Will lume technology improve?

Maybe those who have been into watches for longer than me will have a better perspective and more knowledge.

Nothing exciting has happened on the lume front since I got into this hobby about five years ago. The likes of Seiko, Omega, Tudor and so on got really good lume for the most part. Some micro brands also got real quality lume.

But still there are reputable brands that makes watches that has terrible lume. I wouldnthink that by now good lume was tech everybody had access to. And I wouldn't think it wouldn't be so hard. But I know very little about lume beyond the fact that they dig it out of a mountain and it reacts to light.

What interest me is if there will be any further innovations? Sometimes the lume is strong but doesn't last long enough and need improvement IMO. Will someone try to add anything new to the makeup to make it better. Or is lume-tech on the back burner because it's considered good enough?

I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

Functionally, I don't need burn-your-eyes-out brightness, but do appreciate an all night glow. Brands like Ball, Luminox, and Marathon (to name a few) all leverage tritium tubes to varied success. To your point though, I'd love to see more variation in shapes and designs.

I was wondering the same thing myself as I have some watches that have different types of lume. Check out this article. Hope it helps :)

Now that we've discovered these at the bottom of the sea, maybe we can use their bioluminescence?

I am already blown away by how good BGW9 SuperLuminova is but would love to see some more colour variations if possible.

My understanding is, companies are constantly making small improvements in the grades of lume paint, but they are small improvements.

With tritium tubes and quartz watches with lights, there is little need to spend a lot of time/energy looking for lume paint improvements.

I feel like your last sentence can apply to all watches in general, but shhhhh let's just keep that to ourselves 😂

WE DEMAND IMPROVEMENTS AND LOWER COSTS

I dunno what lume my Black Bay 36 got, but that is possibly the best one I ever have owen. My Marine Master Tuna had stronger lume in the beginning (very functional for diving), but by the morning my BB36 would shine brighter.

Tritium also got it's drawbacks. I think I would prefer classic lume 🤔 And there aren't too many brands offering tritium.

I don't have a need to have my eyes liquified, but it would be nice with consistant and long lasting lume 😊

I think lume is strong enough as it is! My wife will make me sleep under the bed if my Lume wakes her up.

My and my wife have lumewars if I got a new watch lately. It's always annoying because her affordable Seiko is always better and on par with whatever my new purchase is.æ 🤪

my Phoibos EagleRay GMT quartz has a blue lume that looks like a lightning bolt. I actually pissed off a friend when we are on a kayak trip keeping him up at night in the tent.

I'm sure most of us have seen Jody's "just one more watch" Lume wars vids on Youtube, I think the out right winner was the Signum Cuda,

Well worth a look, there is always the Timex indiglow function on a quartz watch which is hard to beat to see the time in pitch darkness.

For the best lume in the watch industry go Luminox !

Their watches' lume can constantly glow 24/7 for 10-20 years.

Mido CEO interviewed by Teddy B recently, had a day of the dead Mexico release painted skull dial all different colours lume !!! Go figure the answer appears to be yes 🙌

I am in agreement with those who are stating the lume currently available is more than adequate. I have no problem seeing the time at night on most of my watches. One brand I haven't seen mentioned that has great lume is Citizen. My Promaster Diver is visible all through the night.

I agree that there are good lume on many watches. But I hope that new developments will make good and lasting lume the norm across the board

I have seen those

I don't like to have to push a button to get light. Hard to do if I got a wife or kid sleeping on my arm.

Great find. I would personally like to see more red and yellow Lume used in dial / handset design.

It's not as bright or legible as C3 Green or BGW9 Cyan but could nicely compliment them.

My 30 year old LLBean indiglo watch just finally died last week. Thought it was just the battery but sadly it was not.

I think during the last 5 years smartwatch screens have improved with respect to their brightness, does that count 😜?

Okay, but how about glowing liquids and numerals powered by a dynamo or otherwise mechanical in nature (so no batteries)?

The HYT H4 Metropolis has a dynamo

Image

and so does the De Bethune DB28GS

Image

There are other methods of actively "mechanical" illumination such as the Van Cleef & Arpels Lumineux watches
