So Im going to chase the dream

So ...I have been quiet on here recently as just after I got back from my holiday leave, and on the cusp of buying my next watch... I was informed that my job is no longer required(downsizing / market performance and all that jazz)

Now to some this may seem like bad news , but to be quiet honest my employer is pretty sound and I have enjoyed my time there.

I have worked in IT for about 13 years and it was great , but watches and people are my true passions, so this seems like a great kick up the ass to take action.

I have wanted to move into the watch world for some time now and I think im going to make the jump! and start applying for AD positions!

Wish me luck WC

thank you! I I am very lucky in that I live about a 15 min walk away from all the AD's so I can pretty much lurk outside with a sign if I get desperate

Good luck with the job hunt I think you're ideally suited ,it's always good to talk to AD'S that actually care about the product and collect watches

fingers crossed , I have spoken to some insiders already and they said I had a much better chance than I think as a lot of the folks have come from other retail positions and learn about watches on the job :)

Good luck! I wish you the best. A few years ago, I walked into a friend’s small mens wear shop to find him not selling any of the items on his racks but busy serving coffees to at least 6 fellas. One young man was not drinking coffee or smiling. B was let go from his luxury retail gig getting a little upset, he knows me as an older guy who has lived life pretty hard. The coffee drinkers were droning on about their watches, B looked at me as if a light flicked on, he needed to reinvent himself with his abilities. B is now happily working at a luxury watch and jewelry boutique where I am an occasional shopper. His knowledge of timepieces is rudimentary but he understands retail: selling is selling. Watch guys do most of the talking and sell the items more or less to themselves.

He is not you and you not he but I am confident that you are confident of your skills!

Very best,

J

Good luck with your plans! Great and fun future ahead👍

Here in Jamaica we have a saying. "As one door closes, another opens" You're contribution is needed elsewhere, go apply your genius and charm now as an AD, you might never know what the future holds. Congratulations, may this new chapter bring you marvel and success.

·

As someone who works for a luxury Watch boutique, being an AD definitely sounds like a lot of fun! Best of luck!

·

Awesome good luck with it!

·

Good luck on the transition! Get out there and crush it!

·

Wow.

I was working in IT since 2010 and market is not on our side right now. I've been fired last year in December and it took me 6 full month to find myself a decent job.

I salute your stoic view on the situation. Wish you all the best in a watch industry!

·

This is my dream retirement part time job! Look at watches all day, chat with people about watches, and get paid!!

·

A move from IT (generally well paid), to retail (generally not so well paid), doesn't sound like a great move to me. Also keep in mind that although people say you should work at something you love, then you'll never work a day in your life, blah, blah, blah, I've generally found it to be total BS. I love film, for example, and got to work for a major movie house for several years. By the end of it, I hated watching films, I saw film as an industry to make money and not an artform, and I really felt it cruelled my love of film.

So... be careful what you wish for. And good luck with whatever comes next.

Enjoy your garden leave. It'll be a good time to pause, reflect, and discern your next steps. I somewhat echo the concern of @complication re. moving from IT to retail.

I was not expecting so many responses when I woke up this morning , it really made my day and motivated me.

Thank you so much! All of you x

I broke down my current salary and the numbers :

current 32 + 12 on call (which was being removed anyway) so lets call it 32

Salary avrage for a salesperson - supervisor 23-26

so 5-6k of commission a year and on the same income. :)

This does not seem like a bad deal to me ;)

Well, every end is a new beginning, it's cheesy but it's true.

Amor Fati in it's essence)

I know that feeling. In 2014 I was going through hard times and I needed to pickup a waiter job in a restaurant. It was the easiest money I ever had and if this restaurant didn't fire me, I dont know if I was able to walk off this.
