Tissot PRX quartz or Seiko 5 GMT?

This upcoming spring I will have completed a 2 year college degree. I still plan to continue my education, but I still want to buy something to celebrate the achievement.

Old Soviet watches make up the vast majority of my watch collection that has 20 watches now. I like them a lot, but to mark the occasion I want something a little nicer and I want to add more variety to my collection.

I’ve narrowed my purchase options down to the Tissot PRX Quartz and the Seiko 5 GMT. What provides the best value for the money?

Merry Christmas everyone!

Can’t speak for the Tissot. But I have the blue Seiko gmt… u Can get them on sale at macys or kohls for like $400. And the watches are amazing :

Seiko, without a shadow of a doubt. Get them both in hand if you are able, the difference is glaringly obvious.

The Tissot bracelet feels cheap and you're stuck with it unless prepared to pay for a custom strap. The Seiko bracelet isn't fantastic, but it's better than the Tissot and easy to swap

Then there's the movement. A tunable Seiko, or fixed powermatic 80 with plastic parts (look it up was big scandal at the time it came out ) that's essentially disposable.

Im not particularly biased, I don't like either watch myself.

Id go for a Seiko Alpinist GMT , and I'd buy used.

Cheers 🍻

First congrats on your academic achievements! The Tissot is a hot watch but I love the whole Seiko 5 GMT lineup! I just posted the orange one I got for Christmas today. My wife found on on Amazon for $280 and an additional 10% off.

·

I have both…I think the GMT is super versatile and it’s definitely one of my most worn watches…for me the watch became a favorite after I started wearing it on rubber straps and the nato it’s on currently

Also…I finally got a rubber strap for my PRX (stocking stuffer today) so we’ll see how that works out but still would go Seiko

Get the Seiko 5 GMT. The look is cool, fits in tons of different occasions (basically an everyday piece if you'd like). And you can get one new for $315 (and tax): https://mimosjewelry.com/products/ssk003-gmt?utm_source=shop_app&list_generator=link_to_storefront&context=product&user_id=60380525

The PRX is cool but it doesn't fit in as many occasions and I found the 40 is a bit too big and the 35 is way too small. Plus integrated bracelets are a bit less timeless than a GMT design-wise. Just my opinion.

·

For value seiko bc its an automatic gmt but ı would choose tissot for my love of the brand and its looks

·

The seiko 5 GMT without question!

·

I have the Seiko myself! I would say both Tissot and Seiko do make really great time pieces for the price. I personally could not get into the look of the Tissot that much since it did not fit my wrist very well.. The Seiko however has a classic look and molded to my wrist really well. That being the case I would recommend the Seiko

Image
·

Between those 2 choices, I'd take the automatic GMT on a non-integrated bracelet any day of the week!

·

Good luck with the qualification (well, not really luck but you know what I mean). Has to be the Seiko, surely?

How crazy, that is exactly where I bought my Seiko 5 GMT, and got a screaming deal on it on Black Friday. I agree with most, the Seiko is much more versatile, and it eats up all kinds of silicone and Nato straps, which means it's like several different watches for the price of one. I like the bracelet as well.

I also have a PRX, and bought the quite expensive integrated Silicone and Leather straps for it. I love that watch too, but I think the Seiko is the far better value, and is a blast to wear.

Oh and BTW congrats on finishing your degree! Either way you go with these watches you'll get lots of enjoyment out of either.

·

Thats a hard hard question for me at least as I'm usually Seiko through and through but since purchasing my PRX and with it even being the quartz edition it's a quality piece substantial weight comes with the bracelet and it makes me at least feel a million dollars when I wear it the Seiko you have here is wonderful too but feels different when wearing that's me that's me I wish you all the best in your journey and whatever choice you make it's the right one . Congratulations on your further education and remember question everything....

Seiko all day

I have both the PRX Auto and the Seiko5 GMT. I’d choose the Seiko5 everyday.

·

Seiko SSK003 was my gateway into “nicer” watches. I’d recommend it unless your style leans a bit more toward sporty/dress. I’m guessing the PRX is thinner and may slip under a cuff better, I’d that’s important to you.

If you want a watch that hits none of its indices, then take the Tissot. They really perfected their game in not hitting anything.

If you want a watch that actually has some use to it, which looks good and which is not seen around every corner, you should get the Seiko.

Pro-Tip: If you want the „best of both worlds“ (and here I mean the „dressy-divy“ look) you may as well check out the SRPE67 (or one of its similar versions)

Oh, and make a poll next time. It’s easier that way to pick the Seiko, given it’s long, >85% bar ;)

Let me play devil's advocate.

The GMT Is beautifull, but it weigth much more than a PRX (160 g if i rememember correctly) so is not the most confortable watch for a long day at work. Also you can buy a steeldive on AliExpress that essentially has better spec, lower price and the same movement so I would never buy a Seiko GMT.

The PRX is lightweight, the quartz require little to no upkeep, is elegant and the bracelet is very good. I think is a bit overpriced, but in Italy the secondsry market is flooded of PRX so you can buy a powermatic for the price of a quartz and the quartz for 200 euros.

In the end buy what gives you joy 💫🥂

·

I vote Tissot. A true affordable GADA 👌

·

Really love the look of the Seiko GMT. I think the colour scheme is just spot on, despite bearing similarities to a certain other iconic watch, it just works.

·

Go and try it on your wrist 1st, see how it goes. There's no logic in buying watches, its always emotion that make those final decision.

·

Need I say…

Personally if it was me I would go for one of these

Yeah I’ve been reading that a lot of people have been complaining about their PRX quartz watches missing the indices. For a Swiss made watch at that price point that’s just unacceptable to me. Definitely getting a Seiko.

·

Congrats on the upcoming degree! I own both (PRX mint green quartz and the 5 GMT exactly as pictured). The mint green has a textured dial which adds a dimension of class especially for the money. The Seiko 5 is a great piece for the money as well, Seiko put alot into this watch for the price point. I think the decision comes down to your personality. Casual everyday piece, Seiko 5 GMT. Want to class it up on a regular basis, PRX. Overall, I would pick the Quartz PRX in mint green if I could only pick one

·

I would humbly suggest that there is a better question to ask than "What provides the best value for the money?" Are you really going to sell the watch in a few years? It will, after all, commemorate an important occasion. Instead, ask yourself which watch you enjoy the most. No doubt you like both watches, as they're both fine timepieces. But you have to pick one right now. Here's a simple game: pretend that you know your birthday gift will be one of the two. Now visualize receiving the Tissot and imagine how that makes you feel. Are you more excited about the Tissot, or are you more disappointed about not getting the Seiko?

Congratulations on the accomplishment!

·

I’m not a huge fan of integrated bracelets so the choice is easy for me, but from a more practical standpoint, look at how much more you’re getting out of the Seiko: automatic movement, extra complication, and a watch that visually, is just way more interesting. People hardly ever notice which watch I’m wearing or anything g about my watches, but on the rare occasions when my watch does get a random comment, it’s always my Seiko GMT.

·

Definitely the Seiko 5 GMT!

Not an issue for every watch. Also the quartz cost half of the money and has less upkeep cost, but is less romantic...

I went with Seiko 5 for a stater my wife surprised me with this one it’s my first automatic. Love it fits perfectly on the wrist.
