Should a GADA watch be inexpensive?

Is affordability a consideration in your definition of a Go anywhere, do anything Watch? This is obviously very subjective, but what do you think?

There is no "should" when it comes to this sort of thing. Do what makes sense for your situation and buy what you enjoy.

Not to be that guy… but someone’s “inexpensive” would not necessarily be inexpensive for me.

I know. I meant for you.

GADA watches can be any price.

Expensive or inexpensive is a relative term.

Someone's beater is another's Grail.

I think if you're buying a true GADA, it should likely be as nice/expensive as you are willing to damage/lose. Otherwise it's a dress-casual watch you wear as a GSDSSIIWGS(Go Somplaces, Do Somethings, Sometimes, If It Won't Get Scratched).

For every person that price point will differ, but everybody has a price point that reflects an actual GADA. For some it's an F-91W, for others it's an Aquanaut. The key point is, if you're not willing to wear it "anywhere" or doing "anything" (within reason), it's not actually a GADA.

I.e. If you won't/don't wear you GADA for things like camping, swimming, hiking, vacationing, etc., it's not a GADA.

Folks… I realize that this is different for everybody, which is why the Poll is asking whether YOU consider affordability as a factor when choosing a GADA… Sorry if this wasn’t clear.

·

For me it has to be the BEST GADA I can buy since I’m a minimalist with my collection

·

Price shouldn’t define any category of watch. It should be defined by relevant complications and build.

·

If a watch is expensive then one is less likely to GADA with it.

A true GADA watch should be priced where you could emotionally stomach damaging it.

This is exactly what I have been thinking about.

IMO in order for a watch to “go anywhere” and “do anything” that opens it up to either theft or damage.

For me I limit my choices to those I could lose and not be too worried about their loss.

For example, if I were going to be walking downtown at night, I would leave my Datejust at home and wear one of my San Martins.

Loss of the Rolex would really hurt. It’s immediate replacement would be in doubt. The San Martin in the other hand would be replaced in days.

GADA is a watch you don't have to worry about destroying or you have to leave off the "anything"

·

I see GADA and Beater as two different things. So my GADA won't really be a GADA. It would be a nearly GADA.

Exactly this! We say "go anywhere do anything" but the truth is that a GADA watch is an individual thing. We have different occupations, different hobbies, different outdoor activities, really just different lives. Who is really going to go anywhere or do anything? We all have our predilections and our routines, so really, a GADA watch only has a limited subset of all the potential human activities for which it needs to be suitable, and this will vary from person to person.

That's a good distinction, actually!

Why would it have to be? Damage? If a watch is "in the way" and at high risk to be damaged I will take it off even if it came out of a happy meal...

·

Can we stop saying GADA yet? 😅

We gada stop saying it altogether!

For me it means except for the most extreme cases, I can wear it, therefore it not just has to look versatile, but has to be affordable and quartz
