Just for fun. The SBGH273 and the SBGY011 with moon phase complications. Kinda works on these two references I think.
I really wish Grand Seiko step up in 2023 to this challenge. GS play hard to the "Nature of Time" and a moon phase complication would slide right into that concept.
Would you buy a GS with a moon phase complication?

I have to admit that the moon phase works really well for me on the blue dial watch. Ordinarily, I'm not a fan of that complication. It often makes the dial look unnecessarily cluttered for my taste (the same thing with a power reserve indicator). Also, I ask myself if I'm going to want to take the time to properly set up such a complication each time I wear a watch and what's the added cost to a service with that particular complication.
Ignoring price and my general disdain for the GS jumbo proportions, of course I would! They need to put the good bric-a-brac on their dials.

Jumbo proportions? The SBGY011 with the Spring Drive movement is just 10,5mm in height.

Added service cost is of course a relevant parameter. The "hassle" in adjusting the moon phase can be looked upon as an added interaction bonus - or just the opposite; pure hassle. A manual wind watch (e.g. SGBY011) and a moon phase complication will add to the romantic manual interaction with the watch. However, I understand everybody do not feel the same way - and that is why other people buy other watches and the variation in this hobby is as it should be.
Perfect in this case. Nicely rendered.

I'm not giving into this idea that 40mm is a normal size for a normal watch.

That all depends on what is a normal wrist...
I've been wanting GS to do a moonphase for a longtime and those concept designs are absolutely killer. The second one is very reminiscent of the JLC Master Control Ultra Thin Moonphase
A GS moon phase would get my money.
100% especially with a blue dial which seems to be the best color for a moon phase. But they need to release all these higher end automatics in 38mm before they work on higher complications. All their more interesting watches are 40mm+ and 13mm+ thick. Get those two things under control then work on higher complications.
I'm doing my very best to stifle my inner 12 year old.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills because everybody loves 36mm watches but nobody ever points out that Grand Seiko hardly focuses on smaller watches. Heck, even the thickness leaves a lot to be desired. 34-37mm diameter, <12mm thickness, automatic spring drive with a textured dial? It may never happen, but that’s a dream. Only their quartz and hand-wound options are even close to that. Love my 37mm SBGX261 as an everyday piece, though. Nice and slim at 10mm.
Considering seiko's previous attempts at a moonphase with a spring drive, I guess they do know how to make it it work... hopefully it will look cleaner.... I keep thinking fry pan stir fry everytime I look at this watch...
The white dial render looks great
My question was a trap, because there is no such thing as a normal wrist - as they come in all shapes and sizes. Perception comes into play as well as pure measurements. Here is a video from a HSNY lecture with Mark Cho. Many have probably seen the highligst from that lecture, but it is educational to watch the whole thing (1+ hour).
