I bought a Cartier for my wife a few years ago. She wears it all the time and really loves it, but couldn’t care less about watches generally. One day someone noticed her watch and said “nice Tank,” and she thought she was being complimented on her shirt.
That used to be the case, but is no longer true in all cases (at least for the US, anyway). It depends on the movement and complication, if any. Generally, the more complicated, the more likely it would be need to be serviced in Japan. Otherwise, it’s serviced in the New Jersey Seiko service center for the US. They’ve apparently staffed up for spring drive servicing in NJ in recent years.
I used to live in HK in the mid-2010’s, and the Armoury (in both the Landmark and the Pedder buildings) was one of my favorite stores to shop. It was also a great place to check out a lot of GS watches in the metal, in the days before the brand really began their push to expand internationally. Highly recommend a visit for any of you who are passing through or are based in HK.
I usually wear the same “GADA” watch for an entire work week (Monday to Friday), and then switch to a sports watch for the weekend. And then the following Monday, I wear a different GADA watch for the entire work week, then a different sports watch the next weekend.
I want to limit myself to no more than 5 watches—if I buy another one, I have to get rid of one. I like to wear my watches often and know them well, so any more than 5 would make that goal harder.
Also, I like to think that whatever I have, I’ll keep for a long time, so maintenance costs are also a factor. Given how pricey it can be to service a watch, I find the idea of owning a lot of them to be pretty impractical.
