Unloved...

No one was bidding on this cool 1979 Timex day/date automatic and it was ending in minutes, so I stuck around for "swoopers."

Less than a minute left and still no love. I had to step in and save it.

It arrived yesterday, I set all the features and let it run overnight. Everything worked and it kept great time!

That crystal though...I knew it would be tough, but at least there weren't any cracks. Polywatch with my battery-operated Dremel only got me so far so I had to break out the Zam polish (green) and my plug-in Dremel to smooth out those deep scratches, then finished with the Polywatch.

It has that cool "perspective" date window that someone else here at WC pointed out a few weeks ago on their watch. I noticed this one had it too. It's not a miss-cut, the numbers are shaped that way too, if you look closely.

UPDATE: @michaelrbernstein is the one who pointed out the skewed date window that I thought was so cool. Thanks, Michael!

I haven't decided if I'm going to polish the case (and subsequently remove the gold-tone finish) or leave it.

All for the cost of two Starbucks coffees. What a great daily watch!

Cheers!

Thanks! It took a while until I got serious with the Zam.

Whoa! I wouldn't have thought there was any hope for that crystal at first glance! Maybe this will help teach me to be a little less defeatist. Nice work, man!

·

Right place right time Eric, cheers for the tip about scratches.

You've seen some nasty headlights that have been restored, haven't you? Same restoration principle, different types of "plastic." 👍 A polished crystal is a joy to behold.

What a beauty👍 Good job on the chrystal.

That Zam is a metal polish, so tread carefully using it. Pay attention to the heat that is generated - you can melt the crystal and ruin it if you're too aggressive.

Thank you, Per!

I love to polish things and make them shiny (or in this case, clear). But it's always been a thing with me. I had a 6" Colt Anaconda revolver with the factory brushed stainless steel finish and over the course of two weeks, polished it to a bright finish, like nickel. Boy that was satisfying.

Amazing well done 👏

It's a simple watch, nothing fancy, and was being overlooked. Now it has new life! ❤
