Have your feelings towards the Moonswatch changed?

The poll speaks for itself. Where are you on the Moonswatch now, and has that opinion changed over time?

I'll comment upfront and say I'm in the first category. When the announcement came I thought it sounded outrageously fun, a bit of a shake up for the industry, and just good times all round. As the months have gone on, and they're still stupidly rare to get a hold of, and reports come in on how easy it is to scratch the plastic, etc, I've become a bit, "What's the point?" about the Moonswatch, especially at the price asked, and would be happier just wearing a Casio Marlin all weekend for a fun, cheap watch experience.

·

I wouldn't throw um out but I'm in no hurry to get one

·

I think they, Swatch, haven't handled it as well as I would have hoped by cancelling the online sales. My nearest retailer is 100miles away and they won't hold one for me, which to me is insane.

But the issue is the hype and a lot of flippers. However, instill like the idea of them and no point getting upset over a plastic watch. I'll get it when I get it.

·

I had no interest in the watch, but I thought it was rather creative marketing. I'm unsure whether it is a positive or negative development for Omega. But my opinion hasn't changed.

·

Small comment from me - at First i was interested in it mucho mucho, however after checking it at my local Swatch shop I did find it more a toy than a watch.

·

I admit I fell for the hype and really wanted one.  As I now understand the general feeling is they are not very good, I shall pass.

·

I happened to be one of the people who stood outside the Swatch store in Times Square in the early hours of launch day and snagged one in that crazy initial wave. I think my enjoyment of this watch is tied much more to the moment than the watch itself. For me, it was amazing to line up with watch lovers from around the world having this collective experience, and it represented, as others have noted, a point of levity, accessibility, and pure fun in what can otherwise be such a stilted and exclusionary hobby. I get why people are over it, but for me it still holds that charm.

·

My sentiments are more or less same/similar to most. I’ll get them whenever is available. no hurry.

·

I'm not sure which category I fall into.

For ME, it was and remains a "thanks, but no thanks".

It's far from a stupid idea, however! I thought, and still think, that this is a genius marketing move by Omega and Swatch.

·

It was more about the advertising then selling watches. With limited supply they stay in the news as people complain about availability. Swatch would be still obscure without it and Omega just got introduced to a new generation of people. They really don't care about selling watches, only hype

·

I was interested at first, but no internet sales means no Moonswatch for me.

·

It’s a $260 plastic watch using the same bits as their $100 chronos. They look cool and I love the look of Mars and Neptune, but the more real world photos I see they more they remind me of toys. That strap is ridiculously long and unnecessarily bulky and looks more at home on a kids watch.

All that said, they’ve created buzz about watches and Swatch, which is always a plus.

·

I’d rather have a bag of Jelly Babies 😉

·

No one ever went to the moon. So no moon watch.

Swatch is so obscure they have stores all over the planet selling watches to people...

  • Swatch target market was the young people and Omega targeted the boomers with money . This collaboration was to expand their customer base. They don't sell enough of them to make any real profit and send them to retailers in very small quantities.

Helloooo: make customers line up.  Long wait.  Controlled supply to create sense of exclusivity. It's the journey,  not the destination,  in this case the watch.  All tactics that should be already familiar to anyone here,  because already used by: Apple to launch earlier iPhone; night clubs to built buzz; deBeer to artificially keep the price of diamond high,  for that matter, same with oil companies.

·

I like the idea, i think it was a smart move from Swatch (people are still lining up infront if the stores) but my opinion hasn't changed. For me it has always just been a Marketing Stunt and i reapect that even if i don't want a moonswatch.

·

So I was lucky enough to get one of them on launch day.  I thought it would be readily available and I wouldn't feel weird wearing mine.  I planned on getting one for my siblings and girlfriend to get matching watches and we could wear it all summer and not worry about messing them up.

But since it is so limited I feel weird wearing it and banging it up.  I also have not bonded with it as much as I thought I would (being into space and planes and that kinda thing). I am thinking about selling it because it gets almost no wrist time...

·

I love the idea and I want a Mars version, but the way this has been handled by Swatch gives me the icks. I won’t queue up for anything except a supermarket checkout.

·

So as we're about to tick over to 200 votes, 64.3% of respondents are either off the idea, or were never on with the idea to begin with. That feels 'about right' to me, in terms of how I perceive the watch community at present, ie: there's still some love for the concept, but I think it's been changing over time, and I think the majority of people aren't into it, whether all along, or whether the feeling came more recently.

(Plus, I fully and freely acknowledge respondents here are more hardcore 'watch types' - or else they wouldn't belong to this site - and among people who just like fashion watches, for example, and wouldn't know this forum exists, love for the Moonswatch is probably much higher out there in that group.)

·

It was almost worst than a hord of zombies in Black Friday sale shopping mall. All this over hype over price piece of plastic that says Omega! And lied to us about two watch per person, then they ran out. and what else? oh yeah they will be available on line for everybody to buy! I really thought about it to be honest I rather pay more and have the real thing.

·

I liked it when they introduced it, and will pick one up if I happen to see one in a shop (retail price only).  Unfortunately there’s no Swatch store near me, and I’ve heard that it isn’t going to be available online.  I think if the product is viewed as a cool Swatch, as opposed to an Omega, it doesn’t diminish the Omega brand or Moonwatch specifically.  That said, I can’t see why anyone, anywhere ought to pay a cent over retail.
