Need Help! Everyday Watch Sub-$1,000 USD

Hello Crunchers!

I need some help to find an everyday watchunder $1000 USD! I've been looking for months on end and have some idea of what I might purchase but I'd love to hear some suggestions from you guys.

Some criteria for me would be;

  • Under 40mm case diameter

  • Reasonable lug-to-lug measurement and case thickness

  • Automatic or Manual Winding

  • Metal Bracelet

  • Black, White, Grey Dial (Something understated in colour

Baby Snowflake - super comfortable because of titanium case, 100M WR, 70hr PR, but most importantly, check out that dial!

I really like the PRX white dial with gold hands, Powermatic 80 movement, around $700, but you can get it cheaper. I also have a Longines Conquest silver dial, but also comes in black, that you can usually find on sale for under $1000, the automatic should run you around $800 or so for a 39mm.

I actually have one already! It's honestly my favourite piece, but for my style I find it a little too dressy unfortunately. I don't find I can pull it off all the time and it bugs me haha.

Awesome! Very cool watch and great specs for the price. Would you stay it wears bigger than a 39mm? For some reason every time I see it in pictures it looks kinda big. Thanks!

It does wear a little big, but I think that’s mostly because of the integrated bracelet rather than the size of the watch. They are really good looking though.

I think Casio Oceanus is the answer here. Solar and atomic clock means you'll never have to set it, and their cases are made in the same factory as Grand Seiko!

I also am happy with my Seiko Sharp Edge, if you need a mechanical movement

I really like Casio Oceanus, but personally I prefer mechanical movements. I had looked into the Sharp Edge series for a while. How do you find the size? Seems like it's a nice size at about 39mm but it looks like its got a lot of dial. Does it appear bigger?

Pay attention to the "Under $1,000" tier. Time index: 3:27

I'd be looking towards field watches. Your criteria suit the style. Rather than suggest Hamilton and 'job done', I won't be prescriptive. But I think you could get a really, really nice field watch and it's going to suit a lot of real life scenarios, short of being really dressed up in a suit, or black tie.

@milkdoes nailed it!

Many good suggestions above already, Also any of the Seiko Alpinists from the New SPB line would work, just depends on your personal style tastes.

The Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic might work for you.

I’ve got the larger titanium version and love it but it comes in a 38mm case well under your budget.

I adore these, I'll look into them more. Thanks!

The Doxa Sub 200 on a beads of rice bracelet is a fantastic piece, with many dial variants to choose from.

Beautiful watch but a 42mm as a daily wearer is a bit too big for me

It could be the white dial that makes the Baby Snowflake so dressy. Maybe you need a black dial watch?

·

If you already have the baby Snowflake, rather get a dark dial for verastilty.

Seiko Presage Sharp Edge SPB203 or SPB169 (the green dial is quite a magic under the light)

The other equal option is the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic.

Image

The Seiko is 39mm with l2l at 47mm but wears smaller than that because of the angled case design and also 20mm lug width so you got lot of strap options. The Tissot is 40mm with 48mm l2l and wears true to its size, 21mm lug width. Both are almost the same thickness at 11mm. The bracelet on the Seiko is better, has a traditional clasp but only two micro-adjustments. The Tissot comes with center polished links and butterfly clasp which can be a preference, but you get half links for both models so you can get a good fit.

If you like micro-brands, the Farer Erebus II would be also a great option. 39.5mm case with short lug to lug and has a 68 hours LPJ movement, a good upgrade over all the SW-200 models most micro brands use.

I think it wears perfectly! The extra dial is a plus, imo. Here is mine on my 7.25in wrist

Hamilton Khaki Field (pick your poison). Mostly under 40mm, under $1,000, I think some are on bracelets. Full disclosure, I'm a big Hamilton FanBoy.

I love Hamilton’s as well. I’ve been looking into the Khaki Automatic 38mm with a silver dial which I find drop dead gorgeous. I’ve also been looking into the black dial one on the metal bracelet which may be more versatile. I’m torn, what do you think?

I have to vote black dial, just because I prefer darker dials, but their silver dials are da bomb, way nicer than white dials.

·

for me TWO daily beaters:

Hamilton Khaki titanium 38mm. Automatic+hacking+manual winding. no-date no nonsense.

Casio G-Shock... if its gone be nuclear war G-Shock+cockroaches probably survive it .

I was thinking about this one too. Just think about the fact that there will be some light reflection in the crystal, as the AR coating is not very effective. Deal breaker for me.

You’re right about the AR coating. I can live with it but if that’s important to you I can confirm that you might want to give it a miss.

Good luck.
