The Probably Hardest Decision...

All are ultra-classic to me, but I am so torn between them.

I adore the compact dimensions of the "large" Cartier Tank Must model on the right, and could easily rotate this one between my wife and me, but it's a quartz watch. Meanwhile, the Tank on the left is automatic, yet it appears too bulky for being such a classic and elegant dress watch. My heart leans towards the horological excellence of the JLC, but it lacks widespread brand recognition beyond the watch enthusiasts' realm and comes at double the cost. This is a really tough one... Any suggestions?

I’m a fan of the JLC. That’s me though, go with what you lean towards the most.

When you get to the most expensive of watches, outside of Rolex, no one else is going to know what you’re wearing except for watch enthusiasts.

“Your heart leans towards the Horological excellence of the JLC..”

So get the JLC!

I have never warmed to the Reverso despite the heritage. I can't say why? It's perhaps my subconscious bias at play given the link to Polo, a sport very much from the realms of colonialism & elitism. Whatever the reason, it doesn't excite me.

The Tank is the quintessential example of style & class in a dress watch. A simple design, beautifully executed that conveys a level of sophistication in the wearer. My choice would be the quartz as I really don't feel the need for a date window in this watch, it's not an every day wearer. I also believe the slimmer the better where this watch is concerned.

·

I don’t have either but I have tried both. JLC for the win.

·

So what's wrong with quartz? Get the watch in large. The XL will just be too big and a date window has absolutely no business on a tank.

·

If you're concerned with brand recognition just get a Rolex like everyone else.

·

I wouldn't overly discount quartz. Worth remembering that they are the accurate one. If you like the watch, get the watch. There are more to watch than just the movement. Especially at that brand and level. Even the mechanical movement wouldn't be the kind of dedicated, artistic, crafty goodness of, says, JLC or independent watchmakers.

Second, it's also worth thinking why you buy it to justify it.

Personally, I prefer a brand with smaller recognition than an overly popular brand (one reason I dislike Rolex). For some people, it's about personal enjoyment, for that moment you sit around staring at the perfectly brushed case, or that little but delightful design, or the interactions between metals and light.

Some people like to invest in something that holds value (read: widely recognized brands and styles). For that, a signature design of a well regarded brand would do well.

So if you need to match a certain style, a thin quartz from a widely admired brand is exactly right. Quartz is both thinner, lighter, more accurate, and more resilient. Also you don't need to wind it frequently. Don't discount quartz.

On the other hand, if you want to be "in the know," maybe a bit more mysterious of a brand with impeccable skill is a better choice (worth noting that JLC is far from being unknown).

Your money.

But do share wrist shot when you decide 😄. That's why I am here

·

JLC for me. Nice styling.

·

Reverso honestly does nothing for me, but Cartier 😍

My Mrs has a quartz Cartier so that's my recommendation. Obvious choice from those

·

The Reverso 1000%

·

JLC for me. ❤️

·

If you care what people outside the watch realm think, then go Cartier.

One thing to consider, Cartier and JLC are in different league. JLC is among the top-tier high end brands while Cartier is mid to lower-tier. Apart from the number of sales, since Cartier is cheaper, JLC wins in every aspect.

I'd choose the JLC every time.

·

This is really a tough choice. Each watch has unique strengths and all are total enduring classics.

·

JLC to me… I’ll avoid quartz just for snobbery, beside I love the seconds hand so I appreciate the sweeping of it on mechanical ⚙️

·

I own the XL because I just couldn’t justify the price of the large being a quartz watch. I love it and get compliments every time I wear it.

·

JLC or Cartier....can't go wrong

·

The Tank Must XL is too big for me. Got the Tank Must L for my wife, fits her perfectly. Bonus, it fits my 6.75 inch wrist perfectly too.

Yes it’s a quartz, but who cares. The Tank Must has been quartz since it was first released back in 1977, and remains true to the first Tank from 1917. If you want a mechanical in the same size you’ll have to go with the Tank Louis Cartier in yellow gold…an a much heftier price tag.

The Reverso never seems to sit right on my wrist. Id love to own one but I wouldn’t wear it. Everyone is different so give it a try and see how you feel.

Among Cartier, I love the Tank Américaine. I feel like it’s the most under appreciated model in their lineup. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I have the medium but I really do suggest looking at the large. The medium is really, really dainty.

Reverso is a no brainer. Reverso is like a 10/10, Tank is like 0/10

·

I wouldn’t worry about brand recognition. Go with your gut

·

You’ve got to look at them on your wrist. How they look and how they feel. I have a Solarbeat Tank large and a JLC Reverso. On me, the Tank feels great. The JLC would too if the strap stitching didn’t irritate me.

·

I had this VERY same issue, and my solution was buying the Tank XL first. The dial has a beautiful detailing and the automatic movement made that the pick for me.

Then a year later I bought the JLC Reverso, but I picked up the Tribute Duo with the blue dial and white dial reverse side.

·

Also as a heads up, both brands are owned by the same company (Richemont).

·

JLC all the way! I wear a JLC everyday to work. The dementions, movment, design and under the radar rep make it my dream watch. Try one on!

Let me add a spanner in the works. My favourite carrier, the Santos Dumont XL.

The jlc is a step beyond brand recognition. It’s timeless and made for those who know. It’s not made to impress others. It’s for impressing you

I loved mine while I had it it was such an awesome bit of engineering
