Naming Days of the Week & Watch Posts

Recently, one of our members asked a great question. I had posted a #WRUW shot, and I named the post. It was a Thursday, and I was posting a Titanium...

There is a saying I heard in database design once, but I can’t see to locate the source now. Nevertheless, it goes like this:

No matter the storage capacity of a data container - you will fill it.

I’ve found this to be true of filing cabinets, trash cans, databases, hard drives, closets, and even watch boxes, among many other containers. Your question is your answer. The fact that you are proposing the question tells us that you are entertaining getting another watch to fill that spot.

I would recommend caution and patience. When we see that slot in the watch case, we perceive it as an “empty slot.” If I were you, knowing what I know today, I would say, fine something to put in that slot that is not a watch, and then wait for the right time to buy the watch you really want, and then put it in that spot. Just don’t go trying to fill it arbitrarily.

But, that’s just my .02.

So… with close to 60 watches in my collection, I adjusted only the one I am wearing today. I treat the rest like manual wind watches, because functionally speaking, they may as well be. That even includes my quartz watches without auto DST, like the Hamilton PSR. I just can’t justify chasing down that many watches for accuracy. But… YMMV.

If I'm dead, I won't know what anyone does with them. Eventually, I'll probably give a select few to any family members while I'm alive, and who would appreciate them. For the rest, maybe I'll sell them and put the money in some sort of trust. Of course, this assumes that I don't drop dead in the interim, in which case, see point 1.

I love the white dial. It is very versatile. I like that I can pair it with almost anything. The blue color way is the classic, bit I have so much blue in my collection. The black is a great versatile option, too, but A. I already have a sub with a black dial, and B. It's not as versatile as white. I do like the green, but A. It's harder to get, and B. Once again, not quite as versatile (at least with my wardrobe. So... I chose white. YMMV, but I think white is a fantastic option for many use-cases.

I don't see anything wrong with your assessment as general guidance. Personally, I just think of it in terms of likelihood. So, it's a risk management exercise. "If I'm wearing this watch, will it survive whatever I plan on doing while wearing it?" I don't think that's a terribly difficult consideration to make. I'm not going to a water park with a pocket watch, for instance. Like I said, this guidance is pretty decent as an averaged out way to think about it. Gospel? Probably not, but close enough to help you think about whether the watch you have on will survive your specific use case.

Easy. Just walk into your local Rolex AD and pick up an Explorer. 😂
