My world is shrinking

My recent acquisition of a 1957 Seamaster has got me teetering on the edge of the 'Vintage' rabbit hole, and we all know what happens next. You start looking, you fall in, and then you start buying.

I found this rather sweet Swiss Made, 30mm Roamer Popular for a decent price and I couldn't help myself.

Image

I'm not sure what age it is, so if anyone can throw some info my way it would be appreciated.

Image

It seems to be running okay over night, but ultimately, it's too similar in size and style to my Omega Seamaster, so I'll probably let it go soon. In the meantime, I'm going to clean it up, throw a NOS leather strap on it, and enjoy some more vintage vibes.

They made some lovely watches! I recently got my Roamer Supershock, made around 1950s. I imagine yours will be there or thereabouts as well, due to their change in design and manufacturing after the 60s and 70s. Here's my Roamer!

Mate! I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you the rabbit hole is bottomless my friend. Tie a long bit of string around your waist John 😉

What a cool piece, John! It's a great find. Perhaps @Aurelian or @MrBloke could assist, as they are experts in this field.

Congrats and enjoy!

After joining Watch Crunch, noticed so many members enjoy at least some vintage watches in their collections but I am never going back to what was essentially my first love in the hobby. My vintage journey was much more nightmares than pleasant dreams but collecting vintage back in the 70s and 80s was more challenging than sampling the odd one or 100 today imo. The community is larger and enthusiasts are connected globally.

You are right. When I bought my first vintage watch thirty years ago I was a blind man in an unlit cave. No one knew anything. Collecting vintage is only possible with the internet.

Nice little 1950's Roamer. It will have its own in-house caliber. Roamer did their own thing. They get dangerous to collect, especially 1960's and 1970's models because they are very often cobbled together using mismatched cases and movements. Everyone should have a vintage Roamer.

Er… I might have chipped into Roamer multiple times on here. The Popular was their 1950s everyday watch, usually with a Brevette case, with one of their MST movements.

Fellow Roamer owner here, mine from 1969. My father gave it to me; he received it from his auntie and uncle for his 21st birthday in ‘69.

This is a good website with lots of models: http://mirius.co.uk/WatchIndex.htm?Model,All

Never heard of Roamers before but that is a beautiful watch John! Looking forward to seeing more of your pics after cleaning it up a bit and switching out the strap.

Congrats, John

That's a looker.

I've walked by the rabbit hole a few times but thankfully haven't jumped in yet.

I'll live vicariously through you fine folks.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. Vintage is fun if you like to tinker with the watch too.

📣 "Hey John, can you hear me down there? Let me go find a rope, buddy. We'll get you out of there, shortly! "

Seriously, what a charming little watch, John! I admit, I'm a bit envious of you, that you can pull off these sub 35mm crackers. I don't know if I have the "wrist confidence" to do that. Hope everything goes according to your "Master Plan", but if not, you've got yourself another gem.😍

Now, let me go find that rope. If anyone else comes by in the meantime and sends you down a basket of lotion, don't partake. 😉🤣

You're a funny guy, Lawrence. Can you send down my cheque book as well. I think I might need it. 🤓

Thats lovely. I've gambled on a few vintage pieces, but only modest sums on entry level - definitely no premium stuff. Theres been a couple that turned out to be duff, but also some lovely pieces. At least if only spending say, under £100 its not a disaster if its duff.

·

Lovely roamer !!Vintage is the foundation to my personal collection and feel as if they are way more personable in terms of designs and artwork..the movements are small and are ornate ..I notice way more little details on a vintage watch than a modern one...back then is was kind of like your cellphone for which u had to look at it and wear it everyday and actually had to rely on it..that's why I think they stand the test of time.
