SOS from Small Wristers (Part 1): Looking for a GMT

I'd like to have a GMT timepiece to keep track of my son's European time zone, and family members living in the US. My left/watch wrist is 6.25 inches, 50mm top-view edge to edge.

Sadly, it's really been difficult finding a GMT watch with dimensions that won't look like a water meter on my wrist when worn.

Image

If I will be allowed by my fellow small wristers to speak on their behalf, I'd like to say that this is our reality. Most GMTs out there have case dimensions and designs more suited to people with medium or large wrists.

Image

*Graphic c/o Brock of The Slender Wrist.

Adding to this dilemma, my current budget is in the affordable range of $200-500. So far, the search has been quite frustrating...

Image

When assessing potential options, I always use these criteria as a guide:

1) Versatile and Adaptable for a broad spectrum of occasions (work, socials, leisure), and can be dressed up or down with various kinds of bracelets and straps to fit the setting or situation.

Image
Image
Image

2) Comfortable: Suitable case size within this sweet spot of dimensions-- Diameter of 34-38mm, LTL of 40-45mm. I'm sure many of my fellow small wristers will agree. Plus, best if it's lightweight enough to wear 24/7, i.e. I won't develop carpal tunnel, scoliosis, or a unnatural limp while walking due to the sheer weight of the watch.

Image
Image
Image

3) Robust: a) Reliable movement; b) Sound case made of material that’s able to hold its own in variable conditions (Titanium + anti-magnetic case is a nice to have); c) I'm not so concerned about WR rating, but the higher, the better.

Image

4) Beautiful Design: a) Understated, unassuming, doesn’t call attention to itself; b) Intuitive, legible in one glance; c) Good craftsmanship and finishing; d) Dial - good use of white space, symmetrical, some sheen or texture (stepped/ sandwich dials a plus), proportionate sized markers/indices/numerals (dot hour indices are least preferred).

Image
Image
Image

I don’t like noisy, complicated dials that cram too much info or try to do so many things that affect legibility (e.g. too much text, chronographs, many digital watches).

5) X-Factor: Why does this watch speak to me? Why does this watch captivate me? Why does it make me “sigh” in awe whenever I look at it? What gives this watch an edge over the others? Is the design one that I’d never be bored of? Am I constantly drawn or hooked by the looks of the watch? If I develop some doubts about a watch, and still have them after some time, I move on.

6) Price range, as mentioned, should be within $200-500. Edit: If the watch is really compelling because it really hits all the criteria above, I'm open to weigh the increased cost vs. the increased benefit.

Running the various GMT brands and models out there through these criteria, the list I've made is frustratingly short...

Timefactors Speedbird PRS22 GMTQ (36mm | 42.5mm | 11.6mm | 18mm). It meets the Versatile/Adaptable, Comfortable, Robust, and Price (£235.00or $311) criteria, but is so-so or just ok in Beauty and X-Factor.

Image
Image
Image
Image

The Traska Venturer (38.5mm | 46mm | 11.5mm | 20mm) meets the Versatile, Adaptable, Beautiful, Robust, and X-Factor criteria.

Image
Image
Image
Image

However, it's case dimensions are a tad out of the sweet spot, but may be negligible. Trying it out on wrist is the only way to know for sure, which is hard to do online. Lastly, its $695 price tag is out of range.

Finally, the Farer Lander IV GMT 36mm checks all the criteria.

Image
Image
Image
Image

This piece has been living rent free in my mind, as I commented on @TheSharperTheBetter's post.

I'd get it in a heartbeat... if not for its £1,225 or $1,542 Price tag. I'd rather spend that money traveling to a bucket list place(s) on this earth with my son, and creating invaluable shared memories with him. That is more precious and priceless to me.

I've seen the various Q Timex GMTs, and Boldr GMTs. However, they fail in the criteria of Versatile/ Adaptable, Beautiful Design and X-Factor.

This then, is an SOS call to all my fellow Crunchers, from all of us small wristers. Please help us find suitable GMT options.

Image

Thank you in advance, for coming to our aid.🤝 We are already greatly grateful.

Fellow small wrister here, thanks for the in-depth post about your search. I've got a couple of Casio's that help me with my "GMT needs", but at some point would like a small affordable GMT, so I am also interested in the responses you receive here.

Yep, hopefully this will be a helpful repository of GMT recommendations from the WC community to us small wristers. Crossing my fingers. 😉

Its a personal choice of course but I like the

CITIZEN ATTESA CB1120-50E

Image

It seems to have a great spec, sapphire, solar, titanium, radio signal accuracy and is 38mm. Its JDM (I think) but ordered JDM before and got delivery in 5 days. Lots of JDM sites I saw this on Sakura. Style wise sporty but has that all social occasions feeling. The only negative (not for me though) is the integrated strap if you like to change. Also if you want GMT at a glance, this will be a button press. I saw it for $289 USD.

