Watch to commemorate the birth of my first son!!

Hello! I’m new here, nice to meet you all!

I wanted to know you opinion and options: in a few month I’m going to be father for the first time, and I wanted to buy a watch to always remember the event and maybe give the watch to my son when he is 18 or at his wedding (almost in no time 🤣). My budget is max. 1.000€… I’ve been thinking about Baltic MR01 or the Unimatic 36mm (Massena LAB), but any suggestion about this options or others is more than welcome!!!

FYI: i like <40mm watches and my collection already has: Grand Seiko Shunbun, Omega Speedmaster Reduced, Mido Ocean Star Decompression Limited, Seiko SNK803K2, Longines Classic Quatz, G-Shock and a bunch of Swatches.

Thank you all!!! Looking forward to reading you!!!!

If you really want something to hand down, for any situation……Something in a military type watch……. Marathon, Sangin Instruments. You can also get a Benrus type I or two re-issue in that price range and it’s an icon. Probably one of the most copied/imitated field designs there is.

Christopher Ward has you covered 😎

·

Wow that’s fantastic news mate, enjoy it and all the best!

I personally wouldn’t look at a microbrand since, due to the fact that you want to pass it over in 18+ years, it should be very reliable and long lasting. I would go for a Longines, Mido, Hamilton option. As a microbrand probably I would agree with a Christopher Ward.

·

I think this look does not get old and looks sporty and dressy.

For that budget I’d recommend browsing https://www.traskawatch.com/ I don’t have a model yet, but they are highly regarded by others.

I just bought the Baltic Hermétique, and can personally recommend the brand ✌️

·

First, congrats! Second, awesome collection. Third, maybe look at Nivada Grenchen.

·

I agree with those above. Although Baltic makes a great watch I would buy a legacy brand, and one under a strong corporate umbrella. Hamilton, Longines would be my choice.

·

Congrats first!

Buy from a more established brand that maybe you can assure the ability to service in the future. I wish those Micros the best, but no guarantee they’ll be here in the future.

Don’t be scared of pre owned. Surely new you can find a noce Hamilton, Seiko Presage, Diver/Prospex, or a cocktail time….

·

I'd go for a Squale Militaire, or something in that sort of direction.

Legacy out the wazoo. Great watch.

·

The Unimatic is a tank. It should survive. The movement isn’t anything complicated and can be easily serviced by a local watchmaker.

There's always a Lorier plus an engraving.

Ok, I don't want to sound like a bad person here, I really don't I promise. But this is a really big moment in your life, massive in fact. So is there a possibility of selling some of the wonderful watches you already own to increase the budget to get that 'one' watch which will do the occasion the honour it deserves and get a beautiful watch to pass down at the same time? There is a chance too I guess, that If you're wearing lots of different watches all the time anyway your son will probably never associate and appreciate a particular one to you. My dad wore the same beat up ugly old watch for decades but I cherish it dearly. Not that you can't get a lovely watch for 1000, I'm just saying it might give you more appropriate options. One of my favourite watches is a £70 G-Shock, just so you know I'm coming from a good place. Personally, and if I could rewind time I would get a Snowflake or a watch that represented the time of year, season, or a colour that was meaningful. All the best and congrats.

·

Welcome to the family and congratulations on baby to be first thing is 1000 buck ain't gonna get a patek but thee are plenty of watch makers out there that will have exactly what you want good luck on your quest maybe think Seiko Tissot or a micro brand .

·

I’d say a Hamilton khaki Murph 38 would look stunning now and in the future. You can even get a bracelet for it off uncle straps. Congratulations on the baby to be born!!!

·

Why not wear a watch that’s currently in the collection during birth, pass it to him when he’s 18. Tell him it was there during his birth.

·

It needs to be something timeless imo - you want it to have aged well in 18 yrs.

Nothing more timeless in the $1K range than a re-issued Seiko diver.

Seiko or not, diver or not, I'd go with a re-issue (or something in that style). If it still flys after 50 years another 18 won't hurt it!

Congrats btw.

·

My son turned fifty last year (I have no idea how that happened LOL) but when he was born I purchased a gold Omega and I never wore it alot but when he graduated grad school I gave it to him. Being it is a birth year watch and was mine he loves it. JMO Congrats on the new addition to the family...

·

·

Congratulations on the news!

How about trying a certina Ds Action Diver 38mm. I think it's a good watch with a decent history and specs for the price and would be appropriate to pass on to your son.Congratulations again 🎉

·

·

Welcome! AND we're excited for the birth of your son~

WRUW when the doctor pulls the baby out.

Great idea.

Why didn't I think of that before?

Now I need to make a 3rd child.

·

Longines !

·

I wouldn't overthink it. Just visit your closest AD and whatever watch makes you think of your son will be the one.

·

Congrat! And, welcome!

Like many others have said, I would stick with a legacy brand like Seiko, Hamilton etc. Only because microbrands are such an unknown and some of them can go belly-up for any reason and taint the piece. But it looks like you have some pieces already eligible to pass down. But if you want something special it has to be a piece that means something to you. I can't make that call, but good luck! Bless you and your newborn friend.

·

Congratulations mate!!! Enjoy it.

Go with a nice SEIKO,something not to big, engrave it and enjoy it.

·

Congrats! If you are thinking of passing it down - which your son might also want do - I would probably stick to one of the more established brands that will more than likely be around for decades to come (and where servicing won't be such a hassle).

·

Great idea, I bought a Farer when my son was born 6 months ago and had his name engraved on it 👍🏽

·

I love unimaric, their style is just timeless

Congratulations! I became a dad for the first time 2 years ago, and kinda wish I’d bought a watch to mark the occasion. In fact, I actually did the opposite, I sold a watch and used the money to fund a watch I gifted to my brother (his 50th birthday) and a ring I bought for my wife (to celebrate the birth). But if I were to have bought a watch, I’d go with something classic, something that will (hopefully) stand the test of time both in terms of design and weathering the decades. To that end, it’s worth thinking about the bullet proof movements like ETA, Selita, and Omega.

Clearly you already have an Omega, so wearing that at the birth would be a great option.

But assuming you want to buy a new piece, then Hamilton use ETA based movements (Khaki Field Murph would be a top pick). Christopher Ward use Selita (in the main) and have some classic looking options for a bit over $1000 (take a look at the C63 and C65 models). Oris is slightly more expensive, but you can often find discounts, and the more affordable options are Selita-based. My preference is the Big Crown Pointer date or Diver 65.

Good luck in the search for a watch and in becoming a Dad.
