at the Grand Seiko Iwate (SBGW303) and it completely blew me away.

I was planning on saving up some money to add a Aqua Terra down the road, but when I put them side by side in the store, the Iwate knew it was coming home with me.

I've been stalking around Grand Seiko for a while, but there was always something that bothered me with the lineup: the date window (and frame), the size is usually just a tad too big for my taste, the spring drive (I love the idea and smooth sweep, but 3k extra over an automatic is currently not for me).

The manual calibre, the amazing finish, the incredible colors, the size, the weight, the looks, no date... everything about the Iwate was just right.

Usually I don't really care for limited editions, but the fact that this is one of 400 and the AT is basically unlimited, was actually a factor for me this time around.

The biggest change for me now, though, is that I have decided on where to take the collection from here on.

A few weeks ago I was asking the question if anyone was thinking about selling it all for the one:

Do you ever think about selling it all and getting "the one"? | WatchCrunch

For me the answer is clear now: yes and no 😄

I will be downsizing my collection, the goal is: Iwate, Spirit 37 and AT 38 blue (in no order)

So basically sell watches for the Iwate and add the AT later.

I know I probably couldn't be a one-watch-guy, but 3 watches feel like my sweet spot.

The whole weekend and flight back, I've basically been staring at this thing am just in awe of the watch. I'm super excited and can't wait to see where it all goes from here.

P.S. If anyone sees anything they like in my collection, send me a DM, basically everything (except the Spirit, Carrera and Junkers) will gradually leave the box in the next few months. Will be on Chrono24 and some local German sites.

That is an absolutely gorgeous watch. Congratulations !!

For me?

Aquaterra

Longines

Fantastic 3 watch collection!

My only suggestion, if you go formal enough, would be a gold dress watch. Something like a JLC master thin, or a Cartier (?).

I see what you mean, but don't think I go formal enough for a gold watch anymore. Things have changed a lot since COVID 🙈

Congrats to the new GS 💪😊

Wow, that is a gorgeous piece. I’m a sucker for the 44GS case myself.

Can relate to that 😂 thought it would be too small from the data on paper, but wears so nicely in person! You tried one on yet, or is your blue GS a 44GS case as well?

My SLGH009 is a 44GS. I adore this watch, it is my favorite watch in my collection. Also a LE which I agree adds a little extra to the enjoyment.

Yeah we're not usually the champagne and boutique couple, but it was a fun experience!

The bubbles always help make it memorable, as long as not too many!😅

·

Oh I agree, ever since I laid eyes on it, it's been my go to.

Its so well made, the ideal size, legible and just a pleasure to get lost in the details.

Now I think the GS and Spirit complement eachother nicely and will probably share all the wrist time.

Beautiful watch. Skip the Longines. GS and blue Aqua Terra. Done.

Kind of sucks that it’s only offered in Europe.

Yeah, don't know what's going on with local exclusives... But I think on chrono24, they're basically available globally anyway 🙈

Great watch, didn’t know of this reference but probably my favourite GS.

I think there might be about 8 color variants of this model already (including some regional exclusives though).

But yeah, I feel it's a good move towards more mass appeal for GS, for better or for worse 😉

I think it will be popular for sure, lovely dial texture and colour and no date, absolute winner.

For sure, especially here in Europe, I think they're working on getting their watches out there and gaining market share. I got a good discount on mine ;)

Beautiful watch! Just saw on your recent post that you bought it in Edinburgh so pardon me for going back in time to see where you got it from! I've bought two watches from CH on Prince's St and it's been a pleasant experience, ended up spending most of the time just chatting about watches we liked! Sadly the watches I was buying were already on sale (as a Yorkshireman I'm a sucker for a discount!) so no further discounts and no bubbles for me 😜 but I did get a nice invite to their grand seiko event which was a fun night. Must be a fun experience buying a watch on holiday and bringing it home. I'll do that one day I'm sure!
