Does it make sense to buy an expensive Quartz watch?

Hi,

I’m considering getting my gf a watch for her birthday. I recently got an Omega AT 150 and she seemed to liked some of the ladies de ville prestiges when looking around the shop.

Considering her wearing habits, a battery powered watch would make more sense than an automatic, since the latter one would have to be reset every weekend.

But now I’m wondering whether it makes sense to invest a few thousand bucks on a quartz watch: like for an automatic, I understand that they are nice pieces of work with a lot of technic and it‘s difficult to built precise drives, but why is a quartz watch so expensive? Only material? Brand? Or are they also difficult to manufacture?

More general: is there a point in buying an expensive Quartz watch?

I personally prefer mechanical movements, but can totally understand why some people prefer the convenience of quartz. I have no idea how much the Omega quartz watches sell for, but I suspect that they are probably in line with those of Cartier, and personally, I think that the Cartier designs make it easier to justify a higher price point for quartz.

I think there is a lot of sense in a good quartz watch.

If your GF doesn't care about the movements, quartz makes far more sense than mechanical. Replacing a battery every few years is much easier than resetting the watch every week, or selling it at a massive loss a year down the line because she doesn't bother with it.

·

If the watch is meant to be worn on a regular basis, then absolutely. Most people I know would not want the hassle of setting a mechanical watch, and I also keep plenty of quartz watches around in case I just need to get out of the house in the morning.

Also, my most expensive watch, which would probably be considered affordable by this community, is indeed a quartz watch.

As a male who has had to purchase many things for his wife in order to apologize for his behavior, his excessive drinking, his many expensive hobbies, his unrivaled ability to offend others, his constant foot-in-mouth-itis, and his overall disagreeable nature, I would say:  Buy her whatever she wants!  It doesn't matter if it's quartz, or mechanical, or made out of cardboard.  Just buy her what she wants.

·

Why are mechanical watches so much more expensive than quartz?  The movement is only a small part of the cost.  Definitely makes sense to get technologically and functionally superior quartz if one doesn't have a hang-up about it.

+1 for this.

Buy her a DeVille if she likes the DeVille.

Brand and build quality helps, and Omega is pretty solid all round.

·

I can swallow a quartz watch up to $5K… cannot justify higher cost as the amount of finishes can be done on the movement just isn’t there. But I’m sure there are people who can.

·

There are tons of big brands that will sell watches for $3k-5k using a Sellita SW300 in them. The wholesale price of a top grade one of those movements is still only a few hundred bucks. A watch is more than the sum of its parts, and there is more to a watch than just its movement. If your gf likes the DeVille then don't worry about quartz vs. mechanical

Quartz watches are great.  More reliable, more accurate and more convenient in terms of grab and go.  Plus servicing is far cheaper and faster.

Watched this earlier as well. It really makes you appreciate high end quartz pieces made by GS.

My wife loves her Cartier Tank Solo and her Omega Constellation. Both quartz. Both absolutely beautiful.

Yes, and other quality quartz pieces as well. I am considering adding a Longines VHP Conquest to my collection.

Thanks, haven’t thought about them, but I’ll take a look!

great video, thanks for sharing. Maybe I should get a quartz then 😁

Also quartz has benefits for smaller watches as the shallower movement allows the watch to stay in proportion.  There are plenty of suitable watches in smaller sizes from Longines, Omega and Cartier (inter alia).  It is to be her watch, her choice

·

it is the brand that matters. Seriously if AP ever launches a Quartz RO, I’m sure the price would increase even more. Haha.

I’m sure they did and TGV on Urban Gentry had one for a while.

Expensive Quartz watch is truly a choice made by watch enthusiasts.

For eg your Grand Seiko SBGN001-5 models that are based on the 9F quartz movement. This is basically GS picking the right crystal thats aged at their facility and adjusted some 500 + times a day so that even fluctuations in temperature do not impact accuracy.

We are talking about accuracy of + or - 10 seconds/year. There are super quartz movements even from Breitling.

IMO, almost no one wants the hassle of a mechanical watch except us watch mavens who just love the imperfections and constant futzing required to keep time reasonably accurately. Unless you are 100% sure the giftee is a watch nut/nerd/enthusiast go quartz, is my thinking.

·

I like quartz watches very much and now prefer them to mechanical ones. I have my eye on a Longines VHP. Mrs Munky, though, tends to think I have enough watches. This may be a difficult one to negotiate.

Buy your girlfriend a quartz watch. With five grand to buy it with, I am sure she will be your partner for life!

·

Buy her what she likes.

Bonus: you save at initial purchase and it only becomes less expensive over time. Servicing a mechanical Omega is $700 (or thereabouts) and a new battery (even paying inflated Omega boutique prices) is around $70.

·

If it's for a gift, quartz make sens even at higher price. If the person does not care about mechanical or not, then more of the price goes into what the person will actually like: the design, the finishing, etc...

Plus, always take consideration of the service cost. Depending on the financial situation of the receiver, an expensive automatic watch could be a poisonous gift.

·

I see a clear pattern here, thanks for your thoughts! so quartz it shall be 😃

·

Personally my daily watch is a Quartz, because im always late for work! and my mechanical watches are all sitting around like decorations...and everyone is right about servicing...Quartz are cheaper to maintain. And no one is gonna go up to ask her "is it quartz or auto", unless she hangs out with watch nerds like you...HAHAHAHHA

·

I’ve got my eye on a 9F Grand Seiko, particularly the #sbgx261. The accuracy and convenience of quartz + the high quality finishing of a luxury brand = killer watch. Not to mention, it’s more affordable!
