About Me

I'm Christopher. I'm from Texas.

I've always loved watches and clocks, especially pocket watches and grandfather clocks. I have a really nice grandfather clock that I "inherited" from my aunt; she didn't die, she had a garage sale. And I thought the clock should remain in the family.

I lost the pocket watch that my grandfather gave me when I was 10, and I never purchased one for myself; however, I did purchase one for my son, and he still loves it and wears it.

I bought my first wristwatch from Walmart, a titanium divers watch that only cost me $25 in 1994's economy. I have since lost it. Not sure how or where, and I'm not shedding any tears over it, haha.

I bought my first "real" wristwatch in 1995/96 and that one is still in my house, although I have since given it to my son. It was a Citizen Promaster 5502 gold-tone diver's watch.

The three watches I wear now were all gifts (2 Christmas, 1 Valentine's Day): an Ecko Mens E95016G5 "The Encore Oz" dress watch, a Stuhrling Original Raceway Series watch with black dial, and a Tissot "Classic Dream" white dial dress watch.

I have recently formed an intention to start actively collecting wristwatches. I have been reading everything I can find about watch movements, watch construction materials, etc., but I am still very much a novice. 🙂

Welcome to WC and welcome to the madness 😉

Would love to see a pic of your grandfather clock. Hoping to get one down the road, but for now I'm happy with the wall clock I found.

Welcome onboard. We could use some more grandfather clock posts around here for sure.

Here are 2 pics. The clock was made either in the late 1970's or early 1980's, and the "9" has fallen off the face. We have the "9" in a drawer, and eventually plan to hire a horologist to adjust and "tune up" the clock's gears, and while he's doing that, we'll get him to put the "9" back on as well. 🙂

WHOA!! Just noticed the "6" was missing also!! I'd bet all the glue is starting to dry out. I'm certain that those numbers were probably dotted on with the tiniest amount of glue. 🤣

Dang…I’ve never seen a watch like your Ecko.

They were all the rage back in 2004-2007, when Marc Ecko was a big thing. Not sure if Ecko is still around, but those watches are all over E-Bay, if you want to acquire one. There are at least 50 different designs that I've seen, mine is one of the earlier ones. They're not very expensive, but they are beautiful, and go nicely with a suit and tie at any "dress code" event. 🙂

Welcome. You've started something here with clocks. I'd love to see more images and the internals. Very cool.

Hello and welcome, hope you enjoy your watch collecting hobby. Be prepared to be poor 😂. Constantly looking for the perfect watch ⌚ . It's fun but can be addictive too.

Surely you know what tempus fugit means. Am I right in assuming that every grandfather clocks at least strikes the hour? As a fairly recent acquirer of a family kitchen clock, I get to be pedantic that bells that count the hour are called strikes, and an actual tune is a chime. Some TouTube video said so.

I see the profile and I must ask how antique of typewriters are you collecting. Oldest I have is a Royal KMM, probably early 40's.

Oldest typewriter I have is a 1927 Underwood. I also have a mid -40's Remington Rand. Those are my two oldest. 🙂

Welcome!  Watches and clocks go together like peas and carrots.  Many in this group are also into clocks, myself included.  For me I've also been interested in vintage and antique mechanical things, especially phonographs (Victrola, Edison, etc..).

In the way of clocks, I am still in the beginning stages. The three mantle clocks that I have are Chinese-made replicas, but they are still nice display pieces that serve to break the monotony of my packed bookshelves. 😎 Here's the pics:

Awesome 😎 I was born/raised in Beaumont TX, but now living in East Texas. What's your favorite watch brand, and why? 🙂

You know I’m just a simple boy.   To me fancy is those orient bambino’s.  So I’d have to say I do lean more towards seiko/lorus.    Hell I’m wearing a lorus automatic right now.   You?

I don't actually have a favorite, yet. Until recently, I wasn't actually a collector. When I was younger, (i.e., 20's-30's) I wore cheap digital watches, $10 from Walmart type of stuff. Then, in 1995 or thereabouts, I bought A SINGLE dress watch, a Citizen Promaster, which I liked, but rarely wore, because I was afraid to scratch it! 🤣 When I got married, the first thing I got as a Christmas present from my wife was a Marc Ecko "Encore" watch, which I really liked. (It was dressier than the Citizen.) I wore that watch for years.

Then, 9 years later, for Valentine's Day, my wife bought me another watch (Stuhrling Original Raceway series), which, once again, I liked. I began wearing that as my main watch.

Then I got my third "nice watch" (a Tissot Classic Dream) for Christmas 2021. That's when I thought to myself, "I've got three nice watches. Maybe I should start collecting watches...?" LOL 🤣

I gave the Citizen to my teenage son, and kept the other three. All three of these watches look good and keep accurate time. I have no complaints.

But now that I have begun reading and researching watches, I have realized that I was ignorant in many areas, especially about movements, thus, I have spent the last year trying to collect data on which watch brands have which movements, which ones have good reputations, and which ones are within my budget. It's been a long climb. That's why I ask watch collectors such as yourself this question; I'm fishing for data. From real people, not Amazon review bots. lol 😎

Of the three watches I have currently, I'd say that the Tissot is my favorite, although all three have sentimental value, because they were gifts. 🙂
