Watch course for beginners. Chapter 1: Your spouse

Welcome to this first chapter in ”Watch course for beginners”. Here we focus on the foundation to create the watch collection in your dreams.

It’s easy to think that a careful research about brands, watch types, movements and personal taste is essential. Well it’s not of no value but let’s not cut corners. If you are in a relation it’s importantant to read your spouse reactions in a best possible way. To avoid this minefield this chapter will provide a guide of common reactions to your potentially new watch. Reactions that might at first appears harmless but in reality not so much.

Image

When you found a nice watch that you are eager to present to your spouse her responce might include some loaded words that you as an new collector has to be aware about. Of course there might be individual variations in your spouse reactions compared to the findings presented below. However, years of study show some reliable statistics of common expressions that you, as an aspirational collector, has to navigate. If not, you might end up with no (Apple watch) or just one watch. In the watch community it’s a well known fact that owning just one watch is not defining a watch collector. The so called ”one watch collection” is a myth.

Please note that this course primarily is for men. Probably it’s also applicable for women but there is not enough statistical data available to confirm this theory.

Here is responses you might face and need to prepare a strategy for to become a successful watch collector:

#1 Fine!

This is the word your spouse use to end an argument when she known she is right and you know you have to stop talking.

#2 Nothing!

Means something, and you should be worried.

#3 Go Ahead!

Do NOT confuse this with permission! It’s a dare and don’t even think about it.

#4 Whatever!

Your spouse way of calling you an idiot.

#5 That’s OK!

Your spouse is thinking long and hard on how and when you will pay for your mistake.

#6 Wow!

This is not a compliment. Your spouse is amazed that one person could be so clueless.

Your task after this first lesson is to prepare your strategy to overcome possible obsticles ahead. Find your arguments and/or defence weapon. A gift might be better than words if you just come up with a word sallad. If succesful you can foresee a fantastic lifelong hobby that soon filled your first watchbox.

Good luck!

Joking aside I think we all been there one way or another. All of my decisions haven’t been spot on.

After you mumble the price you paid for your latest shiny gem and it registers (especially compared to either the last present you bought or your grumbling at the cost of a vacation these days)

There is two different economies. It’s since ancient times👍

·

I only tell my spouse that I found a new watch around my birthday or Christmas. By that time, it's already been in my shopping cart for a few days waiting for my credit card or hers. 😊

You are way overqualified for my beginners course.

Yeah, watch purchases over a certain amount aren't even discussed unless it's offered by the other for a milestone event such as a 60th birthday or a significant anniversary. Otherwise, those funds are better spent building memories together by traveling to exotic destinations or spending time with our children on the East Coast. My wife once tried on a Santos medium which looked absolutely stunning on her, but opted for the vacation to Alhambra and Marrakesh instead. I, on the other hand, chose my Tudor BB smiley! 😁

I guess being married for 38 years has taught me a thing or two! 😊

·

I find it's better to beg forgiveness than ask for permission.

Excellent defence👍 I think you are ready for chapter 2. But be aware, your brilliant workaround might hit you twice as hard when going for your next watch. Keep your guard up and you will be fine.

We are happy of your interest🎉 It’s a bit messie at the office right now. Something about unpaid bills. You know mobiles, rent and stuff. I have to come back to you.

Thank you! It’s easy to get that one wrong. Specially without eye contact.

I'll stick this one in the mix

#7why?

And the truthful answer is 'I'm an addict and I like it', but you dress it up with 'well its in the sale' or 'Jodi likes it' or the best one is 'it will make my collection more homogenous', in the vain hope that big words will make it more credible (it doesn't).

Cheers Per.

Thank you Rob👍 Not a bad defence tactic imo. We will consider if WHY? shall be brought in in the 2nd edition of the course.

C is for Chopard perhaps?

As far as the spouse is concerned, well, just buy her/him an equally nice item.

Chopard is the correct answer, well done👍

Excellant, but expensive, defence strategy. A+

I’m new to the watch collecting, already giving me the eye rolls when she hear me about buying watches lol. I think she’s fine with it, since she bought me a gshock for my birthday recently.
