Media Influences On Watch Choice

Good evening Crunchers! This one is pretty one the nose, but do you have any media that has influenced your decision to buy a watch?

I've been a big Bond fan since the late 1990s, with the Brosnan-era Seamaster being my grail. Additionally, I grew up watching a lot of Magnum P.I. re-runs, so that Sea Quartz caught my eye too.

How about you? Have a new, media inspired watch on your radar? I know I've got a vintage Hamilton CLD on mine due to my love of Jaws.

Not really, but the fact that Bill Gates wore a Casio Duro got me looking at them and eventually buying one, followed by a couple more. But he was never a brand ambassador or anything like that- He actually bought the watch because it served his purpose and was never paid to wear it.

That's totally fair. I have noticed folks wearing watches that caught my eye in a similar manner.

I have purchased the Momentum Sea Quartz 30 as influenced by Magnum p.i. Also, I spotted an interesting Casio on the wrist of Bob Odenkirk in the last season of Better Call Saul. I did a little digging and found out it's a WV-59, so I found one on eBay and it's awesome.

No,but love colts

Second the Jaws thing...

At first I wanted an Alsta reissue, but now I'm looking for the Gen I Hooper from Resco, with the steel cuff bracelet. Resco stopped making the bracelet sadly.

I too also ordered a Sea Quartz as soon as Momentum sent out the pre order for the first run. Spent many evening watching the OG Magnum withy dad.

And I'll DEF pick up the UDT reissue when they release it.

In an odd way, my infamous #custodesspecial is media influenced as well. I'm a HUGE Warhammer40K fan, and if that watch isn't something you would find in universe, I don't know what is. (Machine Spirit included 😂, IFYKYK.)

It makes me nervous whenever I see it sitting on the table with the hammer pulled.

I still need to play Dorktide with my friends, and I've got Boltgun installed right now too. Unfortunately, I was a MTG guy, so I never really liked the 40K tabletop game.

Boltgun was the most fun I have had in a while.

Even for non-fans, it's an awesome throwback, with modern quality of life wanted in boomer shooters.

Really stoked for the next one or some DLC.

In the season six episodes where Saul is the Cinnabon manager, the watch can be seen pretty clearly in the scenes where he brings the security guards some rolls to their office.

My buddy wanted a Pepsi GMT since the day Magnum PI "Treading Water" episode aired in 1983...he was 14 years old. The story line was it was left to him by his father who died in the early days of the Korean War...and the watch was the focus of him being determined to survive while adrift at sea, having to tread water for 24 hours while a shark circled him. Peak 80's TV.

My buddy bought one while deployed in Germany mid-90s. Wears it every day since. He even cracked its crystal on Sidney Poitier's bidet. (Him and his boys rented Poitier's hunting lodge for a weekend for some bachelors party thing- so not that glamorous, but still a great quip.)

Col. Cooper was once asked when carrying cocked and locked, "Isn't that dangerous!?"

He got that deadly serious Cooper look on his face and replied, flatly, "Yes. Yes it is."

🤣😎👍

I've been meaning to take some classes over at Gunsite. My website/my editor and I have a good relationship with them. Freddie Blish assisted with an article that I wrote last year, which was really cool. Just a matter of finding the time to make the journey to the promised land!

I love 4 of his films quite a lot, but then he's got 3 that I don't like nearly as much.

That's fair. They all seem to deteriorate in the role! But to me, he will always epitomize the cool deadliness of the character. ESPECIALLY in his first two films.

He's certainly very lethal in the first two films, before becoming a little more camp in the ones to follow. I have a lot of trouble enjoying YOLT, and with DAF, it's like a misplaced comedy film. NSNA is paramount to pulling my fingernails with pliers though.

Here’s the ones I have/had with some TV connection. In all cases, I liked the watch and the TV connection was an interesting bit of trivia.

Agreed on both! I watched a lot of TG when I was younger, and now I'm realizing how much that show influenced me. Most of it was in humor and cars, but the watches are hitting me now. Clarkson's 45mm Planet Ocean is a good looking watch on him, and now I want a PO too, hahaha.

Also agreed on the Bond influence. I think that Bond and Star Trek both influenced a lot of stuff over the years, with Bond certainly making dive watches seem like they can fit into a more dressy setting. For me, the Bond watches that I really want at this point in my life are semi-strange. I want that 42mm PO from Quantum, and the Tag Heuer from Living Daylights. I love the look of the classic Rolexes and Seikos, but the aforementioned watches are what have really caught my eye.

Nineties Seamaster 300 and the PO both double up as Clarkson watches 😆 (May has an orange PO… )

I do love that EB...but I compete with a Wilson that is really its equal. Love 'em both.

And that Steinhart? OMG I had an original Explorer II 1655 back in the day. This OLKO Special Edition Steinhart gives me the same look in a vastly superior watch. It is my favorite of all the watches I own.

·

My dad was a huge Tom Selleck fan. Loved Magnum PI and Quigley Down Under. If I had loved watches back in the 80s, I would have loved to get my father the Chronosport, which is the basis of the Sea Quartz reissue. I jumped at the chance to get it. Since I could never find my dad's watch, to me, it's the next best thing. I can't hear the opening theme to Magnum PI without thinking of my dad.

This is my Bond collection. 😜 From Dr. No, when Fleming took away his .25 Beretta and gave him the S&W Centennial Airweight and the Walther PPK.

Nice blued Series 70, what a 1911
