Best Watch Design of All Time?

I understand that all art is subjective, and beauty is really in the eye of the beholder. But let’s pretend that didn’t exist.

Which watch brand do YOU think has the best designs of all time?

What watch models (any brand) do YOU consider to be a ‘perfect’ design?

Doesn’t matter if the movement or internals of the watch are absolute garbage. Power reserve? Beatrate? Don’t care. I want to know what watches you think are aesthetically perfect in every single way.

Omega Speedmaster, hands down, perfectly balanced, as all things should be

·

#omegaspeedmaster But best overall idea/concept of all time: Casio F-91W

Let’s be honest here, Rolex.

From the beginning until now there’s barely any changes to their design and people still loves it.

Plus look at how many watches from other brands took inspiration from Rolex’s design.

I agree with you.

·

Grand Seiko has some great designs.

And I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I was drawn to Grönefeld when I first saw them, before I knew anything about the brand.

·

There is only one real answer.. Cartier.

Santos, Tank, Crash, Ballon Bleu, Pasha. I could go on and on. Their designs are consistently iconic.

They're just popular. Quite dull designs to be honest.

·

Patek Philippe’s Calatrava design is perfection to me. There’s nothing I would change about it. My grail is the 5127G. Look it up, and you’ll understand why.

·

No contest. Perfect. Rolex Explorer 1016.

Breitling.

·

I would say:

- Lange/Original Glashütte

- Datejust

- Calatrava

Maybe “dull” is the ingredient for a timeless design 🤔.

If we look at anything that people say “timeless” or “classy”, most of the time it has dull or conservative design.

I also agree with your pick, Cartier would be a close second for me.

And if we look at their catalog, their more popular models has “dull” designs compared to the other.

Too many beautiful watches to qualify that question. It’s like trying to comprehend absolute non-existence of one’s self.

·

Royal oak, Patek and Zenith 😎

·

The Patek Philippe Calatrava Rose Gold 6119R is perfect in every way (in my opinion)

·

agree with other commenters that it’s got to be Rolex. i’m not a Rolex fan boy, i swear. but you can’t deny that if you walk up to a civilian (i.e., someone not into watches like we all are) and ask them to picture a watch in their mind, 9 times out of 10, they’re going to be picturing something like the no date Sub or the Explorer 1.

for that fact alone, Rolex has cemented its status as the archetypal watch, and the best design of all time.

but give it another few decades and the generation growing up now with the Apple Watch might picture that in their minds as the archetypal watch over a Rolex.

i might be biased, but these 2 take it home for me

Does no-one know how to read? He was asking, "which BRAND" and you're all giving one watch answers. BRAND !! 🤣🤣

·

The Seiko Turtle is Inconic and perfect. Homaged by many.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual or DateJust - stick dial had been copied by literally everyone.

For Choronographs : OMEGA speedmaster.

·

Love all of these, but that date just is perfection.

Talking design language I think Nomos nailed it, and in fact many microbrands out there like MING, Nodus, Brew, Maen, Kurono. Talking about design from a iconic perspective Cartier or Rolex, considering their designs withstood the test of time.

Edit: Sorry, just can’t decide on a singular BEST DESIGN. That’s the whole fun with watches, isn’t it?

The fun of this question is to see if someone can answer it!

The blingograph from Forsining. More affordable luxury than Filippo Loreti could ever dream of.

The Grand Vizier approves!

Gerald Genta must be recognized for the watch designs of the 70s and other Swiss Watch House brands have adopted his style then and today, there has been a re-resurgence of that concept with integrated bracelets. There have been many off shoots. Without Genta, the off shoots may not have happened. I compare this to Hendrix as a rock guitarist trend setter and if he did not do what he did, would there have been a Randy Rhoades or an Eddie Van Halen etc. or even Slash? All it needs is one to set the bar for other to go beyond. Rolex with its submariner also set a bar. Omega 1950 & 1960s set trends then the Speedmaster FIOS. Blancpain fifty fathoms may be one to put somewhere. Then there is Ming, its own unique design with signature case and dial design. Feynman with its lizard tail style subsidiary seconds hand near the 7 o'clock position. Pilot watches like Breguet, IWC, Laco, Stowa, Tutima and Hanhart then Breitling Navitimer etc. Cartier Tank and Santos. One can go on and on. It is all good.

Based on production and sales? The Casio F91-W. Per the interwebs 90 million have been sold...since 1989. That dwarfs Rolex, Omega, Cartier, ALS, Patek, Grand Seiko, AP, VC for the same time period, if not more.

Wearing the F91-w as we speak

·

Rolex Daytona or Submariner. Literal Icons of horology. They’re like the 911 of watches- Rolex takes a methodical approach to iterating them and making continuous improvements but always staying true to the design formula. One of the main reasons I put them up there as a winner is because both models have been in continuous production since they were released.

It's tough - I know speedies and daytons are the sort of ones people consider icons. My oddball perspective dislikes those super mainstream 'perfect designs'

My blue glacier SLGA017 is brilliant design for me - simple and beautiful and good for any activity or function

Image

would also add a GS diver to my perfect list, when I get one 😉

·

Damn I’m im going to get hate for this one I think but if I’m being striaght with you I think the Rolex sub no date is the best design in my mind. Just gets it done in a robust sporty way ya know? And yes then I date part matters for me.

Just wish those bracelets would taper!!!!

This is a tough one, I think there are several designs that are iconic and stand the test of time. For me I would choose the Rolex Submariner. The sub has not only stood the test of time but has become a cultural icon that has become the standard to which all dive watch designs are measured against. Are there more technically impressive watches? Most definitely but I don’t think they’re as iconic and desirable as a Submariner. Show a regular person with little knowledge about watches a Rolex Submariner and say a Patek Philippe Calatrava, more often than not, said person would choose the submariner
