My Weird CW Pet Peeve

I have absolutely nothing against CW as a brand, in fact I've been eyeing a blue dialed Dune for a while now. My gripe is not with the watches themselves, but rather the name. Yes, I realize this is a true bottom-of-the-barrel pet peeve, but to me "Christopher Ward" sounds like a generic fashion brand, think (prepared for hate) Daniel Wellington. Obviously there's nothing they can do fix this, just curious if others feel similarly. Feel free to tell me I'm crazy

At least it isn't Chris Ward, and it apparently is a real name. Need I name the couple of other brands that are fictitious names, and shortened versions to boot?

But yeah, one wonders if Christopher is related to Montgomery.

·

Yeah not the best name and accordingly not the best branding over the years.

they have cracked the branding now and it’s too late to change the name. They are actually smashing it. But if they could go back in time I think a better choice could have been made..

·

It doesn't seem any different than other accepted brands with names on the dial, like Patek Philipe, Audemars Piguet, A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Frederique Constant, Breitling, Hamilton, Bulova, etc. If it's a good watch and a good value, I'm okay with it. Especially with the new Christopher Ward logo instead of the name.

·

I don't dislike the name at all, it's the name of a co-founder of the brand.

Agreed. I particularly like the shadow logo they’ve incorporated recently. Nice touch.

·

I own two Shinolas and they’re great. But talk about a sh#tty name to select for your brand.

·

Well, at least it ain't as fake sounding as Daniel Wellington and their so called reason for using that name

·

I like Christopher Ward, I have had a few over the years, and I still have two. I think they are a good brand and great watches, although their prices are not what they were. My issue is the name also, as well as the logo that has changed several times. Its just not my cup of tea, but it would not stop me buying one though, just not quite right.

·

At least it isn't Joey Ward. I mean . . . I kind of get it. It's great that they started to veer toward the logo more vs. putting the name on the watches. But, at the same time, people probably might have had similar feelings (or just thought the name sounded weird or something) about literally ANY watch brand at some pt or another . . . until those watch brands started getting older . . . and with time you kind of just stop questioning it.

I’m old enough to get that reference. Bought too many electronics at Monty Ward 😂

·

I pretty much agree. Why didn’t they just go with Ward? Sounds better to me. Simple.

·

Also can’t abbreviate it to CW as that a basic TV station in the US…showing bad young adult/millennial drama and campy DC Arrowverse shows. All filmed on location in Canada.

·

I’ve never thought about. But isn’t CW a name of a teenage TV network?

Ahhhh! Didn't even think of that, actively avoided that channel my entire life 😂

·

I like the name and I love the new logo

Is it because it’s an English name?

I wonder if it sounds weird to non English speakers.

Also do Polish/French people have the same problem with Patek Philippe? Or Germans with A. Lange….

ALS is different, because the "und Söhne* part indicates a long running family business, as opposed to a fashion designer with a big ego. This is not fundamentally different from using "and sons" in English, except that it is more common to do that in Germany with company names. There is also Dornblüth & Sohn, though "Kronen und Söhne" and "Specht und Sohne" are Chinese brands which fake German heritage.

I am usually not too fussed about brand names, within reason. I have read people complaining about Berny, Phyllida, SanMartin, even Steeldive, and I'm ok with those. Not any worse than Tudor (no connection to that dynasty whatsover) or Rolex (meaningless, not even an acronym), in my opinion. Seestern is fine for a brand specialising in divers, but Reef Tiger is a bit silly.

I recall the mad watch collector complain about Skmei, apparently unaware that it is a transliteration from the Chinese brand name where it means something like "beautiful moment in time".

·

Possibly because it’s a person’s name in English and not in French or German?

Also it it’s English but not a person’s name it sounds better.

·

I feel the same way. Perhaps change their name to "Ward 69". Then I will consider it

·

Oh my goodness thank you for bringing this up! I really dig the brand but my problem with it is I know a complete jerk named Ward so I just can’t see myself buying one.

·

I use to think that until I purchased one, now I don't care, the watches are amazing. The value for money is insanely awesome and now I am worried most other brands are going to disappoint. Christopher Ward and Muhle Glashutte are in the same value god tier. Own two of both and they make other watches seem grossly overvalued. That discounted to $995 Limited Edition Aeroport from Muhle was too good to pass up. Constantly grab that watch in the morning.

I will stand up for my friend Berny. A few months ago I bought a Berny 2678M Swiss Railway style watch for $18. It looks a lot like a Mondaine, except it's a better watch in almost every way than the actual $125 Mondaine I used to have.

Getting ready to buy the Berny with the ST2130. Can’t help it with the branding. 😏

·

I don't gel with having some guy's name splashed across whatever. Is it about the watch or Mr Ward? Come to think of it, I don't possess a single item of clothing with a corporate logo, including shoes.

Also, CW reminds of DW every time.

·

They should bite the bullet and hire a brand agency to start from scratch. The watches deserve it, the branding is terrible imo.

Also, I don't think the namesake is even involved anymore.

Thank you for that. {I really like the MWC and his show. A lot of these watch channels try way too hard to be funny, but he really is just a naturally funny guy. It seems like in every episode there's that scene where he's going through the airport(?) in fast motion, and also he'll pop up one time per show in the middle of his review and for no reason will say "Hello" in a sped-up little girl's voice. I tell myself, I know it's coming - I will not laugh, I will not laugh, and then he does it and I laugh hysterically every time.} At least Skmei has an actual meaning. I think Seiko is close to that, though sometimes I think the literal translation for Seiko is: "All we care about is cranking out as many watch ranges as we possibly can with as many models in each range as we can possibly build without any advance notice, promotion, cataloging, or advertising of any kind, leaving you the buyer to sort it all out."

But that wouldn't fit on the dial, so they just put on SEIKO.

Maybe you can give us a full report?

·
samdeatton

Maybe you can give us a full report?

Sure. I have decided to go with the black and gilt colored one since the BERNY isn’t so legible🤣still though, great build and movement, especially for us enthusiasts.

·

Thanks so much. Except for its garbage strap, which cracked in the first week, mine is great and was $18!!!

Your auto is still a good deal and they do seem to have solid build quality.

·

Christophe Garde. Any better?

I think the name is fine, but I'm glad that they're going to the twin flags logo. I like this logo a lot. I want a Dune and the new C60 Atoll. They make beautiful watches.
