To Murph or not to Murph?

I have the opportunity to buy a Murph 38 brand new at $200 below retail. Problem is I have a lot of expenses coming up this summer (I’m getting married). Should I jump on the chance or just let it ride and be happy with what I have?

Edit1: I appreciate everyone’s concern about the upcoming expenses, but they aren’t too much and I have a lot put back. I normally just don’t like spending money on myself. I got the go ahead from my fianceé until she saw it. She said it looked boring as hell lol. I’m now looking for suggestions for a dress watch with an interesting dial.

Edit2: I realized it wasn’t necessarily the price, I was trying to find an excuse not to buy it because it just wasn’t right for me. After searching most of the evening and this afternoon I ended up pulling the trigger on a Hamilton Boulton small seconds L. I’ve always loved art deco style and this watch reminds me of a tank without being a rip off and looks a bit more laid back.

Maybe your fiance can buy it and then give it to you as a wedding present

·

Go for it. You'll figure the rest out. Unless you really won't, then don't.

·

Let it ride and be happy with what you have.

·

If nothing else you could turn around a resell it if needed for more than 200, right?

·

Let it ride. Saw the Murph on sale at Macy’s for a huge stackable discount a few week back.

·

Don’t sacrifice needed money on an an unnecessary watch. Also, what @marc1979 said.

·

If you major expenses coming up especially wedding, I would let it ride. The Murph will be on sale again, during Christmas for sure you can get better discounts. I have seen the 42mm being sold for 50% during holiday season so the 38mm won't be far away considering how overpriced it is. At my Swatch AD, it is always at 20% discount.

·

Skip the watch, elope, and put the money towards a home, debt, or invest.

Or, skip the watch, until all the budget for the wedding is sorted. It will always be available for a discount.

·

Get the watch.

Save much more money by eloping.

;)

·

Never overextend yourself for a luxury like a watch. You can always get it when you can afford it… and you won’t be stressed out, so you can enjoy it.

·

A colleague shared with me his wisdom one day saying... "I cannot afford to save that much money"... still use it everyday to temper my purchases (internet shopping makes it relatively too easy).

I appreciate the advice. We’re already eloping but haven’t really thought about a house yet. Good call.

I agree with your fiancée, the murph may be the most overrated watch out there, and as dull as a turkey roast.

You could look at Frederique Constant for some textured dial inspiration, lots of choices. For something stretching dress watch (ok, it's not a dress watch) there's the Certina Moonphase. It's a big rabbit hole, just stick to your budget to try and limit your choices!

·

Let it ride, you can get a Murph every week Preowned like new for $600-700 on every market possible. Watchuseek, Facebook groups, eBay , chrono24.

·

Ok first big ups for porko rooso. For a similar budget to the murph, micro brands would be a great choice. I like farer.

·

If you're having to ask if you can afford it, I'd say cash flow is on your mind. Let it go for now. It's not a rare watch in the slightest, and it will be on sale again in the future. Don't let FOMO cloud your thinking.

·

Don't do it.

One of the most disappointing watches I've owned. I kept it for a couple of weeks & tried, but had to get rid... The reason? It was useless, illegible in anything other than perfect conditions. Gutted, loved the look, the feel and the connection to a superb film. But just reflected everything to the point it was useless. Gutted 😢

·

I would say no, for two reasons : 1. If you have to ask then you don't really want it. 2. I like Hamilton field watches but the Murph is overpriced for a pair of cathedral hands.

·

Well, my fiancé got me a Raymond Weil Maestro in green. I'm in love with it, and the dial is mesmerising.

The photo doesn't do it justice. The way the light plays with the pattern is superb.

You can also look towards the Seiko presage collection. Tons of colours and dial textures there.

·

Marriage: first question, first marriage? Answer optional but , if the answer is yes , I would think if your not cashed up don’t do it . Nice watch , bad timing…. Second marriage then definitely no 😂 .

·

Priorities come first. There many be other opportunities down the road to buy a Murph for even less, you never know! Like many have said, never go into debt for a watch. And by the way, "boring" is subjective!
