First Seiko

I’m new around here so I thought to start a discussion as to what was your first Seiko. Here is mine; bought in the Bahamas while on honeymoon in August 1984, Ref. 8123-8009. This is the first nice watch I owned.

What is your first Seiko and the story behind it?

My wife bought me this in about 2008. It runs just fine and triggered a trip down the rabbit hole which I have not recovered from. I will never get rid of this one.

The first watch I bought for myself in the late ‘70s while a student at Ryerson Polytechnical in Toronto. Manufactured in May 1977, it was sitting in the window of a little jewellery store on Yonge St.  (Toronto’s main street and also the longest street in the world.)  When I stopped to admire it, the old guy inside gestured through the window to come in and I bought it.  The accuracy was so impressive that I returned some time later to buy a different model Seiko for my brother for his birthday.  At some point I probably replaced the original bracelet due to wear.  Still keeping good time 45 years after it left the factory.

My mom gave me this in the 80's. It's my first seiko. It stopped about 18 years after purchase.

SARB033! It was addiction from then on, the SARB has a lot to answer for!

An SQ100. The lettering and the minute marks have somewhat faded since the late 80s, and it has been a daily beater for decades. Just wore it the other day.

SNK807 I got late last year because I wanted to try out a mechanical watch. Nothing but charm on this one!

You are correct sir or madam as the case maybe. Certainly is a shall we say significant watch that I’ll never part with. Thanks.

My Seiko 6923-7099. I received this as a gift for Christmas 1985. It has a faceted crystal and a banging bracelet! It's still very accurate (+ 5 sec/month), has one tiny scratch on the crystal, and the gold-tone is mostly intact. I adore this watch and wear it with pride. Your watch is similar to a version featured on A View to a Kill with Roger Moore.

For me, it was the venerable sarb033 - which also happens to have been my first mechanical watch.

I picked up an SKX009 and SKX013 because of all the “everyone should have an SKX” comments.  I was decidedly unimpressed with those models given the hype.  I’m unlikely to buy another Seiko due to that experience.

That is a shame. I have been a fan of Seiko for a long time but almost swore off the brand recently due to an unfortunate experience with a turtle. Seiko took care of me under warranty so my confidence was restored. So much so that I bought a Seiko Solar since. I would give the brand at least one more try, but that is just me.

My 1979 Seiko, model 7546-8519.  Numerals at every hour is fairly rare.

c1980 I had admired this at Macy's department store in Northern California and the woman in my life surprised me with it as a gift.

She is long gone but the Seiko remains, running perfectly after a recent service.

(The quarter and dime show the scale of the now small-ish 34mm case diameter).
