Fifty Fathoms Swatch is Upon Us!

Heard there might be a new Swatch collab with BlancPain. This was recently shown in a German magazine. The crown on this is similar to the Moonswatch release but it’s a Fifty Fathoms crown and a blank spot for where BP logo would go. Also has 9.9.23. Next Saturday they’re dropping a water resistant Fifty Fathoms Swatch for the 70th anniversary of the legendary original dive watch. I could be wrong but there’s a few YouTube pages talking about this now too. Makes sense. Hopefully swatch group learned from their mistakes with Moonswatch release and have stores packed. If it looks cool enough and water resistant maybe I’ll throw on some depends and head down with a buddy to the nearest swatch store.

The hype will probably not be as ridiculous this time.

Omega is a big name that a lot of people are familiar with. Also the Moonwatch has this great background story that a lot of people can relate to.

But Who knows about Blanc Pain outside of the watch enthusiast community? And what story is there to tell? That it was maybe the first „real“ dive watch? How many care about that?

However, it could be interesting. Maybe a series of 5? One for each Ocean? With smaller seas as special editions?

I will laugh if they end up using a theme close to my 7 Seas Swatchmaster concept. 😂

If it's plastic, er... Bio-ceramic, excuuuse me... I'll pass on this one as well.

I just want a better watch for the money.

·

I am mostly interested in the potential naming convention. If we got the Moon+Swatch before, could it be:

  1. Swatchy Fathoms

  2. Fifty Swatchoms

  3. Sw-ifty Fathoms

  4. Fifty Sw-athoms

  5. My personal fave… Filthy Fathoms. I know it doesn’t include Swatch in it, but I love it for a watch concept. If they don’t do it, I will. 😂

·

I’m stoked. I look forward to the unveiling and I’m sure I’ll end up with one. There’s a swatch store close enough to me that I’ll be able to grab one if they don’t sell online. I hope it’s fairly water resistant and on a better strap than the MoonSwatch.

·

This is my bet for the possible branding. Using the traditional Blancpain typeface for the name and then simply converting the rear S to the Swatch logo.

Image

that said, MoonSwatch was easy to say and delineate/identify… so maybe another shot in the dark.

·

Is it just me thats over the whole swatch collaboration nonsense?

·

Interesting, I’ll be keeping my ear open for this one.

My guess is Dive Swatch

My guess is Dive Swatch

I didn’t even think about this… you’re probably right.

Guaranteed first complaint from the #influenza and talking heads:

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS ONLY 3/5atm! HOW DARE YOU HAVE A DIVER STYLE WATCH AND NOT HAVE 5x10^3578 m OF WR! SHAME ON YOU SWATCH GROUP. YOU HAVE DEVALUED BLANCPAIN, OH THE HUMANITY"

You heard it here first....🫣🤪🤔

So maybe this isn't such a poor collab. Nobody outside watch circles knows BP or would be interested in 50F, it's a lot of money for an average looking diver when you can get a perfectly usable and much prettier one for a couple of hundred £/$.

However it does have the history, and I'd assume there's going to be a shedload of marketing telling how it's the first diver. Suddenly 50F is cool with the kids just like the Omega Speedy, and it will lead to an uptick in sales and brand recognition.

And yes, they'll give it some WR. It doesn't need to be much, after all no serious diver uses a watch and non-divers aren't going to trouble it below 6ft anyway.

Only to the same extent that any collabs are, they're an exercise in marketing and sales. It happens with just about anything that can be packaged, marketed and sold. It's not specific to watches, and certainly isn't specific to Swatch. Look at the endless Hodinkee tie ins - they're far more fatuous than what Swatch is doing.

As some one much wiser said once, "It's all about the Benjamin's".

Point of a company, is to make money for owner/shareholder's etc.

My guess they might go for a Sistem auto, and throw some casual WR at it.

Swatch released a pretty killer little diver style watch awhile back. Came with preinstalled NATO adapters. Sea Tortoise I think?

·

Excited for this release! Can’t wait to see what the watch will look like!

Mate, that isn't a magazine....are you young?

Wait til you find out about The Economist Newspaper.

I bought into the #moonswatch hype. So many fun memories of owning various #swatch pieces as a kid, so much envy and inability to save up for a #speedmaster ... (Follow me and you'll see that #omega isn't really my bag anyway). But it was dumb luck that I walked into the Swatch store in Las Vegas and picked up Mission to the Moon - the only one I considered buying anyway. I've worn it a couple of times and will hold on to it I guess...

The potential for a #blancpain/#swatch #collaboration is interesting. Here, Swatch has the opportunity to address some of the issues they encountered with the #moonswatch while also speaking to a slightly more knowledgeable and enfranchised market - for all it's groundbreaking work and essentially inventing the modern #diver (don't debate me), #blancpain doesn't have the same mainstream awareness that Omega does (again, don't debate me). If it's comparable in price, and has some slightly better water resistance given its heritage, I'll jump on the "BlancSwain" #hypetrain,

🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃

but I'm unlikely to go all the way to Vegas for it (which is to say they had better get stock to #australia in a timely fashion!

I loved your renders of the Seamaster Swatch colab. I would be excited if they did something similar to yours.

Rumors all seem to be pointing to the Fifty Fathoms… and the internet is never ever wrong 😂 I am sure it won’t be much different from the MoonSwatch offerings though in terms of color options 👍

It's... Ok...

Oooo SystemFifty-One Fathoms genius 😂 though wish they spelled it all out in the cursive type

·

I can't believe how gullible everyone is... The picture is of water so it must be Fifty Fathoms-related, right? Classic misdirection. Swatch has long been interested in art so I confidently predict this will be a collaboration based on Blancpain's Métiers d'Art collection, quite possibly a Hokusai-themed piece celebrating The Great Wave (water theme) to bring Blancpain's superlative watchmaking skills to a mass audience. Why do I think this? Because both companies have such a watch already and this is a chance to bring to market a watch that finds the perfect mid-point expression between this:

And this:

Yes, I'm like a motherf*cking horological Sherlock Holmes up in here. You can all thank me for calling this on the nose next Saturday. <mike drop>

·

All I’m getting from this is that Swatch dropped the ball so hard on the moonswatch release for watch enthusiasts that they needed blancpain to come in to try and hype up our crowd for another shot. Let me guess this time it will be an online exclusive and limited quantity. Only 500 pieces, probably less. 😂

A lot of divers still wear dive watches as backups to their dive computers.

·

It will definitely be interesting, if I’m not mis aken the whole BioCeramic thing roots from BP, the pic is in the water so potentially a range with a better water resistance than the Moonswatches. The price point will be interesting though, as thr 50 Fathoms are nearly double the price of the Omega Moonwatches should we be looking at similarly price ratios?

Also how will the solve the flipper market it at all?

The a Moonswatches we’re fun to collect and I have all but the Neptune now.

Anyway we will find out in a few weeks time lots of questions and lots of more questions.

If they use the system 51 movement

Then my guess would be '51 fathoms'

·

Just hope it's not another Omega.

Blancpain would be good, hopefully they're too under the radar for the general public - they ruined the Moonswatch (flippers and shite shop only marketing).

A Swatch irony sistem 51 50 fathoms would be an absolute no brainer, but no doubt it'll be a cheaply made plastic quartz ....

Yeah, just to be clear I'm kidding. This'll be a straight-up cash grab, called the DiveSwatch, and boast maybe 10 bar resist. Good luck to both Swatch and Blancpain, hope it leads to some extra love for the OG who don't get the props of Omega.

·

51 Fathoms. Done ✅
