Traveling- take quality or a beater?

In spring 2024 I will be traveling in Europe. The question I have is, should I bring one of my better watches or a beater? I was even considering buying a beater just for the trip.

By the way, I will be looking for a watch while I am there.

When I travel, I bring a daily and a dress watch, for the days I need to be formal. All depends what you’re comfortable with.

If the Internet is to be believed, Europe is a savage and lethal wasteland, whose natives will rob you and stab you as soon as look at you.

Make sure you have a heavily-armed local guide who can barter with the indigenous peoples and buy you safe passage.

Don't, whatever you do, wear anything that costs more than a dollar, else you'll be stripped bare like you've been attacked by piranhas.

Probably.

·

Take both. Beater & a posh watch, tho depends on what you're planning on purchasing. 👍🏻

·

Depends on what you do on the trip, if I were you I’d take both kinds of watches.

·

Take what you love. Create some memories. Pay attention to your surroundings, if it feels sketch, run away. No watch is worth your life. Don't go alone.

Right now I will be looking for a Longines Spirit or Longines Master Moonphase

·

I try to take a beater watch as well as something a little nicer. A Casio AE-1200 and the Lorier Hyperion for instance. One for casual exploring and one in the event we do a nice dinner or something.

·

I normally bring three watches. My G-Shock, a Seiko quartz dress watch, and one of my mods. Nothing expensive or fancy, as I'm usually focused on my travel, and not on my watches.

·

I would take a quality GADA, something with a bracelet, that can fit in any situation: going around the city, in a nice dinner, or just traveling.

It should not be too flashy, expensive, or heavy as I would be wearing it all day.

Maybe something in titanium, sapphire crystal, 100m WR, radio-controlled, scratch resistant, world time, solar...

😀

Or maybe go automatic and stainless steel...

Bring one, buy another during your trip 😜

·

Quality beater... Travel light it's just better.

Took my islander to Germany in September and am sporting my Seiko king turtle now in France/Geneva.

Last year I did the Casio's. The plastic fantastic gets old after a few days. At least for me. Was yearning for something more on the wrist.

Those may be the citizens I've been looking for.

Got the nighthawk years ago and am very impressed with what I got. Eco drive, build quality, comfort..

It's just a bit too much though.

If I could get that auto with Eco drive.. I'd have it

Europe, huh? Wait, I'll google it... Oh, cool, it seems the indigenous people there learned about watchmaking 😀. So, might it be possible to go there without a watch and take one home? 🤔

In some regions of Southern Europe, I would personally opt for a Casio Royale or another inexpensive watch that educated greedy eyes can easily read as below €100. Everywhere else, wear what you want.

·

Depends on what you are doing. I’d take a beater if you are doing anything other than sightseeing.

·

Also depends ofc on your definition of ‘better watch’…if that means a Lange 1 or FP Journe chrono, I would not bring it while traveling. If it’s a 1 or 2k Longines, Citizen etc. you’ll be fine almost everywhere. Or bring something in between: nice watch, but if it gets a dent (or worse) not a major blow. I use my Squale for that for instance.

Location, location, location...

·

I Travel with my gshock then get a new watch at the destination country as a souvenir. Working for me so far. Only done it 3 times though. Have fun 🥳

·

Always take a beater. That can be anywhere from casio to a rolex though...

·

I usually take a microbrand that's suitable for the planned activities, is sporty but dresses up a bit, and won't break my heart if its lost or damaged. Or stolen. I traveled quite a bit last year and this worked well for me. On nicer trips with my wife I wore an Undone chrono and on a boys trip with my son I wore a Timex Ironman.

·

It depends where are you going... i am from Portugal... we have either good places where you can use a beater (trekking in madeira island for exemple 😅... my wife is from that island 😝😝😝) or a all day watch for your "tourist" days 😁.

·

Just listen out for the Italian lady shouting “Aaattencione!! Peekpocleettes!!”, and dont wear your Patek on the Tube.

I like to bring a nice restaurant watch, a good daily, and a beater gshock to set my expensive piles of shit by.

As a Brit (former European), which parts are you going too?

I mean if your in the UK, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark etc the. Wear what ever you want, as I'd say it's far safer than most of the USA.

If however your heading to eastern Europe (hungry, Belarus, Poland et on a stag do, just bring a something cheap.

Going to Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. I will be chaperoning 35 high school students on a tour. Hoping to watch shop in Lucerne.

Germany, Italy, Switzerland, bring whatever you want,

When I'm travelling anywhere I always take a nice watch and a beater, day time I wear the beater, in the evening I wear my nice watch when going out

Then you are absolutely fine, wear what you want. I dare say you'll see quite a few luxury watches on your travels there.

Hope you enjoy your time, very cultural countries steeped in history. Good luck with your shopping :)

·

That's why I have my Steeldive Willard, it looks and wears like a "good" watch, but if anything happens to it, I can get another one with a single click.

·

We have not planned any trips during recent times but these 3 would be good choices to wear daily, in fact they are watches my wife often take from the dining room table to wear when she is out shopping for groceries or running errands. The 48mm Breitling is large but she wears it over her jacket sleeve.
