What determines your next watch Purchase??

This always intrigues me as we are all so very different and are in different stages in our watch collecting journey that I find it interesting the reasons my fellow crunchers purchase their new watch!

Does it come down to your beater watch is on its way out and needs replacing, or do you have a dress watch missing from your collection. Or is it just you love a particular brand and their new range is due out??

I’m sure if your anything like me you have a list of watches you would like to get next and it seems to grow with any video from Andrew Morgan on a watch you didn’t know about!

For me when it comes to watch collecting I like watches for different occasions but also I like very different looking watches. And a big part of that for me is the dial colour. If I can I like to have watches with different dial colours otherwise I feel a watch collection to look a bit samey. Not knocking it, just not for me.

I have a blue dial, black dial, amber dial and burnt orange dial, so for me I tend to look at watches at the moment with a white dial. In saying that there are watches on my hit list with black and blue dials too but I’m aiming for white at the moment.

I’m also looking for a beater and a good quartz but they are for another post.

So crunchers. What decisions do you base your next purchase off??

Lately concentrating on the theme of my collection… for example, Tudor BB58 mini collection case materials… so far I have the bronze, will be arriving soon the silver 925 and still contemplating on the stainless steel one…

Glib answer: The two pictures you posted; the B&M in blue if they make it.

Slightly more thoughtful answer: I’m not categorized at this point. It’s whatever I like. Needs acceptable WR though.

Well… look at my recent post if you want to see what I’m searching for XD

You posted your post as I was writing mine! In conclusion I’m searching for a timeless dress watch that I can have forever, manual wound and an open case back

·

Yeah water resistant for the most part needs 100m minimum for me!

Money

·

The pistachio-green is a true beauty 😍

·

Having money to burn. Things have been tight, so I have been avoiding looking at things to purchase lol.

·

Opportunity...my last few watches were ones that weren't being actively pursued but that I was excited about when they were presented to me by other collectors.

·

Something considerably different from what I already have, and has to be something that I like very much.

That's a reason why I doubt I'm going to buy anything this year.

·

Now that I have spent quite a chunk of $$$ on watches, I would like to be selective rather than a drunk shopper. Next would be based on really what I want in my collection. Probably a reverso from #jlc

Have you seen one in your hands ? I ask, because on some photos the green it's stronger on others much more subtle.

·

I'm all over the place. I tend to make one significant purchase per year and picked up a Zenith A384 a few months back so I'm probably done for 2024. What's next is a mess. I've got my eye on a small-ish GS dress watch that I love but is probably a bit much for day-to-day wear. I've also been eyeing a Black Bay 54 since I'm looking to get a quality diver as a 'holiday watch' and that one ticks pretty much all boxes (not a fan of their stepped faux-rivet bracelet though, so considering holding out until Tudor offer it on a jubilee or Forstner bands put out a BB54 equivalent option). Whatever handful of watches I'm looking at you can be pretty sure they are completely different so extremely hard to compare and contrast on a rational level. Most likely I will dither until one of my shortlist appears in a sale somewhere and I use that as an excuse to swoop since it would be stupid not to... 🙄

·

Quite often, price. Impulse buying can be hazardous to your wallet. I never kniow when the impulse will hit.

But longer range, availabileness. While I long after a GMT Master II I'm not holding my breath till I get one, if you know what I mean.

No, I haven't.

You are right, in various light conditions the color may seem different.

I’m in @FlatteryCamp ’s camp (see what I did there). Opportunity! I saw a video with Federico describing his way of buying watches. Basically he have a ”list” of watches on his radar. If an opportunity comes up that is the one he get, not chasing one particular from the list.. I can relate to that. I have a imaginary list of watches I would like to own. My last purchases has been due to opportunities. A unexpected discount, a pre loved dealer close by selling to a very decent price etc. Most important I had money available at the time.

lol! Money always comes in handy! Guys who announce money is no big deal usually have enough.

Usually I just buy watches because I like em, however I’m hunting my perfect red dial at the mo 👍🏻

·

I base purchase decisions on the gap e.g. 'what I feel is missing in my collection.' I've churned enough that this isn't necessarily a dial color checkbox anymore or a watch type (I hardly need dress watches; chronos are fun but not that functional for me; I only travel for holiday so second timezone tracking isn't critical; etc), but moreso kind of vibes/moods.

right now, a fun, changeup watch that can do well as a summer watch on bracelet or leather/nylon is up next for me.

Good luck with that!

Yeah I’m similar to that. I’m eying up a Tudor 1926 with the opal one dial as I think that’s a nice blend of dress up and summer sports. But I guess a bit like you when it comes to chronos I’m on the fence with. Most of them don’t do it for me and not really needed!

when I was getting into watches, I was enamored with a jlc master memovox (not exactly why that one specifically given that it's a relatively vanilla styling, but it felt like a great 'i made it' milestone type of watch at the time).

I was lucky to be more into the hobby by the time I had some money to throw around. bought a cocktail time -- no reason to spend so much on a dress watch that would get so infrequent wear.

the 1926 is really nice. well finished -- the pop of blue, the thin hands, the dial texture, and the arabics on even numbers give it just enough personality and versatility. it's a good next pick.

yeah, my issue with many chronos is that i'll never use the function for its intended purpose (timing things) except just for fun to see the gears move. in exchange you're often sacrificing a lot of wearability (13mm+) and durability (water res, etc) and taking in higher future servicing. maybe a speedy or a glassbox one day, or go full for-fun with a studio underd0g pepper0ni. but I'm also okay without one.

·

Yeah a dress watch is a nice to have but if your not in suits all week or have a casual style it can be a difficult thing to pair.

Yeah my list of watches i’d like only has 1 chrono on there, and that’s an old speedy from 2000 with broad arrow hands and a silver bezel because it just looks so f**king cool. Actually that and Nivada’s Chronomaster is nice! But yeah no real use for the movement really so not top of my list!

·

💰 the bank account 😁

·

im right there with ya. I think any omega I eventually get will have a broad arrow

No rhyme or reason to my madness.... I just wait till the watching collecting stars align. Which is when I get that itch and one just looks and feels right, its available and I have the funds just lying around and there is an major accomplishment or life event that justifies treating myself to it.

If it wasn't for all those things having to align, I have a very big room with lots of full watch boxes 🤣

·

I try to wait out desire and pursue great design and function. Ideally no more than 6 watches.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, the Citizen I'm after is a JDM model and the other brands on my shortlist are microbrands, so I'm out of luck trying to find them at department stores in my area. In fact, it's hard to even find a decent department store around here these days, thanks to Mr René Benko, a local "former billionaire".

ebay is a good Store to look for JDM watches. This one I bought it there
