What luxury watches drop value quickly?

Hello all. I am putting together a video for my youtube channel and need your help.

I want to find 10 luxury, or entry level luxury watches, that drop value when sold second hand.

Basically want to show case 10 amazing value watches on the used market.

Would be great to have specific models identifed.

I think the first obvious brand is Grand Seiko.

Thank you all for your help.

You can add Nomos to your list. I bought a barely used Ahoi neomatik siren red for less than 2,600US$ and they are selling at 4,120US$ from Nomos online shop.

Perfect. It’s on the list   Thank you

Cartier comes to mind.

Ball

·

Rolex and Patek Philippe are the only two brands with the most pieces that consistently retain or increase in value.

Oh yeah, anyone paying MSRP for those forgot to even ask if the price could be lower. I've heard that sometimes you don't even need to ask.

·

Patek…..if you bought a used 5711 1 year ago.

I picked up mine used because it was too good of a deal but the local AD offered 15% off when I was looking around.

Outside of 3 brands all of them drop price significantly as soon as you strap it to your wrist, which is why you should be asking for a discount as an enthusiast if buying new.

The hit deminishes as yearly price increases take effect, however I believe we are at the point where MSRP prices are at peak for the mainstream brands.

·

Pretty much every brands you can think of, that said they are always exceptions, certain models from certain brands, such as Rolex, AP, or Patek, increase in value.

·

For Seikos there are different price behaviors depending on the rarety, line etc. I noticed higher end Prospex divers fall in price after release but then stabilize and keep their stable price over years (see older MM300s). But some limited editions can really go 🚀 over time eg SLA013 / SLA015. I am a huge Seiko fan because I feel there is a Seiko for everyone and every style/occasion out there and I enjoy the hunt.

Buy luxury watches from brands that you like not because they retain their value. Rolex and Patek are cool, but unobtainium for most people. GS, Nomos, Cartier, JLC are awesome brands with incredible watches that many can obtain and afford (especially second hand).

I’ll look more into their used offerings. Thanks.

Fully Agree!

I would say all Ball watches, most Girard Perregaux, most Tag Heuer & most Baume at Mercier. If you have a look in the sale section on Watchfinder you will come across other brands as well to add to the list!

I thought this was pretty accurate when I watched it a few months ago: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KH3yLLjpTtQ

Agreed. Even though I would consider the prices in Watchfinder's sale section still somewhat aspirational.

·

Based on watches in my collection, the brand with the largest percentage drop from MSRP is probably Oris

·

Bremont, Valcain, Rado, BAUME ET MERCIER All were seriously discountEd at Xmas.

·

Breguet and Chopard on the high end. Frederique Constant, Maurice Lacroix on the more affordable end.

·

Bell & Ross

Ball, with the source of the problem being that, while they make great watches, the company isn’t managed very well.  Management failure causes these watches to flood the grey market.  I think Jomashop may have more inventory than any AD in the USA.  I love the watches but wish the brand would be acquired by a better ownership, Swatch preferably.

You might be rehashing subject discussed constantly.  As a thought experiment, how about which brands regained their value most over the passage of time.  Within limited runs or families which ones have created equity over time? Has the mars race revived the moonwatch?  Which vintages have gained?  Almost like looking at wines.  Tudor rangers come to mind as an example.  Are there any quartzs that break that mode?  What happens to FP Jorne when the founder passes?

So:

Beyond current metrics, look at discontinued models and their increase or decrease in equity over time.

Most mid to high dress watches will lose quite a lot of value. think blancpain villeret, Breguets, some JLCs, VC patrimony. The cool thing is a lot of the time these are complications too, so you can grab a blancpain triple calender for half the price of a brand new one from JLC.