·

As a small wristed fellow myself i am also really interested in the outcome of this search 😁👍

You could look at the Seiko 5 GMTs as they are fairly cheap and i've only heard nice things about them. It's a 42mm case but the L2L is only 46mm which i have as my max L2L for my 6.1 inch wrist. A watch of that size is a little big on my wrist, but it looks alright in my opinion.

My Phoibos Voyager gmt might fit. Slightly large diameter at 39mm but a lug to lug of 45mm which is within parameters.

Image

Image

Image

It comes in few different colour variations if the red is bit loud. It is a diver with 200m of water resistance, a bi-directional bezel and even if the thickness is 13.5mm some of that is the caseback that sinks down a bit.

·

Check out the Nodus Sector GMT which is back in stock later this summer. 38mm (47 mm lug).

Glycine Airman GMT at Ashford (gray market dealer I believe) for under $300.

Thanks for the good suggestion, mate.🍻 The sapphire, solar, titanium and radio signal accuracy specs are a compelling draw. Will have to check out how it tells the GMT time with a button press. And yes, the integrated bracelet is a limitation. What's the LTL?

6”2 is small??? I’m 5”9 🤣🤣

Thanks for the suggestion, ven. The new Seiko5 GMTs are definitely a game changer. For sure, many microbrands will begin using the movement in the future. I tried the Seiko5 GMTs in an AD a few months back, and the staffer I spoke to was the one who coined the term "looks like a water meter on your wrist". My wrist and near forearm are almost the same measurement, so it did look like a water meter on my wrist.

Thanks for the recom, en vän. I appreciate your insights from wearing it. I looked at the Phoibos Voyager before. I remember they had a red and blue variant. Will take a look at them again. 👍

·

My wrist is slightly bigger at 6.5” and the Seiko5 GMT feels great. Suggest trying it on to see for yourself. Plenty of pics in my gallery of me wearing it.

·

There: Can track up to 5 different time zones, isn't overly large and won't cost an arm and a leg. Problem solved.

Thanks for the suggestions, bud. Will take a look at the overall look of the Nodus with its 47mm LTL. The link to the Airman shows a current sale price of $219. ✔ Will review the info there including its overall look, and will estimate its LTL.

Thanks for the recom, bud. A G-Shock certainly is a workhorse. Unfortunately, I'm not into digital displays. I prefer the analog design, as it is more intuitive for me to read time with hands.

My first thought on this is the Lorca Model No.1 GMT (36mm) might fit the criteria except for the price (US$1750) - but here are spec/details anyway. Comes in a black or what I call a matt silver dial.

I would second this option if budget can be flexed. I made the purchase and now waiting patiently for it to arrive 😁. I too, have a small wrist problem when looking for a GMT option. I have a Q Timex GMT which is great but wanted a non quartz andhigher WR so ended up with either lorca or airman.. the lorca just looks much better in my opinion.

I have a small wrist (around 6") and have also been interested in finding a smaller GMT watch. I also pre-ordered the Lorca Model No. 1 GMT, which looks great online but no one has actually seen or tried it out in the metal yet (unless you're Gary Shteyngart or someone else with early access to one). I'm hopeful the Lorca will work out, although the new Farer Lander 36mm GMT looks really appealing too.

I agree that if the budget were higher, Lorca and Farer are the best options size-wise. If the budget needs to be below $500, Glycine, Nodus, or the Seiko GMTs might work if you're willing to go a little bigger (although I haven't tried any of these out either).

·

Has anyone mentioned the Nodus Sector GMT yet?

Image
Image
·

Lorier hyperion will fit you like a glove. Shown here on a 6in wrist. Half the price of the lander; which is a beautiful watch as well!

Image
·

Honestly, I would simply use an app on my phone. You can track multiple time zone at no cost. And since you would look at the phone to call your son anyways. And that would leave extra dollars to buy another watch ;-).

·

Just get the Lander and pass it on to your son one day.

·

Wow! Thank you very much WC fam, for wracking your brains to recommend GMT timepieces that will fit the criteria.

It may have been a bit of mental calisthenics for some. Nonetheless, your suggestions have been truly hearty, wise, and cool. 😎 Those of us who are #smallwristers are indeed grateful. 🤝

I haven't checked out any of these yet if they fit the criteria. But we #smallwristers have our work cut out.

Should you encounter any more GMT options that fit the criteria mentioned, and aren't yet on these 2 lists, please share them here. We'd greatly appreciate it.

Again, thank you very much mates! 🍻

Hi Hakki! Another watch to consider would be the Nezumi Aviera. The watch should come out in the next month or so, it’s Swedish design and Germany made with I believe a Miyota and/or a Seiko movement. Also going to come in under $500. Could be promising…40mm if memory serves correct. Hope this helps.

Image
·

You should work on increasing your wrist size. Please don't tell us how you do it. Good luck and try not to go blind.

Hahaha... I won't tell. 😜 I did have the same thought the other day. But, genetics may be slightly against me. Let's see.

Hope I’m not too late… I totally agree with them. However, if you are on a tight budget you should check out the Seiko 5 GMT Automatic.
