Do you consider resale value when purchasing a watch? Why?

Never!

I don't. But Vostok isn't great on the aftermarket.

I did when I got the Cartier Tank Solarbeat. I was a little hesitant that it wouldn't fit my style, but I knew they'd discontinued it so I'd be safe to sell if I didn't wear it.

I wear it, so I'm not going to sell, but it did give me peace of mind knowing I had a safety net

Resale? No. Value retention? Yes. It was not until this year I ever bothered trading in or selling watches, so resale means very little. However, would I dare buy an Omega, IWC, Longines, etc at full price simple because I like them? Firm no, even hell no. Their value retention is not great, so I am going to look to purchase them at price reflective of the actual market. No one likes to get home to see the nice product they just bought (regardless of what it is) only to find out they could have bought it for 40% cheaper if they bothered to research it in advance. There is buying something you like and there is buying something you like in an educated manner.

I totally agree with your statement. I have made a few boutique purchases, though, due to the better warranty I do find value in the five year warranty tudorr offer versus the secondary market. I am yet to sell a Watch however!

Buy grey vs. secondary if you want the warranty. For most brands including Tudor the warranty follows the watch not the dealer.

Because I never get into the rare air of the big brand luxury watches & I buy to keep, I've never considered resale value.

·

Not at all. Haven’t sold a watch in my life because of its sentimental value. I probably never will. Because of this I couldn’t care less about resale value.

·

Only as an argument to my mother 😂

·

Yes. If a watch is significantly less expensive pre-owned, then I will usually let someone else take the hit and buy it preowned from them.

·

No.

·

No point. The vast majority of watches drastically drop in value the second you check out.

·

Definitely have to consider value with insurance

·

Not really, but you can get quite a shock when you decide to move something on!

·

No

·

Nope.

·

Meh at this point no I don't plan on amassing a huge collection and have been doing better with impulse buys so I plan on keeping what I have...for now anyways 😅

·

I have never thought about the resale value of any watch that I have owned but I was chatting with the young man whose family owns the 2 boutiques where I buy a lot of my watches about some of the watches that I no longer wear purchased more than 30 years ago, I was surprised at the value of a a few complicated movement moonphases sitting in my bank box. So it is relevant but continues to not a factor when I buy a new watch.

·

Nope.

·

So far no. If I buying something that cost thousands of dollars in the future probably will be a factor then.

·

Never lol. But hey if that's why you buy watches that's your decision. Not too smart in my book.

·

Never have and never will! I buy what I like, and do so knowing that the cost is in the enjoyment I will get!

·

It’s not a determining factor, but I do consider it. I’m still relatively early in my collecting journey, and I don’t want to end up with a million watches.

I’m a still in the process of figuring out what a good number would be, but I’m trying not to go too crazy in the meantime. So knowing I won’t take a huge loss on a watch, in the event I decide to let it go, is relevant, but not a major deciding factor.

If I’m that worried about what happens if I don’t like/keep the watch, then I probably don’t really want it anyway.

·

No. I buy a watch because I like it and want to wear it. If you want it, come pry it from my cold dead fingers.

·

Most of mine were junk when I got them, so the simple fact that they run now has increased their resale value 😂 Actually, I usually only work on the pieces I want to keep or give away as gifts, so resale value isn't an issue😊

·

No, I have never sold one. Lol 😂🤣
