Online impulse buying

Just wanted to find out how many of us make impulse watch purchases online?

After watching a YouTube review of the new MMI Turret Chronograph I went straight to their website and coughed up the cash for this one. Couldn’t resist the yellow dial and the 70’s vibe, it’s a Seiko Mecca Quartz but I don’t care I just love the overall design 🥰

oh wow, that yellow dial is gorgeous!

I did that with the Bernhardt retro world timer. Nice pick though. I always have difficulty understand the diver bezel on a 60 minute chronograph. Isn’t that what the sundial is for?

·

Never. It's just not in my personality. I analyze pretty much every purchase I make before pulling the trigger without exception.

Admittedly, I'm not the most fun person to go on vacation with, LOL.

·

Yes, in fact it's my WRUW post for today, it all looked good, until I noticed on arrival that the bezel was fixed and molded into the case, despite it looking like a diving bezel. But it's my fault for not reading the whole description on the website.

That yellow dial on that MMI does look amazing though.

I‘m with you on that front.  Something online will catch my interest and I will obsess over it for months before deciding.

Thankfully, for my sake, sold out! Great looking watch and I think you picked the best color for sure! 🔥

Every time I go on eBay it seems. This weeks haul.

Impulsive buying in watch collecting world is more contagious than Omicron virus. Who doesn’t do that?!😬

I’m normally pretty good and do a lot of research before buying anything, sometimes I even annoy myself with how long it can take me to make a decision 🤣 but this one really caught my eye and so I jumped on it. Lucky too, their all sold out now.

Cheers mate 🙏🏻

I love that Cyma it’s a gorgeous little watch. There’s some great bargains to be found on eBay once you really start looking and you know what to look for. Both watches look great 😊 mate

That’s definitely the first thing that caught my eye, I didn’t even read the specifications until I purchased it, which is totally out of character for me, I generally research a watch a lot before pulling the trigger

·

The Casio W737 was definitely an impulse buy for me. I was looking at pics of the DW291H which I already had and saw the W737 in “shopping” and bought one the next day.

I'm in the 'researcher' catagory, but not in the reasonable sense of spending half an hour here and there for a couple of months before deciding. No. Go big or go home. I can sit for hours and hours in a night long session going down the rabbit hole of movement stamps, brand history, serial numbers, dial types, hand design, company CEOs track records, factory locations and all manner of various micro-details of a watch I like. If after the end of hours and hours of this I'm not totally fed up with the watch, then that's the green light it's a keeper.

It happened to me 1 1/2 times...

1 time: Saw the Seiko Monster Pinguin from The Bold Hairspring and bought the watch from the store in Barcelona. It appeared the same watch as reviewed.

1/2 time: I was watching a review from the Yema Superman quartz and went directly to their website. There was a sale (happens often at Yema) at the time and I was scrolling through their offers. Instead of goiing for the Superman, I purchased the Rallygraph Blue Tarmac. A beautiful mecaquartz..🤣

It’s so easy to do. There’s so so many great watches out there that you would end up flat broke in an hour if you weren’t careful

So true.

And after 2 years, I'm into servicing vintage watches. Buying cheap broken watches, repairing them, learning about the history of the model and brand and finally selling them with a small profit.

I made a list of grail watches and buy them with the money I urned with the repairs. It takes me several months before I can buy these and that gives me time to think it over several times before pulling the trigger...

Excellent way to save for those grail watches. I do something very similar now, I used to buy and repair old, mainly Dunhill lighters. I’d find them on eBay, repair them, polished them up and sell them at a profit. Then I saw the same opportunity to do the same with watches. I’ve always been into collecting watches but this extra cash made it easier to get the ones I dreamed of.

Now I search for bargains everywhere, no matter what it is, if I think I can make a dollar out of it, I’ll grab it and fix it up if need be and put it straight onto eBay. So far I’ve purchased 2 Sinn 556’s and a ST104 Sinn and als a Tutima Seven Seas, just from buying, finding, trading things on eBay alone.

I really enjoy it, it’s a hobby you might say, but with an end to the mean’s.

Best of luck in the future with your hobby and entrepreneurial endeavours 👍

Cheers

Tony

I agree that the dial is gorgeous. Do you have the watch yet, and if so, are you pleased with your spur of the moment decision?

I've never purchased anything online without researching, but I have made some impulse buys in person. Most recently, I picked up an Omega f300Hz electronic watch at a meeting of our local watch enthusiasts group, without knowing anything about it. I was so enthralled with the super smooth sweep of the seconds hand, and the seller was a trusted friend, so I had no concerns. After purchasing, I did some research and discovered that not only did I get a great watch, but also a really great deal.

Haven't received the watch yet, still in production so hopefully early next month is their estimation.

Love the Omega by the way, I've seen a few different versions of the watch before but not with that dial layout. From what I read and heard about those, there's no ticking per say as you say it's more of a smooth sweep and to get one on the original bracelet is a bonus. Defiantly a keeper 👍🏼

Yes you have to look out watching Jody. As he lives in Sydney not far from me really I've actually been lucky enough to buy some watches directly from him, but I'm trying to stay away, cost me a fortune 😩

All my purchases have been impulse buys 😂

I'd be interested in hearing what you think of it once you've had a chance to experience it. I checked out their web site, and a YouTube review, and can see why you were attracted to it. Obviously lots of others shared your enthusiasm, as they are sold out.

The review mentioned the "fake" screw down pushers as a drawback. I have similar pushers in one of my chronographs, and I see them as a positive feature. In addition to providing visual interest, they act like little crown guards for the pushers, helping stabilize them. While "real" screw down pushers help with water resistance, they make it more difficult to quickly take advantage of the chrono capability. The "rota-date" display is similar to that of my Oris Aquis Great Barrier Reef III, but I don't recall seeing it on many other watches. My aging eyes find it hard to read, but it's a really nice way of providing the date without messing with the symmetry of the dial. And that yellow /orange dial is killer.

There seem to be an enormous number of variants of the Omega electronic watches - I've only come across one other online with the same day/date display and exact dial format. The original bracelet on mine is definitely a nice bonus, but certainly shows a ton of stretch. The smooth sweep is obtained as a result of the 300hz frequency, which also results in the watch "humming" when placed near your ear.

·

Would wear the yellow dialed watch pictured. Every single impulse buy has been flipped or gifted away. No exceptions.

Took me a while but I learned my lesson.

·

I have a strategy of buying that involves a level of impulse where I see a watch I like, but I'm undecided on whether it'll work on me.  For example, I tried on a Panerai recently. I was intrigued, but wondered whether it would be too big to wear generally. Anyway, I obtained a (very) cheap homage from Aliexpress and wore it for a week or so and sure enough, it was too bulky for me. The small outlay was worth it to test and prevented me from getting buyers remorse on a much bigger purchase.

·

Don‘t eBay while drunk. The items you were still contemplating arrive before you finished considering the pros and cons

I would agree that most watch purchases are impulse buys. Owning watches is hard to rationalize beyond a couple to quartz watches to match your outfits, specialty watches for certain activities, fitness trackers, or anything you might be able to resell at a higher price.

The rest is rather based on emotion, and I have to admit that I am happier with impulse buys over watches that were offered at a great price and looked right because of their specs.

Yes, but I buy sneakers I don't need.
