Why are Seikos so addictive?

just got a second seiko with the SRPJ47 Time Sonar. for the first time i will not sell one seiko for another which i usually did all the time. the willard will stay cause i wear it quite often... I really think i could just collect seikos in the future and be happy ๐Ÿ˜„ damn why are they so addictive, have so many models and such a cool design language? if you are a longterm seikoholic let me know how i can not fall into this addiction ๐Ÿ˜‚ or just tell me what should be the next step for a third seiko piece haha ๐Ÿ™ˆ

It's what adults do once they've outgrown Pokemon. I've worn Seikos exclusively for 25 years, I know what I'm talking about.

ยท

As much as I love Seikos, my modest collection isn't restricted to just Seiko. I do love 'em however and though I own just three, wouldn't rule out another in the future for sure. My only beef is that they seem to have gotten a LOT more expensive than they were just a few years ago (am looking at YOU SNA411 & Alpinist! LOL!)

The strap on the Willard looks cool what company?

ยท

The orange SKX against the leather is just making that Seiko 5 pop even more. Great shot.

Willards really do belong on straps, they just work so well with various straps rather than the bracelet.

ยท

I purchased the alpinist sarb 17 and I can honestly say one of my favourite watches . Fits and hugs my wrist perfectly . I would love a blue one but super hard to find .

yes gshocks are addictive too... especially squares. been there done that ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Yes seiko's are really addictive and it's hard to trade one Seiko for getting another one. Even I have tried to trade some of the existing seiko's in my humble collection for getting a new one but in the last moment backed off from doing so as each of them have their unique style and appeal. So in end i was left with no other choice than purchasing the new one to fullfill the itch of owning another great Seiko.

This is what Seiko addiction is like i think ๐Ÿ™„.

May be some day i will be able to get rid of this addiction.๐Ÿ˜œ

I started collecting in 2019 at a much more premium level and as I clomped around and became more familiar with the lay of the land something about Seiko's combination of design, features and price point made it feel like horological home. I jumped into WC's WRUW two months ago by posting 30+ days of some of the favorites from what is now just an excuse to hoard.

They lube the gasket to the case back with liquid heroine.....

I've also been wondering why Seikos are so addictive, as I never managed to convince myself to get one. ๐Ÿ˜„ I like their design language, heritage and prices, but a few things always held me back:

  • relatively inaccurate movements compared to even entry-level Swiss stuff (-15/+20s/day is not very appealing to me)

  • most of their watches are pretty chunky - e.g. I wanted to get an Alpinist at one point, but the case felt too thick for the watch; same with many of their divers. I can't think of any popular models around 10-12mm, which is the typical thickness I normally go for.

  • quality issues (e.g. misaligned bezels)

  • poor bracelets

It seems to me that a 600-700 EUR Seiko will find it hard to compete with a similarly priced Tissot (e.g. PRX or Gentleman) if we're focused mostly on the quality. Not to mention the competition from brands like CW a few hundred EURs up the price ladder.

Still, waiting for Seiko to make the right watch for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

all valid critcs i can totally relate to ๐Ÿค i had to realign both bezels on these two and with the willard i was really pissed. a misaligned bezel is just not acceptable at a 1000โ‚ฌ watch! i really dont know why i keep comming back to seiko allthough their bad qc compared to swiss brands like hamilton mido or certina ๐Ÿคท i think it is really just their design language that i enjoy looking at. and whenever i watch youtube sotc videos from seiko only collectors i want another one after it ๐Ÿ˜‚ just way too many options with that brand haha

I buy , wear & get another one a bit better than the old one , jeez Itโ€™s been a 44 year love affair of the brand for me . I just sold my JDM SARB017 Alpinist and will get a replacement of a better Seiko when I decide what I want . I currently own a SPB147 & SPB183 and am interested in a SLA043 next if I find a good second hand one for the right price . Get used to it you are now a Seikopath lol.

I just went and bought two online , bloody expensive but they look like they are worth it :)

One day I looked in my watch box and there were 4 Seiko watches. The next day I looked in my desk drawer and there were 5 Casio watches. And yet, I donโ€™t recall buying any of them. It just happens. ๐Ÿ™„

I think you could have just said Christopher Ward that would have explained it :)

Oh yeah. I know the feeling. At first I added a Seiko to my collection. Now I have a watch collection AND a Seiko collection. Just so much to choose from.

ยท

Personally I think Seiko are so much better value than anything Swiss ( with the possible exception of some micros maybe)

Wish my Omega's had the DLC coating, it's brilliant imho. For me Seiko sweet spot is Prospex ยฃ500-ยฃ1200, tho buy used & save money.

ยท

Just bought the SLA065J1.. it's so nicely built.. My love for this brand grows bigger everyday

Seikos and G Shocks. I keep reminding myself to hold back on buying more in order to give my collection some variety

u will be amazed how good they fit... i tried everything, normal natos, seatbelt natos, ribbed natos, chevrons from crown and buckle, perlons and so on... nothing fit as good as an mn strap from erikas original... they really hold the watchhead in place and feel comfortable too the entire day ๐Ÿค™

I have Zero hate for Seiko, Never have never will.

They are addictive because they make so many really cool and nice watches. My daily driver is my Black Bay Pro, but I own 3 Seikos and can't make myself part with any of them...LOL

ยท

The diversity of range is spectacular & the movements are rock solid despite the nay sayers (there are bound to be some failures at this volume)

Build quality & dials are usually great.

What's not to like, get them all ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you find yourself not wearing it, flip it ๐Ÿ˜‚ never pay full price

Seikos are about half of my collection
